Unreal again after all these years - and a problem

Post by Walrus »

"Old Unreal.com"? Nice work!

If there's anyone on here who used to hang around the old Nildram servers in the UK in the good old days.......Hi :)

Anyway, I've picked up the anthology gold version, updated it with the OMP patch from this site and I'm wondering why none of my prefs changes or player setup changes are ever saved!

I've now edited my unreal.ini so that my resolution is saved, but SP saves are not being recorded either :(

Anyone had this and know about a fix?

Can you do a quick verification that the Unreal.ini and User.ini are NOT set to "read only"?

I think it's a Vista problem or something unique to my machine, as I've just had an error from another "old" game (Baldurs Gate) that can't save to an .ini file when I try and configure it.

Yes, they aren't set to read-only :) Phew ;)

And kudos for keeping Unreal alive. It's still the best game I ever played, taking the time of my life and available equipment into account. Nothing has ever been able to recreate that first moment, all those years ago, when you stepped out of the Vortex Rikers into NyLeve's Falls.

Yep, can't beat co-op. Especially when your team mate is wearing headphones, is next to you in-game and you fire off the original u1 rifle :)

Anyway, I think that my problem is solved. Here's a link to the Vista Forums - it's all about the read-only flag on the FOLDER and having to do a work around to be able to change it. (No, it's not as easy as clicking the box.)

Like some people said in Epic's forums: the miracle of Vista... Won't run absolutely anything completely well that has been created at least 2 years before the release of Vista ;) Even Linux is better! (In fact, using it now :) )

Good luck, nice to see another guy playing Unreal. I never managed to coop, all servers have 0 people and some funky mods I don't like. :( Can you coop in UT by the way?

Well duh, do you think I didn't have it? ;) Without Oldskool, UT is worthless! (but with Oldskool U1 is worthless... Lol) Just wondering if it adds a Co-op tab in the server list? I know that Co-op button in the OldSkool menus, but it's for hosting matches only.

WOW, thats a bold statement.. And yes, I strongly disagree. I don't need think state reason.

Well, I have no idea why should people use U1 if they have UT and U1. If they don't have UT, then sure, U1 is good. With 227 U1 is somewhat more worthy but when the extension pack will be out UT will be a lot better!

I have both UT and U1 and I tend to like U1 better mainly because in UT I find that lighting appears more drab and washed-out (not sure why, is lighting processed differently in UT?) in the same map with the same render settings (e.g. OpenGl). I also don't like a lot of other small things like the pickup sounds, meshes (and their animations) and other sound effects. This is not to say that I find U1 better in allways (I like the flak shot better) but overall I still like U1. Just my opinion.  ;)

I just think that there aren't enough "Unreal" maps in UT. Oh look, another sci-fi industrial warehouse optimized for "flow" and "z-axis opportunities". BOOOORRRRING! At least they reduced the uber-ness of the ASMD and let you play as a Nali though. Oh, and UT Domination is probably the most fun you can have with the Unreal engine, especially with 3 teams :)

I played U1 and UT versions of Morbias last night, just for the hell of it against decent bots. U1 was more fun, UT was more polished. Maybe it's the gibbage and death noises in U1, not to mention the occasional dismemberments. Maybe it's nostalgia......

But weapons and bot/player models are in OldSkool :) Just use the StuffSwapper and you've got U1 :) And add some U1 bots!
About the tech maps, have to agree... Too techy, Nali style maps are better. But that depends on downloaded Usermaps.
And you can easily play U1 maps on UT. Have all U1 maps as well as UPak maps and they're my favourite :) Have optimized some for UT as well (translocator support).

To play mods that only work in U1...?

Besides, even with Oldskool or other mods that achieve the "Unreal in UT" effect, it just doesn't feel 100% the same.

Well yes, with online play, mods, and feeling. But I feel comfortable with UT S3TCs and other UT improvements :)
