It can not be opened in any modern UnrealED (I've tried with no success). There was simply too many changes in the engine.

Nope (how did you get the idea it can be opened, the only same file format there is unr, nothing else and models and textures were in dll and other files etc, plus background sky was a separate pcx and there were separate s3ms and its as well and it worked that way you had to load these in temporary folder by preset bat files it was totally different system)! And it isnt like Doom 2, it is hard to tell by the shots but there was a great lighting and reflections used and the engine is true 3d, there are floors above others, you can free look etc, well while you fire with fake projectiles at some maps you see a great lighting coming from them.
Don't forget it was competitor to Quake at time!
And there awere pawns and models already too, only they are unused in alpha, but they are inside these files as I looked, only no way how to make them viewable yet was found.

Wow Leo, Unreal was ALSO considered a "Quake clone" by few and a "Quake Killer" by another few...
Ever heard of how Unreal was originally being developed?
Epic planned for weapons in the middle hand only, complete with a status bar like HUD, but they obviously changed that up to this point.

I know how it was developed. ;)
They changed the looks of game many times, I am sure it would make minimally for three standalone episodes if the stuff was released what they made, minimally.
I played a large beta or release candidate or whatever it was once at 98, but I played only few levels of it and it is long ago, but one of the levels was a castle in sky island or some cathedral or whatever that was and it featured some before unseen monsters I remember, but I also remember being there SkaarjBerserkers too (maybe the only usual monsters seen there were skaarj).
