TNN Master Server Shutting Down
Since it looks like master.thenerdnetwork.com has been bumped off the list per the main website, I have decided to shut the machine off.
master.thenerdnetwork.com will be going offline within 2 weeks without any further notice. Anyone who uplinks to it should probably take it out of their INI file to stop error messages (if they receive any).
With shutting it down, all of the TNN Public Deck16 servers will be going with it.
Again, thanks for the years of support and patronage, I wish the U1 community the best of luck.
Dan
P.S. That is the same machine with original hardware that TNN first started on, it has ran non-stop (besides a reboot here or there) since December of 2003. Just a fun fact.
P.S.S. I need to add this in... www.thenerdnetwork.net will remain online, as well as all hosted sites, as well as customers with dedicated servers and colocation. In effect TNN is shutting down, we are just going dormant.

with main site you don't mean the mainpage here?
I didn't add TNN there because its already in 227e ini by default....

I'm suprised he posted, he let all his servers shut down and hasn't answered any support questions in months. Even after posting this I don't see anything new from him on the TNN site.

Im sorry to hear that Ikuto. Unfortunately I dont know who ya are, but im sorry.
And Smirt, yea, I thought you were influenced by jackrabbit to take it off the list... I will keep the server up, but I will have to repoint DNS to a new IP because I have decided to surrender my /24 subnet.
It really sucks to know that I worked 5 years on this, and lost it all, and like only 1/8th of the people in unreal have any sort of sympathy, like, people think that i meant to do all of this... and like, I tried my hardest to provide quality servers over that time to people...
I was the only person operating TNN, I tried bringing people in, but it just did not work... so imagine supporting around 100 clients, handling thousands of dollars of income, managing the accounts payable, doing software development, managing hardware, doing advertising... all on your own? I mean, geeze, i busted my arse the entire time, and all i have to show for it now is alot of angry people and 15-20 server machines and a slew of networking equipment...
Cut me some slack, please, I am sorry... I really am, what more do you want from me? I mean, I dont even go to my own website that I poured the last 5 years of my life into because of the fear of seeing the people I let down... I mean... have at least an ounce of respect... please...

Not a nice thing to say Ikuto. I've known Dan for many years . I rented a server from him in the past and found it to be topnotch. Dan never banned anyone without a reason. Minus 100 for you. Think karma here. Some day something you have worked very hard on may be taken away.Fuck the TNN. Dan believe me when I say that all the Old Unreal admins have nothing but respect for you. Don't let a few rotten tomatoes let you think any different. Don't sell yourself short, there are a lot of people who support you. That being said i think you should contact some of us admins here.

Guys what the f*ck is going on here? I mean, this is ridiculous. Fight everywhere. http://www.freewebs.com/unrealpcube/guestbook.htm There is no reason for those sh*t. I mean, think before saying something stupid. This applies to everybody. Don't fight all the time for no phucking reason. I mean, . Is it really necessary to take fights everywhere all the time? If you're phucked, chill out. Don't always fight and fight.

Remember Pickledegg? The thing you done caused a chain reaction to a resonable extent. Good it's in past and i hope it wont happen again.
And ok sorry i shouldnt have fight'd against acidrain and entire company just because of one fucking big incindent that caused unrevertable consequences to me. Wait wtf they are almost reverted now. Good thing that Pickledegg left.

That always happens to me.Some day something you have worked very hard on may be taken away.
Still remember that: he has banned me without a reason, because a server was crashing and i was only another admin out there! WTF!Dan never banned anyone without a reason.
That might be very hard. +1 resp.imagine supporting around 100 clients, handling thousands of dollars of income, managing the accounts payable, doing software development, managing hardware, doing advertising... all on your own
Bs. My Rep is Const. 1#INF01Minus 100 for you.
Lets forget that but i will never forget that.Im sorry to hear that Ikuto. Unfortunately I dont know who ya are, but im sorry.
Wait what all TNN servers will keep up? =)I will keep the server up, but I will have to repoint DNS to a new IP because I have decided to surrender my /24 subnet.

Re: TNN Master Server Shutting Down
I can only repeat, TNN found its place already in 227e and I put it there for good reason. Of course there were disagreements but from my side I can only thank you for your support. Especially when the other master servers where down your server was the only one left until we managed to bring these additional servers up. And all I can say thank you for that, you never charged the Unreal community for that to my knowledge.Im sorry to hear that Ikuto. Unfortunately I dont know who ya are, but im sorry.

I don't know actually where all these problems, this - well I almost tend to say "hate" is coming from- some people maybe made some bad experiences with TNN as server host, at least that are things I heard and this might be the projection of that.
Still it doesn't change the work you put into all this, so its great that you don't let us down here. And I ask everyone to think about that before judging- even if you had personal trouble of some kind- if with reason or not - it doesn't change the support we got from TNN overall.
I see it that way - you don't need to like TNN if you have your reasons and I don't ask you to rent a server there, but at least show some respect and thank Acid for what he did.

I guess. I'll thank him for putting his services out for Unreal, but I will continue to hold my well supported claim that he swindled many honest people out of their money. I'm not going to go into detail; the last thing OldUnreal needs is pointless controversy.. however, Jackrabbit was correct all along, and I believe he needs to be recognized for that. Take this recording of a conversation we had when this issue FIRST arose (TNN's master server "malfunctioning"). Seems like the only one who had any sense was the one this guy went AWOL on.
He knew the truth all along.

Re: TNN Master Server Shutting Down
I think the good that has come out of TNN in the Unreal world severely outweighs the bad. I think the customers who were denied their servers during the final month of TNN should be refunded, and I don't think Dan was responsive enough on his forum. But I would never turn around now and say to hell with Dan and TNN, or call him a terrible person. For the past few years when I popped in and out of Unreal, I always recall the TNN public servers having people in them, and in fact a good chunk of DM servers were hosted by TNN. I can't imagine activity having survived in the DM/TDM world without TNN, since the only active servers either were TNN pubs or were hosted by them.
I don't agree at all with the way the terrible situation at the end was handled, but that can't make you condemn the years of service offered by TNN. I would commend TNN on what they offered to the game, and commending TNN is the same as commending Dan, since Dan is TNN. Dan, I think you could have done a better job at the end, but all in all, thanks for everything you've offered to Unreal. It's unfortunate that it ended in such a way.

Re: TNN Master Server Shutting Down
Well Dan do you not think that it would be better to face these people and try to satisfy them instead of completely vanishing? There is a reason people have friends and just people who work alongside them, it takes a load off their shoulders and allows them to do more. You could have gotten a few other people into the business with you, I mean you couldn't be doing all that bad to have stayed up all these years. There are plenty of people who have the knowledge to do these things and would probably would have been willing join up with you. There is always a trust factor of course, but after all the years you could have gotten to know quite a few people well enough to trust. I don't disrespect or hate you, but I think the vanishing act was wrongful and you should somehow compensate the people who you have caused issues for.
I can't stand how you need to put 2 cents in everything, if you have no reason to post then avoid it. I know others like you who post for no reason, bugs the hell out of me ( This isn't a flame ).Idk wtf is going on here but I'm staying out of it.

Re: TNN Master Server Shutting Down
Thanks for the support guys...
I will try to address everything...
For one, the master server will stay up, I will however, have to re-point master.thenerdnetwork.com to a new IP in the coming weeks. But it will be in the same facility with uninterruptable power.
I will keep the pubs up as well, I am not sure how used they are, but I will keep them up.
To address what happened and how it was handled... that is such a tough position...
TNN was growing quite large for one person to handle, but I was still pushing on... I bought brand new equipment capable of handling more connections and more servers, and nearly depleted the funds, but the growth was there and I did not anticipate a system failure of such magnitude.
When TNN's master server (server that controlled all others) failed, I did not know what to do, how to handle it... I tried getting the machine back online, I had several machines for this purpose... but the data was not recoverable....
So, when the server went down... everyone who had a service... was emailing me, the new subscribers were threatening to leave, and I had no way to keep them, their data was essentially gone. Immediately I saw the end coming very close, very quickly... I bought too much new equipment, had too many servers in too many locations, that I had upset the financial balance and it was not recoverable...
As for not refunding people... I am lost on that, any subscription payments that were coming in, I cancelled, and immediately refunded. To refund people who missed out on a week or 2 of service would have been an impossibility.
I cant apologize enough, and I wish there was some way to make up for it...
The lack of response was because I was getting between 50-100 emails a day... some just wanted to know what was going on, others were not so nice. All of this was just too much for one person to handle at that time... or for anytime...
I had thoughts about doing gameservers again, I just dont think I have the heart for it anymore... and besides, I think I soured my name as a gameserver provider.
Again, I am sorry, and I will continue to provide a master server until the end of time.
Thanks,

Thanks,
