Installshield Engine

Hey Boys and Girls.
I have WindowsXP Home sp2.
I tried to install my Original Unreal ONE, and I got this
"Installshield Engine encountered an error and needs to close"
So I searched ther knowledge base,
followed the instructions on how to fix it, using regserver etc.
That didn't work.
So the next step it said was to reinstall Installshield.
So it lead me to a redistributeable 3.1, and renaming 3 files to
.OLD using cmd.exe, which did rename the files.
so I install the Installshield and it keeps doing the same thing,
it goes through the install process and right as it reaches %100
and you think cool, it throws up that error.
IF I look, c:/unreal and all the files and folders exist, but nothing in the start menu, and if I try to install, it says right at the beginning
something about "Uninstall" didn't load or something, then it lets you go through the process and does the same things at the end.
if you delete all the Unreal stuff, and even references in the reg,
and try, it's goes back to the first situation...
OH, if I go to Add/Remove it is there but trying to remove says it can't.

Er help ?
Answer ?
Suggestion ?

Hmm... Can't you just run Unreal.exe and make that shortcut yourself?

Yes. What's the problem in that? My RAM module died a while ago and Windows maybe got f*cked up so I installed windows on a new HDD and Unreal is not really installed, but the files are there and it runs with no problem.

You may install Unreal manually.

1. Make a folder named "Unreal" or whatever you want

2. Copy next folders from Unreal disk (or wherever your Unreal installation files are) to the folder you created:

- Help
- Maps
- Music
- Sounds
- System
- Textures

3. Download and install latest 227 patch to your new Unreal

OFFTOPIC: Why many people thinks that everything needs to be installed? Almost every old game IS portable and needs no installation. Including Unreal.

DITTO!
I try to "unarchive" installers before installing stuff.

Indeed, many games are installed only for convenience. You can even put UT2004 demo on a CD and play from there! :D

I would like to add that my Crysis, Quake 3, WoW, Steam (and games there), Doom 3, Supreme Commander, UT2004, Bioshock and UT3 are not installed on my computer. I just unarchived/copied them or they are old installations from my previous Windowses.

Actually none of my games are really "installed". So, that means they are PORTABLE.

Ps. Only Oblivion is really installed on my comp, because it kept saying "You need to install Oblivion and kiss my ass".
