It's been quite a while since oldunreal had an overhaul, but we are moving to another server which require some updates and changes. The biggest change is the migration of our old reliable YaBB forum to phpBB. This system expects you to login with your username and old password known from YaBB.
If you experience any problems there is also the usual "password forgotten" function. Don't forget to clear your browser cache!

Newbiesplayground down?

Post by Leo T_C_K »

What the heck is happening now? Is everyone trying to attack my connections or what? I mean I just got into the public library wanted to do the usual, newbiesplayground.net suddenly gone...404 it gives now.

I don't see any announcement anywhere. What's up?

Yes, Newbiesplayground is temporarily down. Unfortunately a DDoS attack on the forum-script started on sunday. I could block 2 large IP-ranges directly in the firewall which solved the problem. But on wednesday the attack had been reinitiated, by thousands of IP-ranges, all individual IP-addresses. I had to take the docroot down to prevent the whole webserver from getting inaccessible. Let's see....

it was back up in the weekend. Yesterday off again. Did they stop during weekend? That would imply its someone launching stuff from workplaces.

But now it seems back online?

Yes, it's back online - and I hope it will stay so. I changed the forum guest-privilegies - only registered users can view the board now and I also switched the nameservers of newbiesplayground.com/.net to cloudflare. Server is stable now.
It was a worldwide botnet attacking the forum - I had more than 3 million failed ip-entries in the firewall....

I couldn't connect to the ftp servers before though, timeouts and other problems. Not sure if that was fixed or if the move made it different now.

I do not like cloudflare and it might pose a problem in the future though. Now why would your server be attacked by such a massive attack? It makes no sense right? Its a small community.

Who in the world would launch such a massive DDOS attack against a small website about a long forgotten computer game?

Well, my guess is some "friend" that I might have banned over the years might have "hired" the attack. Otherwise, I got no clue....

@Leo - sent you an e-mail regarding ftp.

Do you think he'd have enough money to do that? My bet is that you were included among many hosts for this attack though, it could have even be accidental and because of the "newbies" name in it or something, or related to some other things you might have hosted, of course all I have is speculation.

But thanks.
