Grafic Problem With Unreal and S3TC

Post by lins »

Hi

I've installed OldSkool Amp'D SinglePlayer under UnrealTournament.
It allow play Unreal1 Under UT.
I've some problem when S3TC textures compression is enabled.
This is the problem (click to enlarge the images)

If i disable S3TC the problem disappears (see img below)

I've enabled S3TC by copying textures from 2nd CD on Textures folder.

The first one is due to a well known problem with the S3TC SkyBox package, simply replace the S3TC version with the normal version of the package and the problem shoud dissappear.

As for the second one (the Vortex Rikers one) there isn't an S3TC texture for that floor with blood, hence the unusual appearence.

the skybox masking problem is an issue with the s3tc textures in ut, afaik in unreal1 this problem is solved and not present.

as for the squares around the blood pools, this is because the blood pool textures arent replaced by the regular s3tc textures, diehard is working on that package, although i dont know if it will work too in ut.

Complete agreement with posts above, and indeed the bloodstains are not S3TC but will be so in the new PlayerShp package (that specific texture btw is one that TurboMan made :) )

As it is we are waiting for Smirftsch to find a way to make the package network compatible.

There is a testpackage, but i cant give the link now because the Celtic Warriors website will be offline for maximum of 48 hours due to a stupid error from my new provider (and not TNN that is hosting the site, they as always do a great job :) )

But in effect, your problem is the reason for this project, to create the missing textures. If you play with S3TC textures than if an S3TC texture is available you will see it. However if the S3TC version is not there it will automatically use the normal Unreal texture as you are used too.

But you still can enjoy the ones that are there, it varies per map how much S3TC is covered, DmDeck16 and DmSinfonia have high S3TC count while DmCurse completelly lacks S3TC textures (well, maybe one or two, i dunno)

As far as UT compatabillity for the new textures, i think it will be possible too, the only major problem would be, if there is a need for seperate downloads like one for Unreal and one for UT than i have webspace and bandwith problem, for that reason i am still looking for some UTer that is willing to host the UT files.

Diehard, if you send me the package, I can conform it for you....

You mean you know how to succesfully edit the packages so they won't cause missmatches entering servers online ?

Because poor Smirftsch is already for almost 4 weeks working to find a way i can use to make them networkcompatible, last week he told me he succeeded, but it resulted in hangups and the detail textures did'n't work anymore.

The testpackage is pretty big already, and the website is up again, so it can be downloaded from this link:

http://www.celticwarriors.net/Downloads/S3TCPackages/S3TCTestPackages/PlayrShpPreTest.zip

--------------------------------------

WARNING !
I do want to give a warning to everyone who wants to try it: DO NOT use this package online, next to the fact it will cause missmatches, you are also at riks of getting BANNED from servers, since UProtect asumes its a bot or at least a hack !!!!

--------------------------------------

Getting banned is easy, getting unbanned is another story....

Therefore use it only at home, not online, best maps to view would be DmSinfonia and Vortex2 (the first map you see when playing SinglePlayer)

Another note, its a testpackage, and does still contain a few textures that have a wrong setting, aside the fact theres still a bunch of textures not S3TC yet.

If it is indeed possible to make the package compatible, i will redo the package somewhat to take out the basic errors, after that i will release it as is.

I will continue with the rest of the textures in that package after i have redone the S3TC part of the website. Which is going terrible slow..... :-/

viewing the package, structure is too screwed up to do anything about it. So I'll make a tool :
- it will take every texture from the package, and try o see in a directory structure corresponding to package structure if a corresponding texture exist
- if it does it will be replaced by the new one.

Don't know how much time it will take me, but this way no more problem with packages.

That would be cool, i will btw sent you a mail about it, and also a mail to Smirftsch to brieve him your also working on it.

But yeah to make the project usefull, we need to have some way to make it compatible, as i said to Smiftsch, ill patiently await the result.

In the meantime i am still very worried about how U-Protect reacted on the accidental tests on the HLK servers.

If the netcompatabillity is solved, i do hope that U-Protect also will leave the S3TC packages alone. If not, i will see if Havok and me can find a serverworkable solution for that. And if needed to contact the maker of U-Protect to see if he can find a workaround for it.

For now lets hope that the networkcompatabillity will solve that problem to begin with....

Merger is done, I only tested it with a package already containing some S3TC textures (oldunreal convertion of UT ones) and added all your new textures, creating a new package.
Everything is in a zip of Smirftsch FTP server, and I believe you have access to it.

This is a huge download. So it will be up in about 2 hours.

If zip is corrupted don't worry it happens between smirftsch and I don't know why. hopefully it will work.

Usage is pretty strightforwrd, and I kept everything in place. So to test it, just run it.

Final texture package is in Tmp directory
