Not sure if this is true or not but I wonder if Mental Hunter hosts his server on a laptop, I know that he uses wireless networking but I'm not sure what machine he uses...

I don't see why servers on laptops are different from servers on PCs.

Plug in the AC adapter, change the power options to Desktop and there you go.

I (Used To) run my server on my laptop, with Vista (The Horror)

It went fine up until the point I re-installed AVG, and now I'm getting errors when I try to run it. I have to configure AVG to get the server working again, but I can't really be bothered :P

Specs are as follows:

Hewlett Packard 9605
2.4GHz Intel Dual Core Processor
2 GB RAM
250GB HDD

I'm using a wireless connection, so my upload isn't very good. It still seems to run a server fine though.

My laptop has intergrated graphics and one without own memory, so it sucks when playing UT3.

Mine has 128 MB but I don't know does it share system memory. Although it should, I'm not 104,5% sure it does.

I don't know about you guys.. but I run a laptop with:

Windows Vista Home Premium - 32-bit
AMD Turion 64 dual-core 2.00 GHz processor
3.00 GB of RAM
and a nice nVidia GeForce video card with 256 mb of video memory

It's not a lot compared to the video cards out today, but I own all of the Unreal games and it handles ALL of them perfectly without lag (with the exception of UT3)

I've never had problems with my Unreal or UnrealGold on this laptop, so I was thinking that running a server should be fine (of course it wouldn't be dedicated) and no, I wouldn't use wireless.. laptops ARE capable of being plugged in with ethernet cables.

Nice specs for a laptop.

I think a server would run fine on it, but what is better, wireless of cable for running a server?

Cable for sure. Lot more reliable, no packet loss and no password stealing threat.

Skaarj Slayer, you were on my temporary server today (it was NyLeve when you were there). That was my laptop. :P

I also played a round of DarkMatch and two rounds of DeathMatch. (Hosted on my laptop, duh! :P)

Yea and it wasn't very laggy at all. Absolutely no problems running it.

I think it's a misconception that ANY computers running Vista or ANY laptops or even laptops that RUN Vista are incapable of either playing Unreal properly or hosting servers. Apparently it's just a common incident but not found in all computers under that category.

Just what I think. Feel free to argue.

Maybe it would be better to play on a virtual PC with XP on Vista.

I guess, but I won't do that unless I run into any severe problems using just Vista normally (which I haven't yet).

I suppose I'm a lucky one who can run Vista, Unreal and a server all at once :D
