License/terms for UT and servers
I sound a bit crazy, what with wanting an Azure server running custom mods with UT as an experiment (esp. being the laziest man here.)
When you download Unreal Tournament from Steam, terms and conditions apply to how you use it. I wondered how owners of servers can upload UT?
How do owners of UT make two copies (one client/one server)?

Re: License/terms for UT and servers
I read the Unreal (Not UT) license agreement. The Unreal EULA licences the software to be installed on one computer. So if you run a server from the computer you play the game on, you are covered by that license.
If you install the game on a second computer, for example a dedicated server, you technically need another license.
Most will probably not bother, but if you want to live by the rules of the EULA, you need to buy a copy of Unreal for every computer you install it on.

Re: License/terms for UT and servers
Thanks Hyper.
With Steam - can I pay for two copies? Or would I need to explicitly email them asking for two copies?
Usually you pay for one copy and "Play" or "Uninstall" but never "Buy again".
Being somewhat lazy, I can't run a server yet. I've read a fair few terms and conditions but every time I did I said to myself "I need a lawyer!"

I thought UT wasn't possible to be bought on Steam anymore, period.

Re: License/terms for UT and servers
Yeah, Epic stopped selling the Unreal series on Steam. You can only buy existing keys through resellers until their stock dried up. And they can ask any price. And then I mean, ANY price.
Cheapest ways to get licenses for Unreal games is the secondhand market.

Re: License/terms for UT and servers
Hey. Sorry it's been a while. Unreal was and still is a favourite of mine. Too bad you need some technical wizardry to change and add stuff to it.
What's the condition now with Unreal about being on two or more computers? (Sadly) I'm using Linux so I can't see what terms they offer to play it. If a copy was on a server, what happens now?
(or point me to a EULA. I can't find one)
Edit:
Is this the route? github
I see UT, so is this the 1999 version?

Re: License/terms for UT and servers
Blame AI for the view it took. It's fairly thoughtful and respects people's wishes.
Scanning the web, although it can't find the old EULA, dozens of sites (including oldunreal) offer walkthroughs for setting up a dedicated server. There's no money exchanged and Epic would encourage the game to be shared.
Well, time to read some of them! Or dig in the root folder for the updated game.

Re: License/terms for UT and servers
Unreal and Unreal Tournament are free now. So you can download as many copies as you need for different computers/servers.
EULA is in the manual. WHich may be included on the CD-ROM on some versions of the game:

6. Controlling Law and Severability. This license shall be governed by and construed in
accordance with the laws of the State of New York, USA. Exclusive venue for all litigation
shall be in New York, New York. If any provision of this license is unenforceable, the rest of
it shall remain in effect.
7. Complete Agreement. This license constitutes the entire agreement between the parties with
respect to the use of the Software and the related documentation.
8. Editor and End-user Variations.
(a) The Software includes a Beta version of the upcoming Unreal Level Editor. An “Editor”
is a feature which allows you to modify the Software or to construct new variations for
use with it. These modifications and variations can be both playable and non-playable.
An Editor includes its associated tools and utilities. An Editor is NOT shareware. You
may not freely distribute it to any BBS, CD, floppy or any other media. You may not
sell it or repackage it for sale. The final version of the Editor will be released as a sep-
arate product along with its own manual and additional features. Because the
enclosed beta version is not the final version of the Editor, it may contain bugs or
glitches which may affect the successful creation and operation of levels and other
functions. This beta version of the Editor has been included to show the potential of
the final version of the Editor. Technical support is not available from GT or Epic for
the beta version of the Editor.
(b) Using the Editor, you may create modifications or enhancements to the Software,
including the construction of new levels (collectively referred to as “Variations”),
subject to the following restrictions:
i. Your Variations must only work with the full, registered copy of the Software, not
independently or with any other software.
ii. Your Variations must not contain modifications to any executable file.
iii. Your Variations must not contain any libelous, defamatory, or other illegal
material, material that is scandalous or invades the rights of privacy or publicity
of any third party, or contains any trademarks, copyright-protected work, or
other recognizable property of third parties.
iv. Your variations shall not be supported by GT Interactive Software Corp.,
The WizardWorks Group, Inc., or any of such parties affiliates and subsidiaries.”
v. Your Variations must be distributed solely for free. Neither you nor any other
person or party may sell them to anyone, commercially exploit them in any
way, or charge anyone for using them without a license from Epic. You may,
however, exchange them at no charge among other end-users and distribute them
to others over the Internet for free.
vi. The prohibitions and restrictions in this section apply to anyone in possession of
the Software or any of your Variations.
