Website for old Unreal beta stuff?

Post by Darkman 4 »

It seems like you guys have found a lot of info regarding the old Unreal betas and unused content (such as the old Automag model). However, it seems to be scattered here and there throughout the forums, which makes finding the info very difficult.

To get to the point; have you guys ever considered making some sort of website that documents all of these findings? It doesn't have to be a regular site; a wiki would be fine as well. I know you guys already have a wiki, but it seems to be dumping ground for info related to 227. The Liandri Archives could work as well in case you guys don't want to use your own wiki or set up another.

The website would also be useful for documenting things such as the 1995 tech demo, which doesn't run in modern operating systems, and for the betas that will eventually be released.

I'd hate for all this cool info everyone has found to go to waste. :(

Can only agree here and the wiki is open for everything.
The reason why mostly 227 content is there, is because we add a lot of stuff there during development already and of course because the new stuff needs to be documented.
Older and "known" content can be often found somewhere else already and people are somewhat lazy if it comes to work it up, especially if it can be found on some other place (sorry people :P).

Anyone can add things into the wiki, so I hope someone does the work, because at the moment I'm still very busy with 227 stuff...

So, feel free to add it ;)

Ah, I understand.

I think a good start would be porting the unrealsp.org writeups of the beta levels to the wiki. However, I think it would be a good idea to ask for permission before doing that.

Thanks!

In the readme, you state that some of the shots use the exact same HUD design and that the numbers on the HUD are exactly the same. This is likely because the shot is a mockup deigned for either promotional reasons or because Epic wanted to see how a new HUD design would look before they implanted it into the game.

I just tried it and it runs for me. Vista users need to disable DEP before running the demo, as it shuts down the demo before you can start moving around in it.

Some interesting stuff in that archive, i've never seen some of those pics before, particularly some of those crypt themed levels. Makes me wonder why they cut so many of them out of the game all of a sudden, i LOVED the crypt theme.
The picture of the castle textured hallway is labeled "chizra", this means chizra looked quite different from its current incarnation hehe ;)

The music sample is pretty cool too, they shouldn't have cut that out of the game either, now to find it in .umx format :P

The shadows, even though they're not beta content, make me drool, doom 3 made stencil shadows mainstream in games, but to believe unreal could do it about five years earlier is amazing!
PS: on a funny side note, the unreal stencil shadows were glitchy in real-time, i recall someone getting them to work on his riva tnt1 (my tnt1 on the other hand REFUSED to install the patch) and the shadows couldn't handle casting over complex geometry, for example the hallways in gateway.unr with hundreds of nalis summoned would result in some crazy stuff ;D

you guys probably already have the shadow sources, but i just decided to dig them out of my old drive and upload them, for the sake of archiving.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=F02FEEPU
credits to hypernl for extracting them.

they require unreal patch 220, which you can get from www.hypernl.tk hyper's site.

The requirements are a TNT1 card, which are hard to get nowadays,
Even worse, the likelyness of it working on a TNT1 card is very low, i had a TNT1 card from '98 to '03 and the installer refused to recognize it, probably a vendor/driver conflict issue.

Nice one Turboman, I was looking for this for a while, I just remembered that you need a TNT1 when you mentioned it :(

yeah, the original installer checks for the presence of a tnt1 card and drivers, these files were extracted from the installer, thus bypassing that check.
But then apparently the d3ddrv renderer itself checks for a tnt1 card, in my case of a perfectly functional tnt1 it still refused me :(

if it's a simple true/false check it can likely be hexed or bypassed to not check for that.. considering that i'm sure that modern cards support the feature its looking for

Yeah I tried difficulty 6, it's much harder than 3. More than double, lol.
