Unreal Crash

Hi everybody - I'm new to this place, and Im having problems with Unreal.
I've decided to study the original Unreal Engine (1) as it maybe would help me out in game developing.
One of the things I would like to do is to play through and study the original Unreal game. However, problems arise. When I start it (Unreal Gold) everything works fine, but after 5 minutes of playing or so everything freezes, and eventually I get a BSOD. This always results in a total computer freeze and I have to pull the wire out.
Changing from Direct3D to software rendering solves the problem - but then the studying of the engine kinda loses its purpose...
Does anyone have any idea of why this may happen? For Unreal testing I use a Acer Aspire One netbook with an integrated GMA graphics card. I have DirectX 9.0c.

Very much sounds like thermal issue. Notebooks are not really the choice to play games with - or did you play some equal game for the same amount of time?
Especially with these "not really for gaming purposes made GMA cards" you surely can have trouble. Latest drivers etc?
Also you can try the updated renderers or the new 227 version of Unreal which provides even newer versions for D3D and OpenGL rendering.

Well, I have 1.5gb ram and a 2.8ghz processor, so Unreal should work fine...
Equal games - well, Deus Ex for like 10 hours straight, Warcraft III for some hours, and a whole lot of other games
The netbook is often turned on for 10-15 hours each day.
Also, I have no hard drive, only SD cards - just because of the heat that hard drives can generate...

Did you install Unreal to the SD card, and run it from there? I don't know if Unreal can be run like that.

The netbook has as default an SD card instead of a hard drive - so everything, including Windows, is on the card. So there should be no difference from using a hard drive...

Does it fail at the same place, in the game, each time?

No, it's completely random. It happens after maybe 5 minutes or so - once it was like 10 minutes, once like 3... But usually around 5.

try the new renderers or 227 as said already. Or a glidewrapper maybe. I can recommend Zeckensack Glidewrapper if you want to try. Glide was always best for old versions without updated renderer.

A BSOD cannot be caused by software on its own. It usually involves buggy driver or hardware. As your hardware seems fine, I would take a serious look at my drivers. Also, updating the renderer can workaround buggy drivers, so you can try it too.

Wow, I almost bought that laptop. But I got Lenovo S10e instead, it was cheaper. However, I didn't yet install Unreal, but when I do so, I'll report if I get a BSoD.
BTW, I have a 4GB SSD thingy and 80GB HDD but I've formatted the HDD and partitioned it, because 4GB is not even enough for all downloads I made in first few minutes of use.

I have two 16gb SD cards

Would I have a hard drive, my netbook would literally melt down
