Meh, that happens to me pretty often. When I went to update my dad's blog, the hit counter on all blogs stopped working next day and were down for a couple of weeks.

About the news, I never used FileFront, because I upload everything to http://thedarkside.net63.net/ and I don't know how good or bad FileFront is.

What I see is that all the links I know for Unreal Bonus packs, for instance, are on Filefront. Other mirrors require FIleplanet accounts, paying subscription or other things like that. Loads of good files hosted only on it will also be lost and it will take some time before evetyone upload his works and files elsewhere.

That is not good.

Well, the forums are gone, now, but there were forums and the link for them is still on the game pages (at least for Doom3).

WHAT!? No!! The ONLY website where you can host and download files for free is going down!?! Great! Now we're stuck with greedy companies who want you to pay for an account to download something that's supposed to be free, and if you don't pay, they make you wait a minute just to download it AND CAP YOUR DOWNLOAD SPEEDS SO YOU GET MISERABLE SPEEDS ON A BROADBAND CONNECTION!!! THAT'S BULLS**T. FileFront was awesome, they let you download at your own speeds and on your own time. Whenever I had an option between FileFront and some other File hosting site, I always picked FileFront. Now I'll have to click RapidShare (The name is misleading. it's only rapid if you PAY THEM MONTHLY. If you don't, they cap your DL speeds so you can't dl over 100 kbs a second, AND they make you wait.), Megaupload (25-45 second wait times), FilePlanet (Oh don't even get me started on this one. LISTEN FILEPLANET, LEAVE THE LINES TO REAL LIFE AND STOP MAKING ME WAIT OVER 30 MINUTES JUST TO DOWNLOAD SOMETHING.), and OTHER mindless bullcrap.

Really? What's wrong with the last statement? Haven't you observed the world around you? Look at the Tobacco industry. They don't care about you. They care about your money. They even purposefully add addictive substances so that you keep coming back for more. Bastards....

Well, to be honest, i think FileFront was a supurb deal. Anyone can simply create an account and store files having plenty of space or filesize. And to keep them forever you can submit them to the site and they never will be deleted. There is no download que or any other commercial crap. The download speed is super, i have been downloading lots of files last days (read furter below) and i got downloadspeeds from over 1.5 mb per second. Which means i could download 600 Mb files in under 6 minutes.



I downloaded a corupt file from FileFront and had to turn to FilePlanet to get a working version. At FilePlanet they forced me to install a download manager which i was unable to bypass like previous occasions, and than i had to wait till it was my turn and the download took over an hour  >:( For a louzy 30 Mb large file........... Go count......



And i do kinda agree with KillerSkaarj on this, mainly because its kinda weird you have to pay to bypass all above to get files that are fully open source and free to spread around. At least they could minimise the hassle(read crap) you have to go through to get free files. If my site can do it, a commercila site should be able to do it as well, and still earn money on the quadrazillion commercials they already run.



No, FileFront was awsome and it will be misssed, though theres a few people that have the full backups(all 48 TeraByte) from FileFront and are working on starting a new site, and lets hope they pull that off.



In the meantime i have been downloading all files from:
Unreal
UT
UT2004
UT3
UT2003 is in progress
Unreall II has been downloaded already by Azura, and he will turn the files over to me later this week.



So far i have downloaded 42 gigabyte of data in the last 3 days. Hopefully i will be able to download the entire UT2003 section before the site goes down. But i am positive i will succeed in doing so seeing how far i got in the last days.



All files will be added to [url=http://www.UnrealTexture.com]www.UnrealTexture.com[/url] on a later shedule after i sorted out everything, but prob within a week or at most two weeks from now.



It also means that the Unreal Texture site two weeks from now will be the largest Unreal series site by far and having 400 gigabyte of downloads per month growing with another 20 gigabyte per month. So far only FileFront was larger, and i know the site passed crappy FilePlanet months ago. So it will be a new milestone for Unreal Texture

The sites i have do cost a small fortune, at least to me since i dont have to much money. But the costs are relativelly low and the site has 1500 gigabyte of space and 15000 gigabyte of bandwidth wich should be more than enough.


But needs to be said, the previous host kicked me out because the site was a too big drain on their servers. And i honestly admit it scares me a bit, cause the site could become over succesfull. And just now i checked the bandwith for this month and its already at 460 gigabyte, which is 60 gigabyte more than previous month. So in some respect i hope the growth will stop soon.


And while the site hosts all Unreal series, it seems that only Unreal and UT users have discovered the site because the downloads are pretty much split in half: 225 gig of bandwith for Unreal and 225 gig of bandwitdh for UT, the remaining 10 gig goes to UT2004 and UT3.


But if needed, i will split up the site and thereby split up the stress on the servers. But that will double the costs as well obviously  :-/

Blimey, that's loads!

Looks like today is the day.. I checked 5 minutes ago, and Filefront is still with us. Not for long.

Theoreticaly it should aready be down, but yeah its still up. And i dont mind really, because i still have to retrieve a bunch of files.
