Any good maps with warp zones?
Anyone know any good maps that take advantage of warp zones? I was shocked to discover that DM-Fractal actually had actual portals because I'd never noticed that before, and now I'd really like to see what they can look like in a map where they're not hidden behind a trap.

Not good ones, but I have 2 : CTF-Axlik and DM-Cooling.
You must construct additional pylons.

This is just what I was looking for, thanks! Even as simple as these maps are, they're insanely cool.Hellkeeper wrote: ↑Mon Jan 12, 2026 10:08 am Not good ones, but I have 2 : CTF-Axlik and DM-Cooling.
Were they hard to make? I just wonder why Epic never did more with the concept.

Re: Any good maps with warp zones?
They're very easy to set up, they barely require more preparation than normal zone portals to work. The main problem is all the limitations warpzones carry: you can't have a skybox visible through a warpzone because it won't show, you can't have fog near the warpzone because it cuts off, bots and monsters can't see through a warpzone and instant hit weapons can't shoot through the portal (alhough this is fixed in U227). This limits their potential use to fringe cases. Krull0r uses them in DM-BeyondTheSun as actual portals (simple teleporting gates with the other side visible) and I know Amisa liked to use them as realtime cameras.
With human players though, they can be fund because they allow you to defy the laws of physics.

Re: Any good maps with warp zones?
They absolutely did more with the concept, lmao. The original Unreal had many warpzone maps, some of them were cut or changed however. And during UT's developement. The problem was many Unreal versions like around 220 and even the 300 and 400 forks that ran UT later on, the warpzones were never as good online as on Unreal...so they cut warpzones from many maps, as it can switch your view multiple times and such.FTSH wrote: ↑Mon Jan 12, 2026 7:45 pmThis is just what I was looking for, thanks! I mean even here where you posted
viewtopic.php?p=102507#p102507
the older ctf niven has warpzone maze in it. and splash has warpzones as well, there are multiple versions of splash, the splashleo one is by me (yrex is credited for the skybox btw as it was from the upsx rework developement, we used splash there anyways).
another interesting splash version is the one by zynthetic here

editnote*
though he didnt replace the unreal weapons with ut ones explicitly l;ike we did, but the new ways the trap works make sure the weapons stay properly though. the sky map also used one warpzone
Then...you might want to check this
https://ut99.org/viewtopic.php?p=153385#p153385
this has links to ut classic packs, it has also radikus which was released with unreal
then there's this:
viewtopic.php?t=11294
Solaris, a simple map but entirely with warpzones looping it. But its one of the best examples you can have.
There were also escher style maps, I made warpzone maps for my old bloodgate project, unreal psx used maps with warpzones too, I combined dm iris versions and put warpzones in it to connect it properly though i had to watch out making sure the exit and entry use the same geometry otherwise the portal will have hom issues and other issues that can happen (make sure it always has the same size really, the entry and exit, and between map versions this can be problematic too like when the sizes change).
viewtopic.php?t=11354
Also....the singleplayer maps in unreal psx some of them used triggering of warpzones. You can trigger a warpzone into a NEW LOCATION. You can make dynamic warpzones and there was even a gametype that utilized it, a rework was released in the forgotten classic mappack (it wasnt finished but stil released).
There was a ton more that didn't get recovered too but once released.
AND this
https://unreal.fandom.com/wiki/Command_control
basically the triggering was introduced in 220 as new feature. unreal psx took advantage of this and so was supposed botpack...it was created for that reason for the cut gametype.

edit and the only OT line: (while i was looking there i noticed this pack too uploaded same month like why bother with this anyways if its just the demo maps that anyone can copy over but whatever cool, though i dont think the demo maps used warpzones: https://unrealarchive.org/unreal-tourna ... ba08b.html)

Re: Any good maps with warp zones?
I appreciate the information! I'd seen Radikus, I was just wondering why UT99 in particular only had the one map. I'll have to check out the old CTF-Niven and the other maps you linked, thanks!

Re: Any good maps with warp zones?
The fact instant-hit weapons cannot shoot through is probably the main reason they are not used much, but warpzones do have a number of limitations limiting their use to fun visual tricks. Bots do not see through a warpzone and won't shoot at you if you're on the other side. The warpzone in Fractal is placed in such a way you might not realize it is one if you're not careful (you just fall through a hole in the ground), becase had it been more central, these issues would have made the map play weird, unfortunately.
You must construct additional pylons.

Re: Any good maps with warp zones?
You should also check out Dm Escher, the original one by ezkeel I believe. It is a quite good map, in fact Smirftsch used to play it a lot like on his old Serpentine server, I remember playing a match against him circa 2005 on that map. Well, one good thing about serpentine was that the weapons used actual bullets as projectiles so it wasn't instant hit and it traveled through the warpzones. That's one good argument why not use infiltration versus serpentine at least not on warpzone maps mind you.
