Cool facts behind Unreal

Did you know most of the names of ships (and the planet itself) in Unreal are names of real life places? Well, I found this stuff out after I curiously searched for them on Wikipedia. The names listed here are names of things in Unreal followed by their real life counterpart.
NAMES
Vortex Rikers - Rikers is actually a real life prison located in New York, NY. Taken from Wikipedia: Rikers Island is one of New York City's large jail facilities[1], as well as the name of the 413.17 acre (1.672 km²) island on which it sits, in the East River between Queens and the mainland Bronx, adjacent to the runways of LaGuardia Airport.
Bodega bay - Bodega Bay is an actual bay in California
Na Pali - Na Pali is actually the name of a place in the Hawaiian islands, specifically the name of the coast of the island of Kauai. The planet Na Pali was named such because of its almost tropical environments. Most of the trees actually look like Hawaiian palm trees, so that comes as no surprise either.
MUSIC
K_vision - The track K-vision.umx used to be named Nightvision (opening it up in ModPlug shows this). The weird thing is that this song was never originally intended for Unreal, as an earlier version appears in a zip file containing most of his earlier works of music. All songs made for Unreal have "for the game Unreal" or something similar in the comments (as far as I know, anyway), but Nightvision does not have this. Instead, it tells the listener to "watch for our new Windows mdisk: "Oracle" coming soon!" and informs them that he'll "see you in your dreams".
Found99 - Have you ever seen the old Unreal trailer with the catchy music playing and the first person view of that early, awesome looking version of the Automag? Well, that song was actually hidden in the game itself, in an unused track called Found99. Playing the song normally, you would hear a rather industrial type song. Playing the second section, however, yields the catchy (IMO) tune from the trailer.

That was a fast response
But yes, I would like to visit Na Pali. I just hope the ship doesn't crash into it

XD

Probably something else with modified letters' ASCII codes and double R. That's how I do some of the names.

From what i read in an interview long time ago with either Mark Rein or Cliff Bleszinski i forgot. The atmosphere, mood, textures and storyline came from the movie Event Horizon.

I tried to look up the scene but my DVD player is being a retard and refused to run the DVD, nor was i able to make screenshots with my computer. But there is a scene where it can be read on one of the airlocks where it says Vortex. And i asume the name was combined to Vortex Rikers.
I know there are more references to be found in the movie like textures and other stuff, but since i couldnt watch the movie >:( i cant tell where.

I also uploaded 2 trailers from the movie, in total crap quality but alla:
In flv format:
EventHorizon.flv
In mov format:
EventHorizon.mov
If ill got time in near (read far) future ill rip the trailer from my DVD in the highest quality possible and add it to the site as well. Since its Unreal history it should be on the site permantally. Well any Unreal fan should have the DVD anyway lol.

Ahhh!! I watched the full length movie for the first time today and it is definitely worth a watch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even more interesting, in watching the movie I have identified an exact replica of an .uax sound in one of the unreal packages!!!
In the AmbAncient.uax package the sound scaryN7 is without a doubt featured in that movie. Particularly, when the one woman crew member sees her lost child in the hallway and falls to her death trying to follow him. I recognized the sound the first time I heard it, then located the .uax sound and compared the two. They are exactly the same.

Yep, that's very often, but does movie lend game's sound or vice versa?

Sometimes it is the first case, sometimes the other.

Actually that's the case.

Usually games use a standard sound base from some sound packaging sources. That's why you can hear the same sounds in different games. Of course, there are also some unique sounds too.

And more games made on the same engine usually have at least one same texture and sound package (except if the games are *TOTALLY* different).

GES in BioRifle = Green Exploding S**t
ASMD = And Suck My D**k (Some random movie quote..cant remember which one)
The Redeemer is the name of some church near Epics HQ in maryland(?).
It was from a interview with David M and Myscha The sled dog.
Random Observation : Cursing prohibited in a community that plays violent games is rather odd.

Yea, but there are better community suggestions for the names

GES=Glow Emitting Sludge, ASMD=Automatic Shock Manipulation Device. or others.. http://www.oldunreal.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1202638257

OK, we got off topic by talking about who likes and who dislikes strong language

What's with Chizra then? Guess Slith comes from Slithering.

In BoA (Blades of Avernum, a 2D pretty old turn-based RPG, nice game), Slith is a separate race (Humans, Sliths, Nephils) and it's also like some kind of reptile.

Idk about Chizra...

Ah! I remember Event Horizon!! No wonder it reminded me of Unreal. I thought it was because my brother was watching it in his room with us and I always associated him with Unreal cause he always played it.
The most vivid parts of the movie that I remember are when the guy folds a piece of paper and pokes a hole in it, a guy standing out in the vacuum of space with pieces of himself coming off like water, the "meat-grinder" thing, the big rotating rings that when aligned form a portal thing, a guy going into said portal, and the woman falling to her death and hitting the ground (I thought I saw her explode into a million pieces like in (you guessed it) Unreal when she hit the ground. But it turns out she just got covered in blood. That was the point I stopped watching the movie).
To tell you the truth, the movie also reminds me of when you first meet the Drakk and visit the Drakk homeworld in Unreal II.
But that's irrelevant, because the thread is about real life names that were used in Unreal 1. Maybe I should change the title...
