OldUnreal (Engine)

Very very sad news and yet another nail in the coffin.
This came right out of the blue to me with no forewarning .
It is totally out of my hands now as the plug has been pulled on both the Unreal AND UT servers.
Its sad,but comforting to know that i managed to persuade those higher up to keep the Unreal servers as long as they did(about 9 years,as long as the UT ones) and i bear them no malice whatsoever in there decision.
For me and lots of Unreal players its the end of a very very long era.
I know a lot of you on this board didnt play on Jolt,but it was always reasuring to know that the servers where perrenially there.
Oh well,nobody can shut down the memories.

Jolt is a game server rental company.
After the demise of the Demon,Wireplay and later,the NGUK Unreal servers back in 2001,there was no commercial Unreal servers left in Europe.
Although much in decline from its heyday,Unreal still had a large hardcore of followers who didn`t want to play on poxy 128k upload servers
We collectively spammed the forums at Jolt to host our beloved Unreal.
After much coercing(spamming) ,the administrators(some reluctantly i may add) agreed to give us a box...free of charge.
It remained free for the duration.
However at the start of this year,some kind of takeover went through and the new guys in charge don`t have a clue and more importantly don`t have the same affection to the older games that the original Jolt crew had.
Unreal and UT are not money spinners :-/.
I have the utmost respect for the old Jolt guys and there perseverence of letting us have these servers for so long.
Right ...im off to spam the Multiplay.co.uk forums,see if we can get them to host ...they have cracking UT servers i must add ....

That's pretty lame. Wonder how many previous customers will shun them now

There are a helluva lot of Multiplay.co.uk servers on UT, surely with so many servers, they must love the Old unreal games enough to host one for Unreal 1

Thats a real shame, but i guess we gotta be thankfull for the time it did last. Back in the days i played everyday on the Jolt servers(Deck16 that is) and had great times dispite the botters lol. People that come to mind; Rednosed reindeer, Vein, Me , EvilSmoker, Hackman, etc.

But would be cool if you were able to get a server back somewhere. Btw, i am kinda surprised they also did shut down the UT server.

I'm going to be hosting for people soon, and I charge less than TNN

I just gotta get everything set up and figure out how to do things...then we'll see how this goes...and perhaps if you want I'll host for ya

Well let's face it Shiv, TNN was a joke - and not a good one either, more like one of those jokes that nobody laughs at, or the few that do only do so to avoid an awkward situation.

Anyways, Shivaxi's an excellent host. Drake's and the ER servers have been up 99% of the time from what I've seen.

I can understand the decision from a business standpoint. The server landscape is not the same anymore as it was 9 years ago. There are way less players in Unreal and servers are mostly run by players nowadays.

Jolt has done a great job for many years, continuing when NGI.it and Demon UK left the game. Now it's up to us as the community to keep enough servers available, and I think we're doing a damn good job at it.

I only can agree with many things here. Jolt did a very good job and there is not much else to do than to say: Thank You for the long times of service.
We will see that enough servers stay alive, no doubt about that

We can't quit after all the work 227 dev team has done!
