Unreal needs a...

Deathmatch server with the normal map rotation.
Now before anyone tells me to run one myself it is just something that I cannot do so please hear me out!

I love Deck16(TNN) as much as the next fragger but after about 2-3 runs through it, everyone gets bored and quits out of the game.

It just amazes me that their isn't one server in the list, even empty, that has the good old maps like Curse/Tundra/Radikus/Morbias/Healpod/Deathfan/Ariza because if their was i'd sit in it endlessly waiting for more people to join.   8-)

Now allow me to make a comparison to another game I started playing around the same time I began playing Unreal.
It is called Quake 2 which is also an old game i'm sure everyones heard of.
Much like Unreal it has it's "Deck 16" in the form of a map called "The Edge" or q2dm1.
Also much like Deck16 this map is where 99.9% of 1v1/Team matches are decided on a regular basis.

The difference being that the actual normal FFA/DM servers still run the regular rotation because if they didn't, much like Unreal, after about 2-3 runs through the same map over and over again the server would empty out and it'd be just as dead.

Now I will say their is not alot of servers left for said game but the couple that are left ALWAYS have at least 5 people in them regardless of day or night.

I know this forum is more co-op oriented but I figured their had to be someone else out there who's at least looked at the server list once in the past couple years and thought the same thing about the no dm server with the regular map list thing!
I'm not saying having a server like this would cause a massive ressurgence of activity in this game type or anything.Moreso that it stuns me not one is left out there.

Thanks/Sorry to any and all who made it through this rambling rant but it's something i've been thinking of for a long time.

P.S. As many fond memories as I have of games played on Deck16 more times them I am able to count, I did get to speak with it's creator at one time(Myscha the Sled Dog) and he said he personally hates it(lol).Maybe this last little tidbit will have made my post worth reading. :P

I'll turn my 227g test server into a DM server I suppose....always wanted to run one anyway. You just won't be able to join with 227f though :P

I would say server with official maps only would be good, that means even the bonuspack, unreal special edition maps, rtnp maps maybe, gw press addon maps, unreal creative (some of these maps are ugly but hall1a plays well) and unreal psx, if the deathmatch maps got released for free.

Whats the eta on the rest of those PSX maps Leo? I look forward to playing them.

I liked DM-Villa and DM-Morbfanza the best. I can't remember which version of Unreal those maps came with...I think I remember playing Morbfanza on the 97/98 beta.

There is DMVilla2 in the GW press addon maps, a bigger version of Villa and much nicer, well the original works only on release version, so you should look for my fixed map version called DMvilla2_224 or dmvilla2F, which was added even to that division pack of delacroix, you can find it on filefront.

As for the PSX maps, I finally got rid of the bug which disallowed me emailing the lead level designer (his provider blocking me), but I got permission to release his levels anyway.

Sorry for the late post on this topic, but I agree and converted one of the {hLk} servers from a unused UT3 to a U1 Original Maps Server. You should see it in the DM list. :-)

Sorry for the late post on this topic, but I agree and converted one of the {hLk} servers from a unused UT3 to a U1 Original Maps Server.  You should see it in the DM list.  :-)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you try this once years ago also? lol

I can hardly see it bring any interest for an outsider person into it (that means a player who haven't played Unreal in a while/or ever before).

So what Unreal needs is a DM server where no "godlike" players are allowed (or at least a hell of a good handicap control).

I'll be surprised if these "godlike" players are using cheats and even the detectors fail at figuring it out.

Deathmatch is retarded... I hate free for alls, and I also hate teamgames since nobody works together.

Pretty much true, although I don't agree about DM/TDM itself being garbage. The problem (for years really) has been people whoring the same map *cough* Deck16 *cough* for so long that playing it becomes a mechanical process to them. Most veterans were completely unwilling to help new players either, and instead would insult them, leave, or just dominate them without ever dying. There's simply no appeal for someone that hasn't been playing for years.

I have 2 problems with coop.
1. almost all populated servers left are completely "overmodded" in my eyes. There are plenty of nice things and some servers are amazingly set up with tons of work and a lot of love for the details, but it's not the coop anymore it used to be
2. It's often set up way to easy. Just run and slaughter everything down. That's why it was so important for me to introduce more difficulty levels in 227. It keeps the game and makes it more interesting again.
But then those servers are hardly visited....

My server isn't so much as "co-op" as it is "sandbox", but hardly anyone comes because of my package file sizes.. Well, I don't *really* care if I have huge file sizes.. if they don't want to join then they shouldn't really connect.

Hehe, lol. I don't fall asleep in DM, i like DM a bit, but then in coop servers since i dont want to search for all weapons every time i died, other then that, i dont know i just like Coop more then DM, dunno why actually.. And yea, Coop is pretty much dead, a couple of years ago there were way more servers and players around. Nowadays i only play on my test servers for testing, other then dont i dont play that much anymore as  i used to.

Sill loving DM, though I truly enjoy TDM but no one plays that anymore really. Used to love working as a team with some like-minded peeps and jump on Teamspeak with your team. We used to pick a room to hold, or call to each other for assistance, etc.. DM is fun, just more of a solo thing and is about all that anyone seems to do now. TDM is where I got my start so I guess that's why I like it the best. But back to topic, which was by Slax to request a server with original maps. That's online, so play and enjoy. If DM isnt your thing, no worries there's other server types to go play on.

I actually have gotten hooked on another little game called Atlantica but i've always got time for unreal so i'll be sure to frequent the server even if it's just me for long amounts of time.  ;D

I actually ran a server for a night and it became full(8 ppl) for a long time and all the classic maps were played.I forgot how fun and spammy Morbias was.
The main problem I had was my connection is not good enough to really run a server and have ppl get good ping sadly.

Thanks to DarkWing also, even with his horrible ping he stayed on the server with just me and him for about an hour before people started flooding in and helped make it happen.
For that night, Unreal was alive again.  ;)

And I agree, it can't be fun for newer / rusty players to come into a server and get fragged in seconds.. One of the reasons we run the {hLk} Newbies Welcome server, to play there on a more relaxed level and chat it up with peeps as they come in. Regardless of server though unless we're in a hardcore match or something then some of us need to take it down a notch. Point well taken, and thanks for bringing it up!
