display issue

Whenever Unreal crashes and boots me to the desktop (doesn't matter if it's a gpf, runtime error, w/e), it turns my display VERY bright. I go into display properties to try to get it back to normal, but that doesn't work. The only way I can get it back to normal is to reboot the pee-cee. I use OpenGL and my vid card is an Nvidia GEForce 6200 AGP (LoL :D). Any ideas on a fix?
Oh, it happens with 225, 226F and 227.

It's a known problem, as far as I know it just needs brightness resetting. You can do that by going to Unreal again or refreshing your screen in some other way (on laptops you could press FN+F5). There are also programs for resetting the brightness.

Ive had that often with my old card, even when i did shut down Unreal properly. Somehow the OpenGL brightness keeps hanging.  And like you, the only solution i had was rebooting the system, annoying, but it works........

The card i had it with was a Geforce NVidea FX5900XT.

My current card (Geforce 9800) doesnt seem to have that problem, nor did the card i had before the FX5900XT. So i kinda asume its also videocard related, either your lucky or not.

I have the same issue. I usually just open the ut2k4 UnrealEd and then close it and the brightness goes back to normal.

Happened to me on my old PC with Quake3. Simply use DirectX or just enter Unreal again and exit. That worked for me every time.

enter Unreal again and exit.

I tried that backthan in the hope it would kick the OpenGL function again, but never with any result, doesnt mean Bah could give it a try. I didnt mention it because it didnt work on me, but maybe it does for Bah.

Hmm I tried to reproduce that glitch but can't seem to do so. Another solution which you could try: change your screen resolution to some else, then back to normal.

if unreal crashes in OpenGL (as well as other GL games) with an unhandled crash, it isn't able to restore the previous gamma settings and since most players have a brighter setting for playing than desktop's default this problem occurs.
Older NVidia drivers had an option to restore gamma, newer drivers doesn't seem to. No idea about recent ATI drivers.
In linux its pretty easy to "fix" with xgamma command. In windows...well no idea if there is a tool floating around or a hidden option in the drivers.

There is a utility called gamma panel - ive not used it but you can download it for free and it claims it will reset you gamma setting in Windows.

I heard about Adobe Gamma Loader too.

Yes, Adobe also provides a tool called Adobe Gamma that changes your gamma and probably resets it. You can find this icon if you have Photoshop in your Control Panel (if you have an x64 system, it will be in "View x86 Control Panel Icons" folder). I haven't tried that yet, though.

Happens to everyone who uses opengl eventually.
Hardly ever happens to me but when it does only a reboot will correct it.
No big deal for me as I can count on one hand the times it's happened.
The gamma corrector may work well,no clue.
Keep us posted if anyone finds an actual working fix eh?

I suspect that none of the tools that can adjust the brighness/gamma will work. When i had that problem, i could alter the brighness and gamma with my videocard and even do a reset. However the error that occurred never was willing to reset, it somehow keeps hanging.

Basically whay happens is, the error occurs and the brightness/gamma is messed up, which means outside the game everything is over brightened. All the tools at my hand backthan the brightness/gamma could be turned down, but this is on top of the error, it doesnt remove it. And that is what you need, something that removes the error itself.

Gamma Panel claims: it stores your default settings, then when you start it, you just press Esc to reset to these defaults.

Like I said - I haven't tried it..., but it sounds like it would do the right thing...

First of all, thanks for everyone's help and suggestions. I always know where to come for assistance. I downloaded the gamma panel utility that DaveAnd suggested, but of course Unreal hasn't crashed to desktop yet. Now that I've asked for assistance with the problem, it'll probably never do it again ::). But I'm going to try to force it to, I think I know a way.
