How to download Unreal 1 (1998) on a Vista PC?

So, a few days back I went to my local Half Price Books to browse the old PC games they have. Long story short, I bought a brand new copy of Unreal 1 off them for about 5 bucks. (It was just the CD case in what I'm assuming was the original plastic wrap, no box came with it).

Of course, I popped the game disk into my PC (which was made late 2006 if that helps any) and basically got nothing. It seems to just continually try to read the data on the disk, after a while however, It'll just give up and stop. I was wondering if anyone had some sort of driver or trick to getting Unreal 1 to download onto their Vista OS Computer? Any info for the new guy would be greatly appreciated.

he could do that if he can right click/open it, if not this is impossible.
well try right click/open and then install.exe, if that doesn't work
try what casey sayd.

If the disk is damaged, try carefully peeling off the edge layer, popping it in and immediately making an ISO image of it if it works.

And for the record, i use Vista(and hate it), but Unreal will install just fine on it. So its not a Vista problem.

Aside whats written above you may also want to check if the CD player itself is ok.

Thanks for the help guys. However, it would seem either my CD or my disk reader is completely broken as right clicking and opening the CD shows no files on my computer. I'll be sure to go back to the HPB and return my disk for another (hopefully working) disk.

I would say try with another CD if the CD player works. If the player works try the store for a new copy. If they dont have another copy than keep the one you have, because than you have a licence to own a copy of Unreal and that makes it possible to legally sent you the files.

But if you turn it in, i cant, because you need to own a copy(read licence), broken or not.

Ok i am stepping in here as admin.

For the record, if you buy a legal copy of Unreal, you buy a licence for life. If the CD breaks or get lost you still own the licence. If you sell your copy you transfer your licence to the buyer which means you loose your licence.

As long as you have a licence, than its legal to optain the files from any source you want, since you own that licence.

I advised him to check his CD player to make sure its functional, if it is, he should try swap the broken CD at the store. If the store doesnt have another copy, he still should keep the broken CD so he still owns a licence. That in turn makes it possible to sent him the files, and only than!!!

So please stop pushing towards illegal downloads, because its illigal and can get this site into problems, not to mention the fact we have the sourcecodes and dont need to have this stuff posted on the forums.

PEOPLE, DONT OFFER ILLEGAL COPIES !!

- Let him first check the CD player.
- Let him check if he can swap his CD at the store.
- If he keeps the CD regardless, and he keeps his licence than he will get the missing files, and no second before.

And there is no need for offering stuff through peer to peer, Rapidshare, torrent or what more.

Aside story above, if needed, he also can purchase Unreal from this link:

Hoots Loot

And as very, very, very, very, very, very last resort, i own more than 40 licences of which i could turn over oné copy(as in downloadable data) to him, if everything fails.

If your CD doesn't work then either the driver, the drive itself, or the connection to the drive is failing.. If you can't fix it on your computer, then you're going to have to install the game on a computer that functions properly, then transfer the files to your regular computer though either file sharing or external device, that's always worked for me in the long run..

Technically, if he holds a valid copy of unreal in his hand he can download a copy, but only if he can prove he really has it. So the US law loopholes state lol

iirc, for steam and support for DICE games you can show them a picture of you holding your CD or CD-key for an appropriate game and they will credit an account for downloading, or other issues.

Here's a question (for anyone): if you legally own a license to the game, then is it illegal to obtain a copy from someone who does not have a license themselves (i.e. through torrenting)?

No thats legal, the only thing that counts is that you own a licence, where the copy comes from does not matter at all. You are entitled to own a copy if you have a licence. Source is of no consequence, since you own a licence. At the moment you recieve the "illegal" copy it becomes legal.

Then, not to argue about it or anything, but what is the problem with him using a torrent then? I don't get what the big deal is. It's not illegal then if he owns a license.

I mean there are downsides to using a torrent vs. having someone send it to you (you don't know who you're getting it from, you don't know if it's complete, etc) but in terms of legality there is no issue then.

There is a legal issues indeed. Because, torrents are made to send and recieve data. So basicly, with torrents you are sharing parts of your unreal to millions of people, who dont own the license, and that is Ilegal.
If dont want to get in trouble, try to contact the retailer, and ask for replacement, i hope you saved your receipt :)

Right, because as you're downloading you're also uploading, which is illegal distribution. Got it.

Now, what is the issue with RapidShare then?

well, I made my way way to HPB today. Unfortunately, It would seem that they had no new copys (Only other copy they had was scratched to hell and I highly doubt it would have worked...) So, I was determined to get the copy I had working and in the process, I believe to have found my problem.

In the rush to buy and get my copy home, I didn't notice the logo on the back of the case that says 'Macsoft' on it. I assume that this means my copy was made for the Macintosh and can't read the files on my Windows computer. I also can assume that this doesn't entitle me to legally getting a Windows version from anyone here. If anyone can say otherwise however, I would be glad to provide pictures of my copy in order to prove I still actually have it. Otherwise, this thread can be closed by a moderator.

Yeah the Macsoft logo means that its a MAC version, but it still means that you own a licence for Unreal, and i doubt that the platform matters.

Well, we tend to keep things open :)

And to make sure you enjoy Unreal even more, download these High Resolution textures(all 4 files):

It was a matter of making sure that everything was legal, and that there was a legitimate licence. Not just a "PM me" response.

We tend to be abit paranoid about such thing here, and for good reason. No need to take things personally. It wasn't meant that way.

Sorry.

I second that :)

And that too :)

But yeah, it sums it up, you have to make sure someone has a licence, and he did sent me fullproof photos, he does have one. And such a proof can be an actual unique photo from the disk(s) and/or a receipt that tells its a receipt for a copy of Unreal.

As for Torrents and Rapidshare, offering downloads through that media there is always that risk that others may download the files as well. And while its perfectly ok to give a link to those, its impossible to proove that others that dont have a licence go use that link as well. And since you cannot proof it, its a breach of law, cause you HAVE to proof that. I direct link to oné person solves that problem.

And dont get us wrong, everyone only wanted to help him out, so for that part everybodies input is highly appreciated! But i had to cut short the general talk about downloads, because of most countries nowadays laws, that alone is aplicable for getting a lawsuit.

And it can come from either way, the government where the server is located, the site host breaking your contract for having links to illigal warez, or Epic, or Legend or Midway, or etc. etc. Not to mention, this sites owner has the sourcecodes......

For Unreal Texture i had to sign a contract that all files, and that includes all zipfiles that contain maps, textures, sounds, etc are not warez. And yeah, i actually had to unpack 120000 zipfiles to submit the readme's (96 Mb) to my host............. ::) I hope they had happy reading lmao  8-)

But as said, we all apreciate all your guys input :) , but it can be very harmfull to even allow such talk :-/ . And of course we all would like to see a link where we simply could people sent to go download Unreal. If that was possible, rest asured, this site and Unreal Texture or for that matter any other Unreal site would have it. But thats unfortunatelly not how it is. :'( .....................
