what i did then, was : choose a skin and just walk into it, and it put that skin on and i entered server !

Re: Lobby map
if you knew what the BCRM lobby was like back in 2001, i could explain it to you better....
a lobby map with skin models standing all around. to choose, or put the skin on, you walked into the skin basically. then thru the main teleporter to goto the server.

Re: Lobby map
So basically, its like

And you walk through a Skin / Model and you change into that Skin / Model, then you walk into the Main Tele which connects you to the server?

Re: Lobby map
He's talking about the BCRM lobby. It worked like this...
1.) You connect to the server.
2.) You're in a large room with a lot of male/female "bots" (they were really just decorations that looked like people) with different skins.
3.) When you touch one of the decorative players, you connect to the *real* server (where the DM is taking place) WITH the skin of the "bot" you touched.
Think of it like a bunch of mannequins, and when you touch one, you enter the DM game with the skin of the one you touched.
EDIT: It's not that difficult to make this, really. You'd need two separate servers. In the first server (the one that is visible on the master server list) is the mannequin lobby. When you touch a mannequin, it makes the player open "RealServerIP:RealServerPort?Skin=SkinOfTheMannequin"... causing them to connect with the right skin. Sounds like all that's needed is a custom teleporter class with a mesh drawtype and male/female model.

Re: Lobby map
And why would you want that? It makes more sense to choose your skin in the menu and then choose the server from another menu...

Re: Lobby map
I get your point but it just seems fairly useless. I guess seeing them all at once is nice but it still doesn't really make anything easier or harder.
I think its just the server portal concept that's the most interesting.
But anyway its all opinionated and I'm getting way off topic so yea...carry on.

Re: Lobby map
Hi All,
Back in that day, I played the game as Brutal*BCRM* and Brutal_BCRM. The Lobby on our Infiltration Deathmatches server was something I created, along with several other fun mods of typical ID maps. I still have the Lobby map files if anyone would like them. I can dig them out of storage if you're interested -- just let me know.
As an aside, I didn't find this forum and post about the Lobby until this week (June 2026). I haven't really thought much about our old Unreal server since I moved on from grad school back when we were running the server (1999-2000 era). I didn't know people were still playing the game ten years later! I also didn't know that the Lobby concept had grown so much since I implemented it on our server. Seems like many games use something similar now. (I'm not saying I started a trend -- I just did something unique that actually got traction with users.) When I did a Google search last week for terms like "Unreal" "lobby" and "Brutal", I found this post.
I also found some other references to our old clan "BCRM". Someone wrote out what they thought the acronym stood for, and it was hilariously wrong. In fact, they were claiming that it was their clan! Anyway, the letters just represent the original members of the clan. Originally, we were just "BCR". I played as Brutal*BCR* for a while. It stood for 3 of us guys in the grad school engineering lab where we ran the server. We had one of the fastest servers around at that time because we were on the university's internet connection -- a T3 trunk line. We were Brutal (me), Craven, and Red. BCR. A few months into running the server, we added Mitz. We never met Mitz -- who said she was a young lady -- but "she" was a stalwart regular. We gave her admin access and she proved helpful in maintaining decorum on the server when we weren't playing. The photo she provided to us as her "real" photo is hidden in the Lobby for those willing to explore a bit. (I liked putting false walls in modded maps, like the old video games often had.) I never included real-life photos of the other members of BCRM in our maps.
Anyway, I won't bore you with more stories about the goings-on of our server or the lobby unless someone wants to ask. Let me know if you want/need the Lobby files.
Cheers,
Brutal

Re: Lobby map
Wow. Looking back on this post from 2010 is crazy. I can’t believe how I have changed in speaking to people and treating them with respect lol. Good grief!
Brutal! You were an absolute legend to me and my server Redrum Deathmatches is modeled directly after BCRM’s. It is great to see you again! I thought you would of never fired up the game and logged on again after the university discovered the server being online without their knowledge and pulled the plug. I have great memories of BCRM. I literally grew up on it. I never had more fun than I did there, even on my own server at 41. Please, tell me how everything has been with you?
Also, do you remember PIMP and KRIZEK?

Re: Lobby map
Hey Oz, I do remember you! I don't remember the others you mentioned, but that's my mid-life brain trying to think back almost 30 years! lol! I'm glad you enjoyed the server. We set it up originally just to be able to play against each other in our lab, but then realized that it'd be fun to allow others to join in. The school didn't shut us down -- the three of us just got more serious about getting our graduate work done and didn't have time to run/maintain the server anymore. I probably lost 6 months of time over the course of 2.5 or 3 years just playing on that silly thing. I wish it were up and running again now because I have teen boys who like to play some video games, though they'd probably think Unreal (the original version) was lame. Thanks for reaching out!

Re: Lobby map
Do you have the game installed? Have you been on my server Redrum Deathmatches lately? I have all of your old maps plus all the new age ones as well. They might actually get a kick out of the old school first person shooters. You never know!
