Couldn't they make the storyline and game play to where when you play it alone, you were meant to be alone? And when you coop, it was meant to be coop?

For the "you're supposed to be alone" storyline, GSC did it quite perfectly in STALKER. But Unreal as always been less "serious". (fast fps, less realistic etc... opposed to the slow, thrilling and terrifying stalker), so this might not be taken as positively for an Unreal game.

Dunno. For U2, Worch said it was because of the many scripts happening : a second player would have caused a trucload of problems with interrupted scripts etc... It might depend on the next version of the engine. Currently, it's not possible to make a heavily scripted non-linear single player game with it without massive reworking of the AI, scripts and triggers (like they did in Deus Ex and it's sequel).

Incidentally, that's what you do in stalker : exploring and learning about the zone (and slaugthering occasional mutant of course).

Unreal 3 better have coop support if it comes out :(
Seeing the new Epic policy, I'm quite sure it will.
I think it would be better for everyone if no U3 was ever released. It would have the same effect as Doom3 or Q4 on long time players of the old games : people would have such high expectations it could never match it.

Moreover, it is clear today that coop is not a common feature anymore. U2 didn't had some, Doom3 and Q4 either, Stalker and Mirror's adge didn't... The only big games to feature it currently i L4D wich revolves entirely around it. Otherwise, it seems to vanish more and more.

And anyway, people would have contradictory expectation about what they would like to see in U3 so it would divide the community even more. Since UT3 pretty much killed the Unreal community, which was still very lively around 2007 and is much more calm, I think it could only worsen the situation.
Umm, no... I think you're totally wrong here. U3 would attract more people, and it would even popularise U1 and U2 a bit. The fact that U2 didn't have co-op doesn't mean anything: it was meant to have co-op, but due to lack of time it wasn't finished (as I've mentioned, if we looked into native functions and such we would probably see that everything's already there, but not turned on).
Expectations also don't always matter. Everyone expects a lot for UTs too, but we get surprised every time. Does that make the game unpopular? No, it doesn't. UT99 was popular, UT2004 is popular, UT3 will be popular! So whatever they make Unreal 3 like, it will be popular. And if Epic won't release it too early (and seeing their new policy, I guess they really learnt this lesson), it will be a helluva game.
UT3 didn't kill the community. It's still there, just in the shadows. Each news post about upcoming updates on BU are discussed as nothing else! The fact that players don't show up in internet games doesn't make the community dead.
unreal for me was more about the exploration and learning about the planet
I agree. The most important parts of Unreals were exploring and story. Both Unreals gave us the opportunity, and Unreal II gave us even more - an ability, although briefly, but still explore a lot of different planets. I don't think that would change. And Unreals were never fast-paced FPS - those were UTs. Sure, they might be faster than other FPS, but that doesn't take away the option of doing everything slowly.

Both is correct. For example, take Smirf or somebody who does great things for the game. But, I never saw him playing online.

Also, smaller sometimes equals better: is a large noobish community better than a small one where everybody knows each other and there are no[t much] noobs? :P

And I don't mean newbs, I mean noobs, like this:

I pretty much said that in some other post out there.
But hey, no arguement here about that.

I don't play much online, but it doesnt mean I don't play Unreal.

If you think this way, QuakeWorld's community is still a vast and powerfull one.

But actually, Quakeworld is dead : servers are empty (>10 connections a week last time I checked).
Even if you love the game, when it reaches the point at which it is just not played anymore by anyone, there's not much to do.

Well actually there is given the ressucitation of some games (like u2xmp after a few threads on Beyond unreal ;) )

Congratulations, you have just described Unreal II XMP current community :) Having a small community, it's almost impossible to be unfriendly, or you won't have anyone to play against at all...

Hum ? Don't understand the question :s

EDIT : oh, you mean where can they be found ?

Well FrenchFrag factory still has some active members, Quake2World has been announced by some mod makers to keep it up to date and I found that Quakrworld.com has been bought recently (was abandonned years ago). Very active and important people from the Q3 community still make maps for it, including Matthias worch who worked on Unreal 2 (atlantis level anyone ;) ) and of course a basic google search will tell you more :)

Unofrtunately, You'd be lucky to find someone on a browser today :(

Wait... All of Quake or Quake 1?

Don't know much about Quake. I've played it and I found out the hard way to not use that lightning gun thing underwater.

Quake 1 is one of my favorite games. Love using the Lightning Gun underwater when there are some enemies to gib XD Even more fun if you have the Pentagram of Protection, you can watch them get gibbed.

That happened about 7 years ago when I used the lightning gun under water.

Yea, I meant that. However, the first link reports that the last post in the forum was on 07-01-2008. Quite far from now, eh? I don't see their community being active...

Talking about underwater weapons, it reminds me of Red Faction... Being under water was quite a disaster there, because almost 80% of your equipment would stop working, and you were left with only the most simple pistols...

Well the game is 13 y/o now, so it's pretty much in slowmo ;)

planetquake's forums are more lively, and yes, messages are from 2008 too, and still, as I said People are mapping for it (signs of koth is not so old).

On the other side, there are almost no community dedicated site for u2xmp and it's still played ;)
