Unreal mods with atmosphere

Post by Fallingwater »

Hi everybody :)

I'm usually criticized when I say I think Unreal I is still the best videogame ever made, but I'm firmly convinced I'm right.

However, I've played it too many times, and now I know every level by memory. Sadly, I no longer have much fun replaying it, as I know everything that's expecting me.

I've downloaded some mods, but few have managed to keep me interested for a significant length of time. The reason is always the same: compared to the original, they lack atmosphere.

So I ask you: are there any singleplayer, multilevel mods (conversions, connected map packs, anything), for any Unreal game, that manage to reproduce some of the atmosphere we all know from the first Unreal? You know, the Nali cities, giant rocks suspended in the sky, beautiful landscapes... the general feeling of awe and amazement?

Thanks. :)

Sadly.. IMHO... no.

I hate to bum you out, but really nothing has been created by 3rd party mappers/modders that compare to the original unreal lineup. Some are good, but too short. Some are long, but lack the awe you were speaking of.

If I were you I would hop over to UT99 and play some some of their single player campaigns like Xidia Gold / deja vu / ONP / Zephon (I would recommend you play Zephon with a few friends because of the challenge level).

The ones I listed are the best I've seen .. but still not as good as the original lineup. (oops I forgot Seven Bullets)

I'm afraid no :(

Some mods like Xidia Gold on UT99 tried, but I always felt they had a strange feeling. It's not Unreal.
You must construct additional pylons.

I've played few mods and I can recommend you: ONP, Illhaven Saga, 7 Bullets, Nali Chronicles, from non-unreal related there's Spatial Fear. Zephon is fun, but gameplay is not well balanced for SP so as Jâçkrâßßit said it's good for coop. If you'll wait  some time, there will be Firestorm and TCO (Unreal themed mods). Of course there also will be Residual Decay, but for this one you'll have to wait a little bit longer as it's not near completion.

If you're interested in small campaigns there's demo of Point of View - a small mod I was developing long time ago. But it really has very strange gameplay and protagonist :). If you want to play it, here's link: http://turniej.unreal.pl/pliki/mapy/sp/pov_demo.zip. If you want to comment/complain about it - you're most welcome to do it, as I still has a plan to develop it in near future.

IMHO the Unreal beta maps are awesome. I tried to convert one to 227e but didn't work (as usual).
