Unreal Linux - game crash after start.

Hi.

I've installed Unreal on my Fedora 12. Game crash after start.

Code: Select all

./Unreal: line 25: 7089 Naruszenie ochrony pami[ch281]ci (core dumped) ./UnrealLinux.bin "$@"

It's in my language, but Google Translate translate it to:
Violation of the memory protection
Unreal Tournament 99 Linux works - maybe little to fast, but...it works. Unreal with 227f not. Funny...i must play Unreal under Wine when there is native version...

It works in Linux for me, weird...

I have another problem though lol, but with all programs/games that use some rendering more complex than regular 2D stuff; it doesn't refresh stuff as title bar and if I drag the window around, it leaves a trail on the desktop and all other windows... Weird. Must be my graphics card...

Yes...i've readed link posted by you...but where is something about Violation of the memory protection :-[
[§[ch340]] [ch356]h[ch283]x[ch272]â[ch341]k[ch347]î[ch273][ch283][ch341] - i think it's problem with drivers. On Windows i have this same problem few years ago. You using proprietary or open drivers? If open drivers on ATi cars - it's nothing new :-) I saw this same problem in Windows 7 on Youtube. It's cross-platform problem - not only on Linux.

Trydi, I guess that your "Violation of the memory protection" simply means "General Protection Fault" AKA Segmentation fault.

Darksider, you've got a huge BSP hole on your desktop then ;D

Darksider, you've got a huge BSP hole on your desktop then ;D
LOL yeah it looks exactly like that! ;D
I'm using open source drivers, I have an Intel 945GME onboard chip, and Intel chips are known to cause weird sh[ch305]t lol. I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 which is probably the most affected by that, and I tried upgrading to 9.10 but on 9.10, I can't use dual screens (both screens go black if I use them both) and I can't access my WLAN. Also I tried to put driver from 8.10 but I failed to remove the current one and install that one.

I'll try to find a proprietary driver, maybe it works better with it... Too bad that the open source driver doesn't work very good...

EDIT: Fuck proprietary shit, I'm gonna dick with the settings. lol

Aha, mark it as a duplicate of this bug then:
http://www.oldunreal.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/ ... 467056/0#2

Darksider, hmm, I used Intel drivers on Ubuntu Jaunty and it worked fine minus the terrible performance in 3D games.

I've downloaded and installed 227e patch and game now run. I had only two problems with 227e:

First:

Popular:

Code: Select all

Error: Caught a C++ exception in main()!

Developer Backtrace:
...
Signal: SIGSEGV [segmentation fault]
Aborting.
Second:

Code: Select all

Violation of the memory protection
Third times - game will run.

I always said that 227e is better for playing ;D Joke... ;)

GreatEmerald, I installed some other driver now, to be honest I myself don't know what did I install...

But now lol it's like Karmic:
Pros: No more BSP hole on my desktop.
Cons: Can't use dual screens, both screens just go black. When I booted it like that I had to locate the shutdown button without looking for it hahahahaha! Rebooted with second monitor off, now it works. Also works if I disable laptop's screen and enable the other screen, which will I do because the other screen is bigger.

As typing this, my whole screen flashed orange for maybe 1/500th of a second... :-? Or it was just my imagination...

I thingied with xorg.conf, sources.list and did a total system upgrade (left over with 700 MB now, last time it left me with only 250 :)). New kernel, yeah baby!

TL;DR: Everything good has a bad side, and everything bad has a good side...

EDIT: Kill me if I know why, but when I switch to the second screen, the cursor turns into a black square with little holes... no homo

EDIT: I LOVE Firefox for saving what I entered into the reply form cause I had to reboot after dicking with the other screen, apparently it doesn't like it.

EDIT: My laptop is going crazy! Just got a GREEN SCREEN OF DEATH!!! :D
Luckily, I was able to locate the shutdown button once more, so as soon as I got my phone to take a picture, it rebooted. Before rebooting, it flashed ACPI information like MAD! That's it, no more dicking with dual screens...

EDIT: Got a BLACK screen of death now... Shutted down fine though... Gonna revert to the old drivers at last... If I figure out how to do so... lol

EDIT: I...think I reverted... Nope. Blender still works as it should. I should except a black screen of death soon...

EDIT: Screw it, I'm just gonna reformat my flash drive. lol

sorry for off-toping, but i think Ubuntu - especially Karmic - are not good. There are better distros like little bleeding-edge Fedora or OpenSUSE from Novell. There are only two good Ubuntu version - 8.04 LTS and 8.10. If you looking for stability and effective work - try something else - not Ubuntu :) But Ubuntu is easy distro for Windows-User. Other distros are not Ubuntu, so there are not for Linux newbies. So if you are more like newbie not geek - keep with Ubuntu ;)

well, I personally made good experiences with SuSE, even for newbies. It's a bit overloaded and maybe no super performance system, but quite stable, easy to maintain and even more easy to install stuff via 1-click install in the SuSE software repository or Packman.

Yeap, my primary choice is OpenSUSE as well *hint*sig*hint*. RPM is awesome, YaST is also extremely useful. And that's mostly what I get when I do distribution chooser tests :)

Really? I didn't think that's the case lol.

Yeah some other people suggested me to get Fedora, too. Maybe I really should. lol

I'm not VERY familiar with Linux, but enough to work without a GUI. lol

Violation of the memory protection
Hmm, I've never got such error.
Does Unreal work in other distros on your PC?
Post full Unreal output with -log option.

BTW, to see english messages use LANG=C in front of command
e. g. "$ LANG=C ./UnrealLinux.bin"
PS I can read and understand two words in your localized message :p

I have this problem only on 227f - on 227e Unreal is playable. Long time ago, when I used Ubuntu 8.04 on proprietary ATi drives, I had SegFault from time to time (227e was better to run game on Ubuntu too). I can play Unreal on Fedora 12, but with 227e patch applied. On 227e i have SegFault like on 227f, but without memory violation error. But on 227e game finally run.

No, that is in English. the "Naruszenie ochrony pami[ch281]ci" line comes from the operating system, not Unreal. And it means Segmentation Fault.

First, you don't have UWindowFonts package.
Second, looks like bug, may be Smirftsch can say something about it.
Also, it would be good to make strace log.

Like I've said, it's a duplicate bug:
http://www.oldunreal.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/ ... 467056/0#2

You have to remove master.oldunreal.com from your server list.

After removed master.oldunreal.com I've had black screen only - why? It's only server adress...

But after reboot, game will run. Deleted oldunreal server address have something to do with this?

obviously it segfaults when no response from master server since down atm probably. Need to debug yet...
