RTNP turns 10!

Today Unreal: Return to Na Pali is celebrating its 10th birthday!
Happy birthday, RTNP! Despite some flaws, it's still a very nice addon for Unreal! And, in fact, the only retail expansion in the whole Unreal history to date!

How long has Firestorm been in development for now?

I am not really that fan of RtNP nowadays, anyway it could have been a lot better if they had more time to fix bugs or convert the beta maps better (David Kelvin was transferring them) and transfer the brushes right etc (the missing detail purpose non solids at foundry and nagomi and velora etc). Or even design the maps better, they have some serious flaws and even authors admitted it.
RtNP is very poor in level design compared to Wheel of Time, which Legend worked on full time (rtnp after all was done by mostly doom and quake, plus unreal "community" mappers and coders) before they were acquired by Infogrames. I recommend anyone checking the game out who likes Legend's stuff even a bit.
Also I plan to get someone to release the cancelled missionpack if it exists still, I still await a response of Eric Reuter who worked on it (he did not have the stuff anymore, only that one unreal beta from 98), if he knows what people I can contact about it.
Without the original expansion I feel the unreal world is still incomplete, even if the alphas or betas get released.
Oh and I should not forget even Unreal Warfare, but that one would be kinda hard to obtain since it is all new game and not just new levels plus stuff. So that one is prolly not possible.

It is becoming Duke Nukem Forever of Unreal. ;D (jk)
Well, the first screenshots were in 2004 and official announcment, although he worked on it even before, anyway you can hear his response if he comes by to this thread. (of Turboman)
I even had the chance to betatest it in early 2006, until the project got on hold and later he updated it with those new trees and models and additional level parts and scripted sequences, judging by the trailer released in 2008, the 2006 trailer content was well known to me, except maybe for one level.
Oh and I should not forget that Mr.Prophet did some job on upgrading storyline as he mentioned on UnrealSP forums or something.
I even felt in betatesting that the storyline was quite non consistent, this will do it a better effect I guess.

I can't wait to play Firestorm, I'm probably going to be excited about it as I was when I first played Operation Na Pali and Nali Chronicles

I can answer those Firestorm questions.
By the time I beta tested it, Turboman had all the maps done. There were some bugs here and there, but it was pretty much a near functional pack that was like a super expanded RTNP. I've played it beginning to end, and even in this previous imperfect form it was better than RTNP.
In the months that I've been fixing the ingame story, adding subplots, and editing/fixing up the levels he's been sending me...the pack has had a lot of big changes to the overall storyline to make it less of a grand RTNP retread and more of a closing "trilogy" chapter for the Prisoner 849 story.
Turboman has also introduced updates for some monsters and introduced some new ones, as well as an extended ending since the original final two maps were weak in a lot of ways. There's a better sense of closure with what we're working on, for not only the pack but for the Prisoner 849 saga.
Basically, it's been playable with a beginning and end for over a year, at least. But it's not finished. You get it?
Oh any, happy anniversary to RTNP! Yeah, the last half kinda ignored the storyline and all. But I always considered this to be the closest real "sequel" to the original game, although I'm hardly a Unreal 2 detractor.

Though you have to admit they got one thing right: Music!

Oh, and cutscenes, they are rather amusing, even if there isn't much movement there...

I agree with the music. Well, mostly. Two of my five favorite Unreal songs were in RTNP. Then again, some of Unreal's worst are in RTNP as well.

I'm confused. Wasn't Unreal Warfare a codename for Unreal Engine 2 ?

No, it was a code name for UC1 I think.

It was not any codename, it was a standalone game....developed by Epic, while DE developed UC and UT2 and Legend develed U2.
The engine was named after Unreal Warfare firstm that is why you have heard engine: Unreal Warfare at some previews of games utilizing the engine.
You can tell it was not UC because UC is mentioned in that FAQ if you read it properly.
Unreal Warfare had even few leaked screenshots, these soldiers with these iconic helmets etc were seen on it...
And the video...damn I can't find it, it used to be in youtube....

Hmm... Another interesting thing is Unreal Console Technology:
http://forums.beyondunreal.com/showthread.php?t=180767
And why was is used as Unreal II splash screen...

That splash screen was used in that 2001 tech demo of Unreal 2, well not exactly same one, anyway where did you find this one then? It did not say console technology and yes it is from Unreal Warfare, even the tech demo had unreal warfare ini. Yeah for some reason ini from unreal warfare was also included.

I thought The Illhaven Saga was pretty good.
Where can I get Operation Na Pali and Nali Chronicles?

UNREAL WARFARE
1. Unreal warfare is planned soon after UT is released and the majority of its bonus packs are released.
2. Eventually, UT2003 and UT2004 are made. These contain what Epic had in mind as the basis for Unreal Warfare at the time, being early gameplay ideas.
3. Unreal Warfare is renamed Gears of War. After many years of planning, Epic utilizes their newest engine to build the game now known as Gears of War, which, gameplay wise contains most of what the ideas of the Unreal Warfare game was meant to possess. The Marcus Fenix and Locust ideas, along with the overall story, were what came along with the retitling of the game in general.

RtNP may be a flawed sequel but a sequel none the less. Too bad a true end to the series was never created but I suppose this will suffice... for now.
