Wikipedia - Oldunreal needs some voices it seems

The official http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unreal removed again and again all information about Oldunreal, our patches, our support and our work for it. Some admin simply decided it to be spam.
Oldunreal now supports the community for over 8 years with thousands of downloads, updates, patches, now even native Linux support, one of the oldest and biggest forums and I think I can say its the biggest (and maybe best I hope?) support page for it.

You can participate and tell them what Oldunreal offers for the community here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Unreal

I don't know if that _WAS_ an admin, but someone who does moderate the wiki, as they warned me.

Try not to say anything rash; just post the truth.

They warned you about what? Since obviously you neither posted lies nor slander, what sort of behaviour could you have demonstrated that would have agitated a moderator?

Also, people have the ability to change articles themselves if they're members (dunno about this one). Maybe it's someone who hates Unreal and / or OldUnreal?

Under the linux support section i wrote something like "Also, the unofficial 227 beta patch on http://oldunreal.com supports linux natively"

and i put an external link at the bottom of the page {that was once removed due to being a fansite so i revised the text}

I popped a few "be nice for a change" pills, and wrote them a nice little letter. Always glad to do my part for OldUnreal. Hope it helps.

Oh yeah ... I'm tracking down the home phone number of one of their moderators here in Winnipeg. He's a friend of a friend. When I do, I'm going to give him a call and see what I can do. No promises, but it's looking good so far. At least my friend will let him know what's going on. Wish me luck.

Okay, I left a note at the talk page.

By the way: I have some bad experiences with Wikipedia in general; I used to contribute a bit to the Dutch Unreal article but they thanked me by giving a warning about vandalism. Since then I consider Wikipedia a read-only source.

I can definetly see why you feel like that now. It's.. shameful.

That looks like a war. Stay calm people.
Actually, we really should make transwiki links here. Liandri Archives should have space for that, especially as BeyondUnreal now links directly to it. I'll add some info there.

Nobody asked for to make wikipedia to an Oldunreal promotion page, but some information is outdated and because of that plain wrong. To change that and update these information is the only thing requested. A link to another wiki page may be a good idea also, but no replacement for that :)

I didn't get the phone number, but the message will be passed along. I think it will work out in the end.

I think it should be added to the official http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unreal page. If they take Wiki serious it should be added regardless. Unreal backthan was developed by Epic, who also made some follow up patches. After that, the entire game was further developed by 3rd parties like Smirftsch (from OldUnreal) and by myself as far as upgrading the textures.

Except maybe for the limitations in the amount of polygones that can be used, the game with all the new enhancements pretty much beats any game around, and frankly i dont forsee any game in the upcomming 5 years that will beat it even remotelly. Even brandnew games(Crysis, WOW, UT3, etc.) straight from the shelves does not offer (on averidge) any texture above 512/1024 pixels while Unreal currently can run 2048 pixels on averidge with jumps to even 4096 pixels.

On a personal note i spend thousends and thousends of hours painting all the textures, and i am sure thousends of more hours will follow(not to mention the thousends of dollars it costed me over the years, on hardware and websites). But dispite my work, nothing could have been achived without the work from Smirftsch, Kerilk, Chris Dohnel and many others who participated in the development, or were simply users from the updates, but made usefull badly needed criticism to improove everything down the line.

And that also includes companies in the past, like Epic, S3, Creative, Microsoft, etc., that backthan threw in their latest (read future) technology into the game. We all should be gratefull that so many things were added to the game. Even though on release they had lots of features unused, but were there never the less. Waiting to be activated..... And though Smirftsch couldnt get it done to activate it, Unreal DOES support even things like shadow casting from players. Which up to this day cannot be achieved by too many games.

I see Wiki as one of the most important database worldwide for info, and historical overviews that comes with it. Historically i think all progress made on the game after Epic stopped should be maintained for history. For that reason alone the whole part that came after Epic should be written and have the explanation why and how new development was achieved.

I would suggest that we all together write a piece that follows all steps in development after Epic, including data(as in timeframe) links, pictures, examples, movies whatever usefull (but most important, meaningfull) we can come up with.

Once done with that, even if it takes a couple a months, we should submit it to Wiki, signed by everybody that supports Unreal as it is now.

Good idea DieHard, it would fit in the "development" section there, or maybe in a subsection. Also, the article should include interwiki links too, if you want to look at it in depth, you need to go to LA, while if you need to see the technical sides of it - to wiki.beyondunreal.com.

great Job GreatEmerald. And yes, DieHard, I fully agree with you here, absolutely.
GreatEmerald, can you add it there? The textures are a that important update for the game, it simply must be in there :) - aside the fact many of my updates and enhancements would be nonsense without it.

Very well said Diehard !! :)

Also including a note about some of the maps from Unreal 1 (and their history) as they've evolved throughout the entire series, too. A few of the really popular UT200x and UT3 maps have their origins with the original Unreal we love.

:)

Added info on S3TCs. Thanks for reminding :)
By the way, anyone care to make a list on most known problems and how to deal with them on new systems? Like the FrameRateLimit= and things like that. Could be useful.

By all means, give me something to add to the Unreal Reference :-)

Unreal Reference? Hmm, for me it looks like very unstylish and stating only things everyone know... I mean, a small tutorial that would include only the most F AQs. Like I've said, it could tell about the OMP, 227, OpenGL, OpenAL and how to configure them so it would work.

And interesting thing is that the Wikipedia mod that strongly opposes adding links has also been warned for disruptive edits. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk: ... i#May_2008

For the record, he's not even a moderator at all, the user search page says he's a normal user.

I doubt that there are "moderators" on wiki at all. Even Admin is not highest there..
