It's been quite a while since oldunreal had an overhaul, but we are moving to another server which require some updates and changes. The biggest change is the migration of our old reliable YaBB forum to phpBB. This system expects you to login with your username and old password known from YaBB.
If you experience any problems there is also the usual "password forgotten" function. Don't forget to clear your browser cache!

Server reinstall on Windows 7 x64 (+ some SSD issues)

Post by Hyper »

Because I finally wanted to upgrade my server's OS from Strong and Stable to Windows 7, I ordered a new SSD (Mushkin Reactor 480GB) and a Windows 7 license. (Windows 7 is too big for my old 120 GB SSD + server data)

Yesterday I received both but after a day of struggling I must conclude that the SSD is completely broken. The drive continues to corrupt data and show bad blocks/sectors. A disk surface test clearly shows the problems:

It should be clear that I'll never be able to host a reliable server from this drive, so I removed it from the system, popped in my trusty old Kinston SSD and booted fine again on the old OS.

By the time the disk has been replaced, I will need to re-install everything again. Sorry for the extended interruptions. :'(

My replacement SSD arrived today. I'll be re-attempting my server Windows 7 installation soon, which means more downtime. I keep my current SSD in case I need to go back to my existing config.

The replacement SSD (Same model, MKNSSDCR480GB) seems to work fine now. Everything seems to be running fine at Windows 7 x64 so I hope this time it will turn out to be all right.

There may be some more downtime when I make some an image backup of the new installation but most of the downtime should be over now.

This also will be a goodbye to Windows NT 5.x for me as my server with XP x64/Server 2003 x64 was the last of my systems actively running an NT5.x class OS. Starting with Windows 2000 in 1999 these OS-es have served me very well and I'll look back to them with fond memories.

But now it is nice to have all my systems running Windows 7 x64, which is my personal favorite Windows of all time and seeing the direction that Microsoft has taken with Windows, I may just stick with Windows 7 with many years to come.

Online again

All tests went fine. I'm currently running a large image backup of the new system and after this the server will be up on Windows 7 x64.

And we're back online!
