OldUnreal (Engine)

I have alot of serving equipment which is no longer in use... and I want to give back to the Unreal community...

If someone is willing to administer a machine (Dual proc/2 gb ram, 100mbit inet), I will provide the machine for free. I do ask that you share the wealth a little bit by providing servers to others for free in the Unreal community, this is non profit, if the administrator decides to try and turn a profit, I will shut the machine off... I wont give this to just anyone, but there are quite a few people out there who I would have no doubts on giving it to.

This is no charge, but I also want no hassle (I dont want to install mods, and write software, and troubleshoot issues, and get emails about lamers)

I must note, you must use RDP (remote desktop) to administer the server, or... once you remote in, setup some other way to manage it if you want to go that route.

Admin password if changed needs to be sent to me as well, I wont manage it, but you never know.

I can do remote desktop, I was actually wondering how i'd do it, thought maybe you had some snazzy php page for admins or something, but that will work.

I used to, whenever I charged for hosting, but I need some me time after 5 years of game hosting. So I am giving someone else the reigns to do with as they please.

I am going to see who all applies, and yea, jackrabbit cant have a server, thats another niche in this whole thing...

So I guess that addresses jackrabbit, no... you wont be considered.

I'd put probably put some serpserver again on it and some classic coop maybe...or DM? Or CC? Or Inf? Not sure...in any case whomever it runs later- generous offer, big .

or... once you remote in, setup some other way to manage it if you want to go that route.

How many servers/players can this handle at one time?

It's dual processor so i'd say around 8 low end servers that aren't processor intensive IF they're running 227, and maybe 4-5 without. 227 really does run alot more efficiently on the cpu if it has extensions as such.

edit: but obviously I'd have to find out for sure, I've never ran a dedicated box before for servers, only administered a single instance of a server farm that was only supposed to run 1 server application

yeah what happened was that if we ran the server, CPU usage would rocket up to 90% and everything else would be damn near useless. We didnt have full admin rights so I didn't feel like hacking it up and getting sued/ loss of server etc.

I will unblock it, but just so everyone knows, if smirt wants the server, he is probably going to get it no questions, but hopefully he will help provide servers to those in need, I would be willing to put up more machines if needed.

I think that's a good choice Dan. 227 needs some more support and this would give it a chance. Smirftsch has alot of support to handle this as well.  8-)

Smirt and his selected admins will be the admins. It is nothing personal against anyone I did not pick, but Smirt has a long time reputation of being a backbone for Unreal, and I see him as the perfect admin for this Unreal community donation.

So will this run just 1 server or host multiple ones? Good info to have, I'm not even worried about getting one myself though.

btw smirt what type of server will it be?

pretty sure he'll be running his serpentine server, and it will be more than one, probably 4 though, i'll have to do some performance monitoring to see how many can really function

Well if my PC can handle a server plus everything else (Firefox, Photoshop, Animator, Unreal of course...), then that machine should handle at least 4 servers, if not much, much more.

well, Pitbull asked me about a TAM server and I want to place of course Serpentine on it. Thinkin about a classic coop or classic dm server. Suggestions are welcome of course
