What files do I need?

I've owned a copy of "Totally Unreal" for years, but I just got around to installing the Unreal Gold disc yesterday. The game seems to run fine on my old PC under Windows XP, but what updates or other files do I need to install to update it especially to play it online? There are so many listed in your downloads section, I am not sure which ones to get.

Totally Unreal comes with the normal version of Unreal Gold, not with the Anthology version. You'll need the Unreal Gold version of OldUnreal Multimedia Patch.

What is the difference between http://www.oldunreal.com/patch/OMP-UGOLD.zip and http://www.oldunreal.com/patch/OMP-UGOLD-V0.2.zip
Also, just out of curiosity what is the difference between the Anthology version of Unreal Gold and the one I have from Totally Unreal?

OMP-UGOLD-V0.2.zip is an updated version. The difference between Anthology and your version is merely a couple of system files were changed. Some logo's were removed for anthology. Game is the same otherwise.

If its Unreal Gold you actually need nothing in the way of a patch to play on line. I use D3D and it runs quite nicely for me and lots of other players.
We have some settings you can make in the network and video display to make it run better but not really absolutely necessary. In the options under network selection for the game select the ISDN line option not cable or dsl. This will set the max client rate to 5000 which is desired for most online servers.
To get to the advanced options in UnrealGold, I suggest in the FlyBye game opening you type preferences. To talk or chat on the game, press T to type and enter to send. Once you get on a server you can get some help with setting up your game. I do have some newplayer assist articles on the dog clan web site if you care to read OldSparky Barks. Were glad your going to play on Line and welcome.

I installed the Oldunreal update above (OMP-UGOLD-V0.2.zip), and I selected OpenGL because from what I gathered from the description of the update, OpenGL is required to see the visual improvements. Before I installed the update, I was running the game in Direct3D mode, and the one big difference I notice between the two is that in OpenGL mode I don't see the reflective/mirror surfaces on objects like the drawbridge on the castle in the opening. Is there some way to enable reflective/mirror surfaces in OpenGL?

I guess if you want to run the high resolution textures, it will push your Unreal to a level that is far superior than UT2004 or UT3. You can read back on that on this link:
[glow=yellow,2,300]Unreal Retexturing Project[/glow]
And you might wanna try that too OldSparky ;)
And in the case you dont like to play with OpenGL, than within a couple a days if all goes well, you can also play the High Resolution textures with D3D8 using the 227 patch

And that should mean theres no appologise left anymore to refuse to play with the High Resolution textures 8-)
And in case you are interested, since you have Unreal Gold follow this Installation Guide for Unreal Gold:
