Need help playing Old Unreal like the old days
Hello
I used to play Unreal years ago through my old dial up connection via wireplay, happy days.
I was recently given the old game by a mate. I downloaded patch 226 and went online. I was instantly hooked again but disapointed by the lack of numbers and the fact that the only map of old was Deck16. What happened to all the old maps? Am I looking in the right place?
Do people still play Serp and Infiltration and is it worth downloading them?
I can't remember much really and am stil pretty rubbish. So what I'm really after is an idiots guide in what to download, what settings to use in the game and which servers to play on. I just enter the online game via the multiplayer option at the moment.
If anyone could post links to downloads or help at all I'd love to see you all online for a game.
Great to see the old game still alive and kicking

If you need the basic patches, I've got them. If you need the popular game mods (like Serp etc), I've got them too. If you need almost EVERY editor tool for Unreal 1, well I got the works. Plus, scripts and such.
I've also got 40+ of the "best" maps for Unreal 1 (at least in my humble opinion). Help yourself to whatever you need.

And welcome back, and thanks for keeping it Unreal, eh.

And get 227c patch, that one will help a lot! http://www.oldunreal.com/oldunrealpatches.html look at the first two links.
Coop servers have the original Unreal SP maps in cycle, but some of them are, well, badly balanced, like one has a penalty of spawning 5 monsters if a player is killed... And doesn't give weapons... So overall I like Zombie's Coop serv the best

You need either WinRAR or 7zip to open the file.

Just a warning about playing with 227...Just downloaded 227c but my PC doesn't recognise it, just a blank file appears.
Stumped already.
All of the antibots running on pre-227 servers are old. They were made well before 227 was released and the creators have moved on. As a result, 227 will look like a cheat in any server running a pre-227 anticheat, with very few exceptions. UProtect, used on all the Infiltration Standoff servers, is an example of one that WILL kick you if you try to use 227. 227 has it's own anticheat, so you'll be able to play on any 227 server, but most servers are still 225 and might kick you for trying to use 227. If you have the disk space, installing two copies of unreal will let you play on any server.
Hopefully all the servers will be updated. It'll probably take at least until the bugs are almost all fixed and the updates stop coming. Until then, you'll need to use 226, 225, or 224 for some servers if you don't want to be kicked.

You don't even need 2 full Unreal installs, it's enough to have several system directories (e.g. System225, System227). You just need to slightly adjust the "Paths" setting in all your Unreal.ini files in your different System directories.

Now why the hell didn't I ever think of doing that? I even had the idea of merging the cache for all my installs!You don't even need 2 full Unreal installs, it's enough to have several system directories (e.g. System225, System227). Zoom, that sorta went past me. Can you explain that abit further, please? A "Several System Directories for Dummies" would sure help out.

Re: Need help playing Old Unreal like the old days
Ok :-)
You install Unreal 224 normally.
Then copy the entire folder
[drive]:\Unreal\System
to
[drive]:\Unreal\System224
Then edit the file
[drive]:\Unreal\System224\Unreal.ini
under [Core.System] the paths entries are changed:
Paths=..\System224\*.u
Paths=..\Maps\*.unr
Paths=..\Textures\*.utx
Paths=..\Music\*.umx
Paths=..\Sounds\*.uax
If you have Napali, HiRes and/OR UT installed, you can even add something like this:
Paths=..\..\NaPali\HiResTextures\*.utx
Paths=..\..\UT\Music\*.umx
Paths=..\..\UT\Textures\*.utx
Paths=..\..\NaPali\Music\*.umx
NOTE: The HIRES-Textes should be moved to the top of list (or at least before your normal texture directory).
Okay... 224 is installed.
You patch to 225, your directory System224 remains untouched, and "System" now contains 225.
Copy
[drive]:\Unreal\System
to
[drive]:\Unreal\System225
Edit [drive]:\Unreal\System225\Unreal.ini like above, replacing the occurance of "224" with "225".
Patch to 226.
[drive]:\Unreal\System
to
[drive]:\Unreal\System226
I think you are getting the drift now...
You can have as many system directories as you like, just keep correcting the paths entry. It is also very useful to have different system directories for servers and clients (for obvious testing purposes).
As you could see in the above example, some resources from other games (UT) can be shared. DLL files and some u files cannot, but music, textures and sounds should all be fine to be shared. On the downside, with resource sharing, especially with UT/Unreal, the risk of getting a "version conflict" increases significantly, because a lot of mappers re-did some packages and forgot to rename them.
