Help for a beginner

Post by PrimeviL »

Hello i'm new to this game (i come from Quake) and i don't know how Unreal works.  Maybe someone could help me:

- Dunno why but my my FOV 120 isn't saving to my user.ini config (only FOV 110 seems saved)?

- Can i load ingame a custom config.ini?

dunno enough about quake to tell you unreals equviliant to a config, so you'll have to explain.

in 227 the FOV max is 110 to prevent cheating by using FOV as a fake zoom, but we might increase it if you can give us a good reason, curious to why you'd want it that high as well

Thanks for your reply :)

I always play with a high FOV because my feeling with the game is better. The game seems more fast and i really love that.

About config, i try to load a separate file (binds.ini) with the EXEC command like for Quake game but it doesn't works. My custom config is more clean than the user.ini. Check the sample:
///////////////////////////////////
// B I N D S . I N I
///////////////////////////////////

///////////////////////////////////
// M O V E S

Z=MoveForward
Q=StrafeLeft
D=StrafeRight
S=MoveBackward
RightMouse=Jump
Ctrl=Walking
Alt=Duck

///////////////////////////////////
// W E A P O N S

MouseWheelUp=SwitchWeapon 1
MouseWheelDown=SwitchWeapon 2
A=SwitchWeapon 3
f=SwitchWeapon 4
Space=SwitchWeapon 5
E=SwitchWeapon 6
R=SwitchWeapon 7
X=SwitchWeapon 8
JoyZ=SwitchWeapon 9
Shift=SwitchWeapon 10

etc...

Every players do that with Quake and i want to know if i could make the same with Unreal. Maybe with a commande line?

two options I can think of would be to have multiple .ini files and rename them as you want, or to make a text file that sets a bunch of files. The latter sounds more like what you want.

make a text file in \unreal\system, call it 'binds.txt' or whatever. To change a bind, you use the command 'set input '. Get the list of keys and actions from user.ini. Executing a text file will run every command in the file, so what you want to do is put a bunch of set input commands in the text file. In game, type (or bind it to a key) 'exec binds.txt' to execute the text file and change your keys.

Hope that's helpful. Honestly what you're describing just seems bizarre to me, so I don't know what you really want.

there is no way to automatically load this every time. you should exec this, exit the game, then readonly user.ini and it will always be set

exec config.txt with tab or console and the file should contain..

Code: Select all

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
;; M O V E S

set input Z MoveForward
set input Q StrafeLeft
set input D StrafeRight
set input S MoveBackward
set input RightMouse Jump
set input Ctrl Walking
set input Alt Duck

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
;; W E A P O N S

set input MouseWheelUp SwitchWeapon 1
set input MouseWheelDown SwitchWeapon 2
set input A SwitchWeapon 3
set input f SwitchWeapon 4
set input Space SwitchWeapon 5
set input E SwitchWeapon 6
set input R SwitchWeapon 7
set input X SwitchWeapon 8
set input JoyZ SwitchWeapon 9
set input Shift SwitchWeapon 10

Thank's a lot guys, it works like a charm !

Do you have some tips for increasing my movements' efficiency during my multiplayer games? Maybe by some links for downloading demos of the best players?!

Sorry if i'm boring with my beginner questions :-[

someone else will have to answer that for you, I play coop, I never liked DM in unreal for some reason, then again I never liked DM in ANY game..

The only thing I've heard of is ASMD jumping to get super healths or amps or some such but I dont know how they do it quick enough for it to matter

You said you were used to Quake, so you should not be lost in Unreal. The only thing you'll have to master is dodging and lift-jumping (jumping when the lift you're on is about to reach it's highest position). Otherwise, timing items and so on is very similar to quake :)
You must construct additional pylons.

Unless you already use this keyboard configuration, having the main movement keys close together can be critical in moving more effectively.

Never use your movement keys for turning, always strafe and leave the turning to the mouse.

Now here's the buttons I use as my movement keys when playing Unreal.

Of course, the arrow keys are used for moving forward, backward, strafing left, and strafing right. The Ctrl key is used for crouching (and it is imperative that it is the Ctrl closest to the arrow keys) and the Ins key is used for jumping.

If your keyboard has does not have a numpad, and therefore no Ins/Numpad 0 key like the one in the pic, then you use the Shift key instead.

Having your movement keys set up like this allows all the imperative movement keys to be within easy reaching of your fingers, without having to waste time by moving your hand across the keyboard.

Now, I don't know any of that stuff related to coding or fiddling with Unreal's system files, but I hope this helps.

I use UT3-styled WASD controls as it allows you to use a lot more buttons. As in UT3, E is Enter/Use, Space is Jump, C is crouch.

Yes, I don't recommend using the arrow keys for movement as the number of controls near your hand is limited. USing WASD/ZQSD let you have nearly all the keyboard at your disposal to bind you weapons.
You must construct additional pylons.

Well if you have a whole myriad of buttons all assigned to different things, it can get confusing. I was talking about the *essential* (keyword) movement keys which would benefit in combat. I doubt you'd have a sudden desire to select and open up your translator in a fight with a Skaarj.

During combat, you'd really only need forward, backward, strafing, jump, and crouch as well as your mouse for primary/secondary fire and cycling through weapons.

Out of combat, there is no need to get to the other buttons faster therefore it is irrelevant if it takes you more time to do other commands.

Besides, with the format I use, the item cycling buttons and the Enter key are still within fingers' reach.

Since items are not used in multiplayer (or almost), you can bind them on anything you want, but at a certain level, you have to be able to select each weapon individually at any time without cycling through the entire arsenal you're carrying. Hence, most player bind each and every weapon to a certain key. I don't have a suddent will to open up my translator in the middle of a fight, but I may have a sudden need for Cannon flak or quickly switchung to sniper rifle, and I don't do that by cycling through the weapons.

Of course, some people do, but if you're doing a lot of multplayer games, binding each weapon is a big advantage (or disadvantage if your opponents did so and you didn't). ;)

As for things being confused, It's just a matter of binding a weapon on a key you naturally search for. For instance, i have the rocket launcher on mouse4, the sniper rifle on mouse5, Minigun on spacebar, flak cannon on mousewheel up and sting on mouswheeldown. Razorjack, dispersion pistol, automag etc. can be binded to any key surrounding my zqsd setting, and I'm fine with it :)
You must construct additional pylons.

WASD keys to move, E to jump, Comma and fullstop for previous and next item, Mousewheel up and down for next/previous weapon.

In my current state (Fractured wrist) I use left-click to move forward, right click to move backwards, mousewheelup to jump and Mousewheelclick to fire. Rather primitive, but that's all I can manage ATM :D

Ouch. Have a quick recovery. :) I know how's that.

Additionally, my PreviousItem and NextItem are on Q and E, respectively.

I use a version of wasd

Basic movement: a=left,s=back,d=right,right-mouse=forward
z: jump
alt: crouch
left-mouse: primary-fire
space : alt-fire

weapons: w=sniper-riffle,e=8ball,f=throw-weapon*
and some other stuff on near keys,

* not sure if quake has throw-weapon - but if you are going to play DM at all its worth experimenting with for a couple of reason... :)

I've experimented a lot over the years and this setup works well for me..

Also, I have r set to select last picked up inventory item, as this is generally what i always want. If by chance I want a particular item, I use the standard keys.

You tend to get use to what you have quickly - so I wouldn't worry about changing you key setup, leave it a couple of weeks and change it again. It took me quite a while to get mine just right - but this suite me perfectly (well not quite - I still tinker with it form time to time).
