Skaarj.utx

First release of the Skaarj package :)

And this is the surprize package for the monster release.

I always was unable to create the kind of textures that are in the Skaarj package, the same goes for the Queen package, they are very complicated. But the textures in those packages are one of the coolest in my opinion. A few weeks ago i had a good look again at the Skaarj package, and i found out that i have progressed that much in making textures that i could make some of them.

So i started of with the ceilings and the Masked textures, and to my own unbelieve i was after all able to make them, and i like the result. Not just that, i had great fun making them, which is rare lol.

In this package the ceilings have been done completelly, theres a whole bunch of Masked and base textures done, i did all the floor textures and i did two other Hugh Deco textures. Those last 2 are probably the biggest textures in Unreal, one is added in the size 4096 x 4096 and the other is added in the size 2048 x 4096 which complies with the original size.

Here is a picture from one of the ceilings(betamodel, scratches have been added later on): Atub_L

The tubes on the background are handdrawn in photoshop, which makes this package the first one that has actual shapes drawn by hand by me :D So i am getting there lol.

The other important thing is, i have to make 2 specific base textures, and if i make those than i know i can do 100% of the package, making this package one of the packages that likelly will be complete in time  8-)

Anyway heres the link:

If you want to see the bigger textures, than open Dcrater, summon a rifle, type ghost, and fly to the mothership and while hovering check out the textures ;D They are both beta textures because i miss the the 2 base textures, but damn they look cool, speciffically since they are added in a hugh scale(which is probably also the reson they are added that big to begin with to Unreal).

Anyway, enjoy :)

Skaarj.utx Update 08-12-2007

Post by DieHard SCWS »

BUMP :)

Again in this update i did create most of screens/panels or holograms, exceptions are the screens merged into textures having a background.

I did add one beta texture to the package, and i upladed the texture in the size its created:

And again, its only beta because the texture does lacks a decayed look which is a must for Unreal. Apart from that its matches the origianal pretty close :)

It has been added, and can be seen in Dcrater. And again it was a horrible job to create all the signs, but i think they look cool :) Its not a big update but its a start, the same as for the Starship package, i will see if i can do more on this package in the upcomming months.

Here it is:

Firstly, hot darn! I've always enjoyed the original release packages. I love that Unreal and UT _still_ have so much of a following that there are people still working on it.

I hate the fact that I've registered to make my first post a complaint, but them's the cookies that crumble.

All of the other updated packages download fine for me, but this one does not. Rather, it downloads, but when I go to open the ZIP in either Winzip or 7Zip, it doesn't. Telling it to "Extract Here" gives me "Not Supported".

I tried re-downloading it 3 times from the path "Downloads/Textures/Unreal/Unreal/S3TC/Skaarj.zip" from celticwarriors.net to no avail.

The File Hashes on all 3 is identical:
MD5: 96E2F5646023164B3F88CFDA0E7A66A5
SHA1: 82E79A4966286A6F89163E525E1FE46C2AD6BFB6
CRC-32: 3C10363C

Still using the originally released texture package for now for this one, but looking foreward to using the new one.

Also, how do you go about making these? I barely managed to figure out how to update the original Unreal and UT textures.

I did download the package myself, and could unzip it with ease. But just to make sure i did pack the file again and did upload it again. Other than that i have no clue, so you may wanna try it again.

Also, how do you go about making these? I barely managed to figure out how to update the original Unreal and UT textures.

Thats always difficult to answer, but i either re-use textures that came with the UT 2cd or i make them from scratch. That goes sometimes with the help from a camera like grass, wood, concrete, rust. Of course those photos needs tons of editing before they are usefull, it needs to be made tilable, unwanted stuff removed, recoloring and the most problematic is, everything needs to be dark as hell.

On top of that i need to add shapes, shading, highlights, rust, smudge etc. All depending what the texture looks like.

In other cases i start making the backgrounds and bases from complete scratch in Photoshop, which is what i am doing right now on the Starship package. For this i do use the few UT S3TC textures as example. The 3 UT S3TC texures present in the package will be discarded to make sure they match correctly with the textures i am making now.  And its alot of work, they did use allot of different bases in that package for each individual texture.

On averidge i start out working with 2048 x 2048 pixel base, and if needed 4096 x 4096 pixels. Latelly i had to make alot of bases in 4096 pixels. It does take a big drain on my hardrives......... But the dificult part still is, at least for me, to have it have a decayed look, i am still having major problems to achieve that.

I guess that sums it up in a nutshell :)
