Abbrevations and Noork's Elbow

Post by GreatEmerald »

I'm sure most people have seen odd abbrevations in Unreal that have never been explained. And probably most of you thought about what they could mean. The most popular abbrevations are: ASMD and GES. BeyondUnreal's Liandri Archives say that originally ASMD stands for And S*** My D*** (go to their page to see the full version :P ). Other suggestions that were made by fans are: "Anyone Seen My Dog", "Automatic Spectrum Matching Device", "Atomic Shock Mechanism Device". So, anyone have better and more related to Unreal ideas on what that could possibly mean? And as I already mentioned, GES from GES Bio Rifle. Liandri states that it means Green Exploding S***. That is also not a very nice name - any other suggestions? :)
I think that ASMD could possibly be Automatic Shock Manipulation Device. And GES could be Glow Enhanced Sludge or Goo Enhanced Slime.

And as for the second topic, what is with the Noork's Elbow map in Unreal and Beta? It's very not Epic style to make very small maps with nothing to do in it, other than kill two mercs and a few mantas (there is one small secret chamber, but that's it). Even in Beta, it's the same size (without the chamber), and it is extremely not like other maps in Beta as they usually have very many different maps combined (later they have been split...). So what's the story behind that?

I believe that i have an answer for Noork's Elbow.

Have you played the beta maps? If you have, there was alot of traveling involded in it...Epic didn't want it to be totally predictable. So i think they decided to keep that part of the beta maps. Also Trench isn't that different from Noork either...just 2 titans on the way and a skaarj. They wanted to make it seem like you weren't on a single path, and they wanted to make it seem more realistic.

Anyway...thats my theory...and i like the fact that its like the way it is. I actally prefer the beta maps over the maps now...i liked the traveling and exploring that there was in the original. Just look at that Canyon map from the beta maps. (it was called fhub3 or 4 or something...the one that was huge with the crashed space ship in the water...and then the temple against the mountain that was actually put into the Upak maps...they called that map in Upak "Spireland") That map was HUGE!!! There was a ton of exploring and running around to do...and i liked it that way...made it seem alot more realistic

P.S. About that map...i love how you swim up into the crashes space ship...there wasn't even anything in there...they did it to seem more realistic....it was awsome :)

I heard what ASMD supposedly really stands for, I forget the first two letters but the last two were Mining Device. Dunno about GES, though. I figured it was something in Merc Language since it's made with Mercenary technology.

Noork's Elbow is a transition from the Merc ship the the Temple of Vandora. Just another reason to show off their skills in combining Hi-Technology, the great outdoors, and ancient architecture into one map/level. Realistic, if you think about it.

Yes, but they could have made a very long map with loads of canyons, different places, several villages, multiple foes. Or at least merge it with the Temple of Vandora. I mean, look at ISV-KRAN of Beta, it is 2 maps combined to one! There are more, like DarkArena + Harobed Village etc. So what's the use of making a small map if they could make a bigger one as they did earlier? And also why did they split some maps?

Primeval, ASMD - Absolutely Secret Mining Device? :D But the Stinger is a mining device! And GES Bio Rifle is not a mercenary creation, as there are not seen mining Tarydium (and GES is a product of Tarydium refining process) as well as the fact that Skaarj use them (Outpost in SkyCity, the room with the shield unlocking panel).

I think having a big map takes up more room, but I'm not sure. The ASMD is also a mining device, hence why you find it in Rrajigar. :P I always heard the GES was of Merc Technology. And since the Skaarj and Mercs are rivals, the Skaarj probably stole the Mercs GES blueprint. I also read somewhere that Mercs do mine Tarydium, but not like the Skaarj. Dunno, found this info several years ago.

They probably split the maps for being to long for coop play :P

Go here: http://www.hypercoop.tk/
And go to downloads section, use Find to find Unreal Beta maps and just run Vortex3 with the mutator (see the readme).

ASMD probably stands for "And Suck My D*ck". I read somewhere that "And Suck My D*ck" is a reference to a movie where a guy blows a petrol tank up in midair with a gun while he said that. Sounds a hell of a lot like the Shock Combo, eh?

ASMD, should stand for Atomic Spark Mechanised Device, and GES should stand for
Goo Ejection System. Those are my ideas. I don't know bout noorks elbow though.
Unreal is definitely not for a weak personality...

* GES Bio-Rifle - "GES" refers to the weapon's ammo (Tarydium Waste) and means "Green Exploding Shit"
* ASMD Shock Rifle - "ASMD" means "And Suck My Dick"

Splitting larger maps into smaller ones may have had technical reasons. I haven't inspected the mentioned maps, but generally when designing composites you always try to keep the single parts as small as possible. So for coop maps, for example, if you get to a place that "locks" once you went through and never can go back, that would be an ideal place for a break/map switch, even if transition suffers a bit then... just a thought.
