High CPU usage for servers

On the really large maps, the CPU usage can hit as high as 10-15% with only a single player!
I have a modern CPU, and it runs other games without this problem.
I had a friend that ran an Unreal server on a Dual 2.4GHz Xeon and it seemed that it was almost 100% usage with 12 players.
Why are Unreal servers the most CPU intensive?

I think that's because they're older. Don't quote me on that.

it should only really be that high with a high tickrate. It might also depend on what unreal detects your CPU as. 227f is much better with optimizations since it's on a newer compiler with lots more. I suggest upgrading your server to 227f

My server is already running 227f.
Changing the tick rates did lower the usage a little, but it still seems rather high for a game that is almost 11 years old.

what kind of mods are you running? could be some bad code eating CPU usage unnecessarily

What? CPU usage? Where are you looking to find it? If in the Task Manager, then make sure you look into the Performance tab. The value that is listed in the Processes tab is a relative percentage, it should be 100% unless you're also running something else.

My CPU usage is always at 100%...

Task Manager?
Haha...I use GNU/Linux.
By the way, this problem is not OS-related.
My Unreal server gets high CPU usage in Windows too.

I am running EDM5 and Infiltration.
The server name is ">< Shadow Mafia Infiltration Deathmatches"

when 0 players are in, is CPU usage minimal? maybe EDM5 has some server side client checks that can eat CPU power, I don't know since it's not open source.. Maybe smartball can help here

When there are 0 players, the CPU usage appears at 0%.
Task manager...not K Task Manager :D

Have you tried running it without any mods? The CPU usage on a plain server would determine if it's the game or the mods running on it.

Yes, I have tried it without any mods. The results were the same.

lol, even when i'm playing on a server with 30 players my cpu usage is still 5% ;D but i got a dual core

My usage with the client is usually around 50%. But, of course, I have all things maxed out.

Playing on a server and hosting one is completely different.

When playing either U1 or UT99, my 2.4 Ghz AMD Turion is always at 100%. Unreal is a really resource intensive game, especially with all the S3TC Textures and mods. Funny tho, cause Far Cry 1 has even bigger world environments, yet uses less CPU and RAM.

I noticed tho (after trying to track down a problem for someone turning off VSync to get higher framerates) that the UseSSE option in OpenGL settings dramatically reduces the resource usage (but makes the FPS go way down and doesn't run as smooth)

What will happen if we quote you anyways?

UT99 uses about 1/4 the CPU usage of Unreal when running Deck16 on both.
Perhaps this should be moved to the bug section.
I have noticed this problem for a long time.
Unreal is poorly optimized.

227f is as optimized as it gets without using SSE2 and onwards, as it's not simple to add such support for CPU instructions, i've talked to smirf about it and he plain doesn't have the time to add it right now. That, and adding instruction sets has a slight possibility of making the engine unstable.

All i know for sure is, only certain setups actually report the correct cpu usage for unreal, I've had a setup worse than a dual xeon and unreal didn't even use 20% cpu usage with my extreme overkill mod.

It is very possible the cpu usage report is off, and it's not actually using 100%, I'd suggest to run 3dmark or something to stress the CPU, record the temperature of the core(s) and then run the unreal server and see if the temp actually goes that high

.
I beg to differ there mate.
Jolt unreal shares a box with the UT servers,if anything, both memory and cpu usage is always higher on the UT servers.
Coop servers are notorious for crippling cpu demands, infact back in the early days of the NGUK servers circa 2000(remember them) i set up a coop server and promptly got a right good bollocking of the administrators because this single coop game was hogging 100% of the cpu, therefore the reason why there are no jolt coop servers :( .

Any one remember the "creeping ping" issue with Unreal servers under Windows 2000? where the cpu usage would steadily go skyward to 100% for no apparent reason. This was an issue with both Unreal and UT.
UT had a fix for this in one of the patches, has this issue been identified under unreal and the 227 patches?. Not that it needs it now as it seems to work perfect under XP.

I always did wonder why there were no jolt coop servers, if memory serves me I played with your daughter a long time ago, and she loved coop. But now I know why there are none.. interesting.

The "creeping ping" issue _should_ be resolved since 227a, as unreal has been enhanced with all of UT's fixes in net code.

Yes thats right, she doesnt play Unreal much these days and if she does its DM.
She`s all grown up now with a baby and her own place.
Yup..im a grandad ;D

Wow.. I didnt expect that one. Congrats to the both of you :)

Next time you talk to her tell her an old friend from unreal coop says hi for me will ya? thanks :p
