Unreal Stereograms!!

Post by KillerSkaarj »

Hello everyone! I had the greatest idea ever to make stereograms of Unreal environments! I'm surprised no one had done this before. If you're interested in these, then keep on readin'!

First off, what is a stereogram? Well, Stereo = two, and Gram = picture. Two pictures. Two pictures in which you relax your eyes and let the pictures come together to produce true 3D!

WARNING: These WILL make your eyes hurt. It's only natural, and in fact, viewing stereograms is actually good for your eyes. You may start to get a headache though, so in that case, stop viewing the pictures, else ye shall make it worse!

How to view the stereograms

Start by relaxing your eyes. Simply stop focusing on the picture itself and just stare "through" your monitor. Then, slowly back up until the two pictures converge. After your eyes adjust automatically a bit, you will now be viewing the picture in true stereoscopic 3D!

NOTE: This is my first time ever making stereograms. I'm still trying to get the perfect distance between the images, so bear with me here.

Now without further ado, here are the pictures! Enjizzle! Er, I mean... Enjoy!

Nyleve, Vortex Rikers

NaliC, Pathway and Ramp to Tower
(this one's too large for OldUnreal. Clicky the linky instead) http://img382.imageshack.us/img382/1080/3dnalic.png

Dig, faceoff with a Brute (WARNING: This one is slightly awkward, so viewing this will make your eyes hurt a bit more than the others)
Image

If you liked these pictures (except maybe for the Brute one), then you'll be glad to know that more pictures are due to come.

Thanks! Now I know which picture to use as a template for later stereograms.

Wow, even my 128x160 phone got me with that... I'll watch it on a bigger screen after school.
But it's hypnotizing!

Nope. Nothing. I've never seen anything in any of the stereograms  :-/

Me neither.
You must construct additional pylons.

Yeah, as I thought. Nothing on the big screen. The two images should be separated a bit imo. Only half overlapped for me.

Weird, it worked for me... But I guess everyone sees things differently to others.

Nope, if they are separated, you'd need two different images so it'd look like a panorama. But I guess I didn't see this because I'm short-sighted. Literally.

You're supposed to back away from the screen a bit for the larger ones.

Couldnt resist trying this out:
(227e version only)
http://www.klankaos.com/downloads/Stereo.rar
It's a small console that splits up your view in 2 camera angles of players eyes, to use it simply:
- Place Stereo.u in System folder.
- Edit Unreal.ini
- Change console to "Console=Stereo.Stereo"
- Start up Unreal and ur ready to go.
Press + / - to adjust scale of the camera views (beware, your eyes and head start to hurt really soonly if you put any bigger sizes on and you should only play this in short periods ONLY).

Hmm, It's really tiny on my screen. Pressing + and - only messes the screen up. Good though.

Same here :(

But if anyone wants to experience a 3d effect while playing a game, just close one of your eyes. It should create a nice impression of depth especially with 3rd peson games. Haven't tried it with Unreal yet.

*GASP* YOU TRIED OUT MY IDEA! I feel special now! Erm, um, I mean... cool, I'mma try it out now....

EDIT: Aww, it's too small to really see any depth. Well, we could still try out the iZ3d. It's ridiculously cheap now. When it was released, it was $600-1000! Now you can find it for $300 (I don't think it could get any cheaper!). I'mma see if I can save up for it after I execute my master plan to get a UT3 runnable computer.

I tried to see that NyLeve shot in 3D again, with some helping dots in mspaint. And I finally got it, after about one hour of trying... You rule. :P

Hey Dot's, do you think you could actually make this work so you can play Unreal in almost fullscreen with your hud and crosshair set correctly? It'd be pretty cool.
