Currently the maps submitted for the 2008 Custom Map Tournament are as follows:

1. DmZahltagOps - Buster (Review)
2. DSS2700 - Cargo Bay - Tronovision

Tournament Host Server(s) - RoK Deathmatch Server

Participating Unreal Clans - Not sure yet...

If you are interested in submitting your map (must have been made in within the last year or has had significant updates) send it to me in a ZIP file using the Skaarj Monuments Map Submission Board. I am still looking for interested administrators to host the tournament any clans which might be interested in participating in the tournament (please PM me if you are interested).

I had an idea to come up with some kind of tournament (maybe a clan war) where a number of maps selected from that particular year could be the basis for an annual tournament. Mappers could submit the maps they released that year and perhaps 10-20 are selected for the tournament. There would also be a few unreleased maps thrown in so that none of the players know the map and have to quickly adapt to the setting to defeat their opponents. Any takers on this idea (btw, you can count me in!  :P)?

Support. Would be nice, but actually how do we track all the maps? If we had an uploader sctipt... Actually, why don't we have it? Even with basic knowledge of PHP it's easy to make an uploader script with a limiter, that is, unr and zip extensions.
And with the other part, you're thinking of hosting the games on a protected server? Would work, but then allow spectators ;)

I'm liking this idea... I would submit a map, but I do not have a finished one (1 being in the works and about 5 completely lost).

A voting system could be good too. Same goes, easy to do with even basic PHP. Even more, all uploaded maps could be automatically listed and added to vote, and each person could choose 20 or less best liked maps.

Shiva, it would be a nice addition to the "surprise" maps there ;) Those who get to play see Deck16, think "Wow, I know this map!" and suddenly BAM! He's in the slime ;)

I have an uploader script on the Skaarjmonuments Website where any interested mapper could upload their map to be considered for the tournament (please include all necessary map files in zip format). All maps that I recieve would be hosted on the website and I would create a new string here on OldUnreal where players could download and try recently submitted maps. After the map acceptance deadline (to be debated), a voting system for all of the maps will be created and users can vote for the map they wish to see in tournament based on submissions. There is also the possibility of a few additional secret/unreleased maps to be included covertly for the tournament as well.

I am still looking for interested parties to host the tournament, however if no one comes forward I may be able to arange something personally (any interested sever admins, please contact me for details).

Absolutely. Your map Dm-ZahltagOps has been a hit and will likely be one of the 20 or so chosen maps.

I like the idea of including a few souped up classic Unreal levels, feel free to submit it when you are done.

I added the first two map submissions for the 2008 Custom Map Tournament. Feel free to try them out and dont hesitate to send your map in to be added to the listing.

If there are any Unreal clans interested in participating in the tournament please PM me and I will add you to the listing.

Cheers!

I can offer up the RoK DM server if you need a server to do this in. I dunno if anyone cares one way or the other, but it's a U.S. server and it runs EDM5. Just wanted to throw that out there. :D

Update:

Thanks for your support, this sounds great! I cannot see anyone having a problem with using your server for the tournament. I am still thinking of the best way to organize matches and will likely be affected by the number of participants (I have yet to hear from interested clans for the tourney). So if you are still interested when the time comes, the RoK DM server will be the primary tournament server!  8-)

In my optimism for the success of this event, I am leaving it open for other interested server admins to host the tournament as well since I don't know if a single server would be able/willing to handle all of the matches.

In terms of when the tournament is going to be, I was thinking of a tentative date in December (2008 of course!) for the actual event, however I am flexible and open to any suggestions though. I was thinking of having a map submission cutoff about a month before the event and a public voting system to determine which map will be used in the tournament in the few weeks before the tournament (votes will be undisclosed until after the 'vote counting date')

Once again, thanks for your support! Cheers!

(P.S. I am not sure what EDM5 means. Is it a server OS?)

Oh, and how many maps should be in there? And what gametypes? Of course DM, but should also be KOTH, TDM, maybe CTF, maybe even co-op (whoever touches the spot first). And I think that the maps should include classic ones as well, like 1 map for each gametype that was created in 2008, another - earlier (maybe up to 2000?), and the third one - classic (original or simply older). Would be good to have a match with a some kind of a mod as well, for people to confuse a bit :)

All good ideas. Gametypes other than DM will be included in the tournament. In terms of the number of maps in the tourney, I am thinking 20 (not set in stone though) and to try and make an even spread of TDM, CTF and possibly a few coop levels. I am not sure about KOTH since it is less of a team oriented gametype and it's pretty much every bot for himself. Depending on the number of submissions of each gametype it may be necessary to include some classic maps to reach the 20 map goal, however I want to include as many custom maps as possible and the classics will defenitely be on the back burner.

What kind of mod did you have in mind? Serpentine? Monster Mash? The latter would be fun if there was a collective team score function possible in MM. I think a mod level is worth a thought but I am afraid of the possibility that some users do not have the files needed to play certain mods (namely infiltration and serpentine with the huge number of associated files required). Will think about this...

I also wanted to mention, if you happen to have made a UT map in 2008, feel free to convert it to U1 and submit it!

Can the maps be made in 227? as in using 227 only features?

Yes, however I will have to consult the server administrators to see if maps made in 227 will be playable on their servers (if maps are not compatible, I may need to get my own server to host these maps). I realize that 227 brings with it a lot of great features and effects but try to use any effects (such as particles) sparingly to save on framerates (I am currently trying to defeat a FPS nightmare myself!). Other than that your only limitation is your imagination! ;)

EDM5=Enhanced Deathmatch version 5. It's along the lines of UTeamFix. :P
