Can we keep Unreal 1 from disappearing?

Unreal1 is slowly getting smaller and smaller. Shouldn't we be trying to spread word about this game to keep it from disappearing? I would hate to see such a wonderful game like this be forgotten. And I hope something can be done to prevent that.

Much has been done already. Unreal is released again as part of the Anthology pack, Unreal is available on Steam and OldUnreal is busy with patch 227 which brings Unreal to the 21st century.
If this does not help, nothing will.

I'm doing a playthrough of the game on YouTube to try to spread the word of Unreal. Then there's all of the new re-releases of Unreal 1, as Hyper has said above. Unreal is receiving so much love from its so few players that I doubt it will disappear anytime soon.

Well, it's old but still alive; if it's still alive, it'll be for X years more.
And X could be anything from 5 to 500.
The only problem is: new computers are too strong to run Unreal: unwanted doppler, etc.
Somebody should find a way to implement CPUKill-like thingy directly into Unreal. For example; calculate
Code: Select all
sqrt(sqrt(int(rnd(1)*65535+1))*sqrt(int(rnd(1)*65535+1))*sqrt(int(rnd(1)*65535+1)))^int(rnd(1)*100+1)
every tick.

Unreal is like Doom and Quake. They are aging dinosaurs of the computer FPS style, but they can't seem to die. Search the web for news about Doom (how got always more custom engines, remakes, new wads...), Quake (Which, of these three game, is I think the most played), and Unreal... Well, look here
There are so legendary that they will, maybee not always but for a very long time, be played by fanatics. Don't you wonder why some speedruns are still being made on Quake ? the world record keeps getting harder and harder to beat, I know it, I have tried).
The real problem for Unreal is that the engine is close-sourced when id Software opened all their old engines, giving them a new breath (this incredible Warsow game is running on a free Quake 2 engine). But since Epic has allowed Smirftsch to get his hands on the engine, there are no reasons for it not to keep living...or at least dying slowly.

Unfortunately Unreal is as dead as it has ever been before.
I don't see it recovering as it has in the past.
Unreal has and will always be about community and the deathmatch community has moved on.
Hellkeeper said it best in his post above me.
The fanatics are the only ones that will keep it alive.
Most of us could care less about co-op,infil,serp,ufe,etc.
Nowadays at peak playing hours you won't see over 55 players ever and most of them are playing co-op or infil.
We have a small group that plays a few maps now and then but it gets boring quickly mostly because we've been playing the game forever.
I will always have a special place for unreal but it's just time to move on.
Sure,I'll play a game or two now and then until Newbies servers die and then it will be over for me as well.
Good luck with keeping the game alive you fanatics, you're going to need it.

Unreal will get more attention once 227 gets final. Guaranteed news on BeyondUnreal, Planet Unreal, that would probably fit Wikipedia, then reviews all over the place and there you go - live Unreal again. The only problem is that even then it will probably be temporary. The engine of Unreal is old now, and many people just go to new ones instead of battling with all those BSP.
I also focus mainly on UE2 because I don't have UT3 (yet, until they release their expansion). Newer engine = easier to create good content, and that's what matters.
And lol:

Tell a friend. Tell a bunch of them. That's the most direct thing you can do. Bring in good players and the game will be that farther from dying. Get more players and it'll be easier to bring in new players later on as well.

As always peole look at the amount of people online, while the community is alot larger than that, for the Celtic Warriors site each month some 32 gigabyte of maps, mods and other stuff is being downloaded, and thats per month !!! Lol it never stops
As for the Unreal Texture site each month theres some 150 gigabyte of pure Unreal downloads(and that includes S3TC textures), and yeah same story here, thats per month !!!
Which means my sites alone have 182 gigabyte per month on downloads for Unreal, lol, i mean someone must like the game seeing those amounts :D
I personally suspect that theres still some 4000-5000 people playing Unreal, which is not bad for a 10 year old game, and unlike what people said, those downloads have been steady for the last 3 years and i still dont see a drop. And UnrealTexture was born because the CW site kept going down each month because the enourmous amounts of downloads.
And keep in mind theres others that offer files like the SP site, OldUnreal, Hyper's, FileFront, FilePlanet, BeyondUnreal, etc, etc. And when i look at that, i think the ones remaining simply refuse to let the game go

Understandebly

I think one of the biggest differences in Unreal and the newer games now is this:
The newer games seem to have less configurations that the user has to configure, they detect your hardware and net speed and set up the game for you to an extent.
Unreal on the otherhand as we all know has so many options and configuration choices I think it overwhelms new players, or they simply don't even know it can be done or have the knowledge.
I can't tell you how many times players have been on my server over the years with a netspeed of 2600 and they are on cable!
But I do know this...
Admin should spend more time on their servers (including myself)
and help out other players, especially the younger ones, to learn how to configure their game, or give them good links to learn about their questions, or answer simple questions, because the younger players are the future on Unreal if it is to have one.
And yes I know there are some irritating players that mock that and try to act ignorant just to have fun with the admin, but it doesn't take long to figure that out.

Which is excacly what the Celtic Warriors server always did, we ALWAYS took the time to help out new players and demanded from all players in the server that they should respect new players. Within the clan we even had a rule to kill a new player only each second time, and the other time, just walk by him(her) or run away to prevent such a player being killed all the time. And on better moment engage a mock fight and let him win.... And in that way you keep newbees happy, and for sure they almost always came back and kept comming.
Needless to say the server was always packed with people, and for years it has been oné of the most popular servers around, it was always packed with people.
The servers isnt there anymore because we lost the finances to keep it running, otherwise it still would have been there. Threat newbees always with respect.

Diehard I have to say that was an "EXECELLENT" policy.
Players that have a good gaming experience. on a server will come back, and players that have their game configured properly to dispaly the game and run at a good steady rate will keep playing.

About netspeed, we do have a warning when you first click on "play online" that you have to set up your netspeed and player? Or is it UT?

Well, that all makes sense now.
Cooperation within the community will keep this going, but if this community gets too large there wont be total cooperation within the entire community which may cause another fall in it's popularity.
I see it as keep it small and together or have it large and divided.

Hey DieHard, very interesting.

And I 107,45% agree with that. Cuz newbies will not come back to a server where everybody is killing the f**k out of them.

Newbies are NOT going to come back in large amounts. The only people Unreal can expect to attract are fanatics like us, a handful of nex people, and some older players that may want to see what all the fuss was about in "the good ol'days".

Very true, but that should not keep us from being optimistic about Unreal 1's future with 227.
So basically Unreal 1's future depends on 227?

Before I stopped playing, a large percent of the INF SO players were new players who had only been there a few months, and there were always a few completely clueless newbs around.

There is always a newbie which later becomes a noob. I mean, I was playing Coop nicely, DCrater, start and that n%b name to bother me. I had Jumpboots and everything, all shields, and he started to "kill" me with blue DP. I warned him about [ch8734] times and even suggested to go to DM and he said nothing. Then I said "Hello. Press T to talk." and he said "Hello." and continued shooting at me.
But when I was a newbie (this summer, in about June), I've actually played my first online Unreal game that moment, I remember some gr8 guys helping me out with everything possible, every secret, and now I think I play Coop pretty well.
EDIT: Off-Topic: I just found out that I'm actually NOT on the DSL waiting list (8 months living in a lie) so I filled out the form and should get DSL until Xmas, like everyone else I know. Ain't that sw337? 8-)

Unreal 1. Not UT or Unreal 2. Even though those games don't deserve to be forgotten at all.

Unreal is the best game ever. It amazes me every time again I start any map.
