Unreal Texture down

As people may have noticed, the Unreal Texture site is down.
And i look like its a repeat from what happened to my previous host. This time the site was suspended because it took to much resources from the server its running on.
I got an e-mail from the host upfront the suspension, and i took actions with the removal of a certain script, while i also gave a reply to them.
They missed my email and thereby my actions, and i got a mail today the site was suspended, and now they also complain about the size of the site.........
I decided to take drastic actions myself to prevent further problems, and i decided to have the site go back to the core activities which are Unreal and UT since i make textures for those games.
It also means that i deleted out all other sections being:
Unreal II
UT2004
UT3
And its unlikelly they will be back............
In addition to that i dissabled hotlinking with the exceptions of a few sites:
www.UnrealTexture.com
www.CelticWarriors.net
www.OldUnreal.com
www.BeyondUnreal.com
www.UnrealSP.org
At this moment of writing the entire site is suspended, which also means that the main download mirror for patch 227f as well as all the links to the S3TC packages are down and unavailable.
The problem now is, they try force me to upgrade my account to a VPS server. If they do force me to that, than the answer is simple, UnrealTexture.com is no more

The price for the cheapest VPS server is 40 dollars per month which is something i simply cannot afford, not even remotelly...... And that also wont be enough to host the site because that package is limited to 20 gigabyte of space while the current(stripped down) site is 75 gigabyte.
The only option for me that is left, is to split the site up into 2 domains and pay for 2 seperate hosting packages. Obviously this will double the costs on the site and will be a huge drain on my already almost empty wallet.
So lets see what happens next days, but count on being the site down for a couple a days even when the outcome might be positive. Where possible ill try keep briefing everybody here.

Aww

Why are all the hosts so evil? First you, then CWDohnal, then you again, then CWDohnal again... I guess you should have bought your own server :\ Lot less hassle.

diehard, how much bandwidth does that site use, and how much does that package have for a limit? my host seems to be much better limits.. I barely pay anything and I have a ton of it

Is Chris his site down also ?
And buying my own server is too much for me, that stuff is way beyond the money can spend. I am not anything close to be rich lol.

The site is big alright, as said the current stripped down size is 75 gigabyte(was 135 gigabyte) and the site consumes a bandwidth around 500 gigabyte a month. Pretty much 250 gigabyte for Unreal and another 250 gigabyte for UT.
The hosting package i have is 1500 gig of space and 15000 gig of bandwidth a month. And almost all providers give similar amounts, but the reality is, if you go over something like 50gig space/150 gig bandwidth they start to concider you as a problem seems.
Even they offer ridiculous amounts, they asume you will have a site with 200Mb of data max and a transfer around 30 gigabyte max.
But this time they started about the resources the site uses. Normally your site is not allowed to consume more than 1% CPU load for a duration of 2 seconds. And it seems that the site did exceed that on a few occassions.
But plain fact is, seeing what happens now and what happend in the past, they all promise alot but let you have almost nothing(at least not compared to what they offer). And keeping that in mind, the site is plain said,
HUGE, and will go cause problems whatever provider i choose. Effectivelly it can only be solved by taking a VPS package, and than you really are allowed to consume what you want within the package. But its way too expensive.
And if i would move my files to your account, than the same will happen to your account, it will get suspended.....
And i do appreciate the offer

But i need to solve it forgood somewhere, somehow. And i already did cut drastically in the filesize and hopefully they are willing to go ahead with that. And as last resort i could split the site in half like
www.UnrealTexture.com and
www.UTTexture.com

a long time ago, I got 1and1s free hosting package, and they gave me half off if I wanted to stay with them, I pay $4.99 USD a month for 1171.875gb bandwidth and 117.1875gb ish storage, with a file # limit and as far as I know, the only scripts they don't allow are real time chat relays. I can get you a deal to host there I believe,
edit: it was just cheap for a while, I pay regular price now.
the professional package is $9.99 USD / month, and its about double my current package, but just a little more. It says 250 GB and 2500 GB but it's not the 1024 mb > gb as we know it. But it's still way cheap. If i refer you I get a commision, and there's some deal with advertisements and cross linking to reduce the cost of the page.
My billing pays every 6 months but i'm sure you can change that.
If you're interested I can send a referral link thing

History repeats itself once more...
I regret to hear that there are so many hosts who promise things and then fail to deliver. I do know a
highly reliable host here, but it is something you'll have to pay for. Especially with the size of the project that you have.
Do you live in an area where they offer high-speed cable internet? Like
this? Then the best way may be to host at a home server. Not as fast as a good shared hosting or colocating but at least it gives you control.
Forget about this if you only have ADSL in your area.

Yes it is

Check it out:
http://www.cwdohnal.com/ Either nothing is put up there or it's down.
I believe that it would still be cheaper in the end... You wouldn't need to pay monthly, only once, and you can choose your server parts, and have total control without any hosts interfering with your site...

webspace was never my problem, only traffic. Since I limited my traffic drastically because of strict limitations (especially for those freakin download managers) its fine.
I dropped from 170GB/Month to 60GB/Month.
Many people don't know how devastating the usage of a download manager can be. It maybe opens 30 proxy links to increase download speed. Now take a file of maybe 10MB. So a single downloader produces 30x10MB traffic, means 300MB!!! for the page. And this only for maybe a speed advantage of a few seconds. So I denied those for my page here. Some very few users seem to have trouble now and thats very sad but unavoidable it seems.
I can give you back the favor you gave me, Diehard, I set up an own ftp for you here if you want, just drop me a message. So any base files can be hosted here as well.

This is not entirely true. A download manager indeed opens multiple connections to the same file, but this does not increase overall traffic.
Example, a normal download of a file of 10 MB is connection downloading 10 MB.
An accelerated download opens maybe 4 connections which all download 2.5 MB. It will not download 4x 10 MB. (This would actually decrease downloading speed instead of speeding things up.)
If your web stats reports it as 4x 10MB then this is a limitation of the statistics handler.
Aside from this, download accelerators can have a negative impact on performance in situations of heavy traffic. Normal users will see their download speed decrease.

well, that is not entirely true

Unfortunately I can't find the reports about it at the moment but indeed many download managers are making proxy copies of the files and so increase the traffic in the way I described.
and PS:
http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr
works just fine.

I've had experience with GetRight, and as the screenshot below shows: it makes multiple connections to the same file -or- connections to the same file on multiple hosts. It download parts of the file (the coloured bars, called segments) which are merged as soon as all the parts are done. Nothing more then the original file size is downloaded.
Additionally, because of the resuming feature, a download accelerator can reduce traffic to a site because a failed transfer can be resumed instead of re-downloaded all over again.
Edit: also see

Would I ever doubt Wikipedia? LOL
Well, I never said its every download manager. If used that way you are indeed right, but unfortunately there are these download manager which work the way I described and my traffic was real traffic

I'll try to find the explanations again for that, somewhere I must have the link...

Hi all,
I wanted to tell that the site is up again, at least for the moment. My host decided to unsuspend the site to see if my actions will work, and they will monitor the situation for the next 24 hours to see what happens.
The problem that remains for the moment might be the php script i use so people can see the downloads. But if it causes problems than its a bit weird to me since that script is running from day oné.
Alot has been written since my last post, so i limit myself to the last posts, but i want to thank all for the offers you made, and hopefully nothing needs to be done anymore.

You could simply make a black background and have a sentence in the middle of the screen like: utglr go
here ;)

lol, didnt knew they were on torrent
But it would be cool if there was another site also having backups, and to safe you time, they can be downloaded again from the site at these links:
MasterFiles High End
MasterFiles Low End
The UT S3TC files also have a new mirror on
www.ut-files.com so they are covered as well
And now lets hope that the actions i took are satisfying enough for my host...... But i guess we will see in the next day(s).

Actually, that might be an option to spread the files without consuming loads of bandwidth. Though, I don't know how you would need to proceed. My understanding of these matters is quite limited.
