Running Unreal Server in 226 or 227?

Hey guys! Been reading your work and wow, great job on keeping the game alive! I have been active in alt.games.unreal and alt.games.unrealtournament for nearly 10 years myself. Something about this game just makes it so great!

Anyhow enough ass kissing, now my question. I like to run a ded server out of my home box for some co-op fun with a few of my Unreal buddies who still like to play occasionally. This server is strictly co-op and most of the people who play are pals, though it's public and we get joiners from the general game population.
Those things being considered, would it be in my best interest to upgrade to the latest 227? I read the changelog but it seems more created for admin control, which is not really a problem on co-op.

Thanks for any input on this. I run a rented UT2004 invasion server, and frankly I don't have time to do boatloads of research on doing a simple Unreal ded server. Whatever opinion you have will probably be what I go with.

a 226 server is a bad idea all around, theres lots of weirdness with both versions of it.. i'd say 227 would be better, that way only 1 client version is not allowed.

You'd have to turn allow old clients on for the 227 server though

Ah ok, that's really cool! So I can update the server to the latest version but I still won't have to force a download to clients?

I might delve a little deeper into this. I have my own fast redirect for my UT2004 server so setting it up for fast redirect on Unreal would be a simple matter. Guess I'll contradict myself and really dig into this. I mean after all, it's UNREAL!!

I don't mind to do the homework on my own to set things up, but I would like to have a bit of direction. Can I follow the release notes for the 227 and pretty much be ok? I'm not a stranger to the Unreal engine. I have mapped, coded and made a few mods for RPG so I'm not afraid of technical. BTW, thanks for such a fast reply.

the redirect only works with 227, and it wont help non-227 clients, so be aware of that

Yeah, I appreciate the heads up on the 227 redirect. I was reading all about that on the forums and all. Downloaded the 227, I'll report back tomorrow when I install how it goes.

someone should really waste some time and write a FAQ about these questions including a server howto for it...
Anyone? :) ¿

Nevermind just that. All of the server and admin stuff, plus UEd tutorials on all of the new stuff available with 227. Having it all in one document, or at least listed all together in one spot would be nice.

Compiling all of the guides, tutorials and notes for 227 goodies here is also a great idea. How about a list of links to all of the various ones floeting around now, so they can all be put together into one volume?

Post the links in a new topic, if somebody's got them all.

Yeah honestly you *need* to put  that in with the 227 download. There are many who would download 227, see an exe only inside the zip and discard it for several reasons, the least of which is lack of install support. There are several things people must know up front before they install, and I am afraid many may just see this as a "patch" and not be aware of what it actually does.

Having to go to forums and read about installs is just not what people want to do. And since I think *my* opinion matters so damn much ::) ::) ::) I'll also add you should change the changelist font and the pdf stuff to a very simple bulletpoint presentation with arial 12pt in a txt format. As an admin I want as much install info on the screen as I can get if I am going to have to refer to it as I set things up. Save the cutesy for the website, which is well done by the way. I like the green on black. I also found this some time back:

Look for Unreal font. I've used this in some maps I have made, it looks simply awesome. There's a nostalgia factor that can't be beaten when you see that capital U with the sharp lines coming out the sides. Anyhow, thought I might share that.

226 should be avoided for servers. 227 is good if you want to test the beta patch to see how it performs on your server. 227 already fixes many bugs and annoyances from 226 and earlier.

Until Unreal 227, version 225 was considered to be the best server version.
