Ok here's something for you guys. A very simple question: who recognizes this sound? http://members.chello.nl/e.poortvliet1/sound.mp3

If so, from where?

Tomorrow I have something more to say about it :)

The interesting thing, there is a Star Trek DS9 episode where you can hear exact that same wind, forgot which episode it was though.

Tomorrow I have something more to say about it  :)

Ofcourse all you guys were correct :). This distinctive sound is a Unreal sound. The rip wasn't from Startrek but I'm pretty surprised that the sound is used for a Startrek episode too! (Nice to see another dutchy here btw ;) )

The rip I took was from a TV-show called Oz, in particular: S05-E08 'Impotance'. It's a show about some prison and it's inhabitants. For those who are interested, here's a little movie capture of that episode I took in which the sound is featured: http://members.chello.nl/e.poortvliet1/ozcut.avi

I remembered in earlier episodes I watched that I also heard other ambient dingly-ding Unreal noises but I thought that was just my mind playing up cause of to many deathmatch hours I recently had. Now I know for sure that it wasn't just my imagination :)

Not regarding to Oz or Unreal but I also noticed in movie shots where a cat is in, the same cat voice sample is used in several different movies :). I guess there's a lot of ripping or 'borrowing' among audio editors. Or maybe they just use a to pay for audio database for them sound effects.

Yep its there alright :)

Looked the episode up from DS9 and its ''The siege of AR-558" In that episode the crew finds themselves on a planet that is under siege by the Jem Haddar while they are protecting a communication array. Its also the episode where Nog looses his leg. Interesting thing, the number of the episode is also 558.

Episode number 558
Season 7
Episode 8 (DVD: 2nd DVD last episode(8))

Tried to find a scene on YouTube, but couldnt find any with the specific wind. In the episode its almost all the time on the background, but only direct outside the compound. Best audible is between 33.00 min and 34.00 min.

As for the sounds, theres numerous companies that have sound effects on stock, and i asume companies that have use for them simply buy from that stock.

But its an interesting find :) , and obviously it points out what kinda freaks we all are  :D

Too bad the particular Startrek episode couldn't be found on Youtube etc. I'll keep it in mind though.

I know I've heard Unreal's sounds used before; I just don't remember where.

Crazy thing happened to me on the way home from work the other night though. I was driving with my sunroof open, and the wind made the exact noise in the clip you linked. Maybe this actually was a different recording that was similar. You can always ask Alexander Brandon though; he's still around.

Yea, actually the crickets, owls and buzzs are used in Age of Empires 1 & 2. Think Unreal uses a general sound bank, like DOOM used to.

I just played AoE 2 now, and realised that. I never noticed it before!

Bumped?

Well whatever, lots of games use the same sounds from other games/movies and these are proof that Unreal does too. :)

Also, there are some sounds in Unreal that remind me of Quake 2. :)

OMG Gizzy was faster than me again. :P Blame my evercrashing router.

Well....I noticed this also, there are more sounds than just this wind and it was not used only at these examples, it seems to be one of common sounds...

I've never heard the wind in Unreal.unr anywhere outside Unreal though. It's not that realistic, but it's a fun sound :)

Actually it is, i have heard wind like that several times in my life, and i dont have a mic to tape it, but the chimney in my toilet makes almost exactly that sound all the time. So as far as i am concerned, its real alright. Not to mention i asume that the original file simply was taped in the wild.

Aah, chimney... I never actually seen (and therefore heard :D ) a real fireplace or chimney close up in my life, I think. So it makes sense.

I don't have a fireplace, but I have an unused chimney (or even two) and I have a pipe in the bathroom that connects it to the outside and there is always noise coming from there when it's windy outside. Although it doesn't sound like the wind in Unreal.unr, it sounds almost exactly like an other wind from Unreal, although I don't remember which one atm but I'm 104,5% sure it's also from Unreal.
