Bump Mapping

I think that Unreal 1 doesn't have REAL bump mapping (i.e. the textures with pipes) are just drawn like 2D and not 3D. Is it anyhow possible to make it 3D?

Nah...

Your right, they are just drawn onto the texture in 2D...its laughable to think that Unreal could have actual bump mapping...the entire engine would have to be changed to support it :P

Yeah... I was just thinking... But, if the engine is changed that much, it wouldn't even be Unreal 1 engine anymore! ;D

I think it's doable. There's even place for bumpmap in texture properties. It should be possible either in base render or OGL/D3D. Theory is really simple, but implementing it into Unreal Engine not :).

EDIT:

I really think it could be done by messing in rendering engine only (it doesn't change that's rather complex task).

So it can be done? :o :D

Everything can be done :) but it's time consuming task. Personally I have no skill in such things (was playing only in OGL bump mapping). Here are tutorials:

http://www.paulsprojects.net/tutorials/simplebump/simplebump.html
http://nehe.gamedev.net/data/lessons/lesson.asp?lesson=22

Even though there are tutorials I believe it's very hard to integrate bump mapping with U1. But I think that if dynamic shadows are not created, then bump mapping will have to wait too.

I will look that over when I get the time and when I get to my PC. It's not easy to read and look at the pictures on a cellphone at the same moment. :)

Sooo... What's bump mapping in plain language?

Bump mapping is a computer graphics technique where at each pixel, a perturbation to the surface normal of the object being rendered is looked up in a heightmap and applied before the illumination calculation is done (see, for instance, Phong shading). The result is a richer, more detailed surface representation that more closely resembles the details inherent in the natural world. Normal mapping is the most commonly used bump mapping technique, but there are other alternatives, such as parallax mapping.

I said plain language :P That's like what you get when you use the UT3 link gun alt fire on a surface?

Never played UT3 :). Bump mapping gives illusion of more detailed surface. Look at images below:

http://herakles.zcu.cz/~miva/projects/Bump%20Mapping/big.jpg
http://homepage.mac.com/arekkusu/SW/i/ParallaxBump.jpg

what you see is just flat surface with absolutely no details at all. It's bump mapping that gives illusion of very detailed surface. Picture below shows same object with and without bump map applied:

Yeap, that's what the Link Gun in UT3 does - show the bump map on the textures on lower settings. Probably because it doesn't take much resources to display only that small portion of the bump map...

Actually, textures which are made like they're rough look like they have bump mapping on them, but when you look closer (even 256 for TINY details is enough), you see that there is no actual bump mapping.

In spite of the fact that I still have dial-up access, I will download 227fas soon as it gets released. ;)

ooh, does this mean you'll add in a 227 NephthysProxy-like actor? I got some good uses out of that thing.
