This affects many great games. Nearly the whole Unreal and UT series games master servers will be shut down.
I hope an alternative is being planned. Cry

nope, not planned, already existing- at least for Unreal, not for other unreal engine based games though.

I will have my MS back up today as got my connection back, can't believe it! turns out I was able to keep my static IP in the move, my plusnet connection will not be used much as I have a 150mbps line with virgin on my second line but they refuse to give me a static IP unless I am a buisiness customer but the sync speed is good enough for MS usage. will keep you posted on it Smiley

I have been including a list of extra masters in my new install guides for a long time.
We just need to calm everybody down.
Unreal has been better equipped than UT with extra masters for longer.

A version of Nelsonas little server-browser mod, is an option for UT, but as Unreal still has updates, it is not an issue.
I guess we could look at making a community patch 437. It would also give us a good way of getting the new renderers into peoples installations Wink

At the Epic Games forums, Flak made a statement about working on a fix for UT3 at least.

I wonder what is going to happen with UT2004 and UT99 though. Undecided

Master2.oldunreal.com is back up and running, may need a few tweaks which I have contacted smirf about but up and running, while I do not always get time to play I will never forget the games of my younger years, am 19 now but spent hours on these games!

their UT99 masterserver works the last time i checked a few month's back, but for unreal, it does not :/

According to my ini files, the unreal client was never set up by default to use any master other than master0.gamespy.com

but the servers are set to use MasterServerAddress=www.epicgames.com, which is different than unreal.epicgames.com that UT uses.

My clients may have custom default.ini, so I might be wrong. I checked all of them to be on the safe side.

Thanks - is that Epic address for the actual server browser, or for something else?

Would be good to know what was in the .ini for the browser, by default - just to be sure.

I really missed that by reading it the first time Smiley

was in 224, 225 and 226, although it only was there and not in the counterparts:
ListFactories[0]=UBrowser.UBrowserGSpyFact,MasterServerAddress=master0.gamespy.com,MasterServerT
CPPort=28900,Region=0,GameName=unreal

although I think any masterserver from Epic's side would be highly appreciated, for Unreal as well as UT.

PS: if you really can reach someone there, ask them about the Unreal update (224,225,226) page  http://www.unreal.com/upgrade which was redirected from epic's page here for a few years and shut down without any notice Tongue

Bad news, but not entirely unexpected. The good news is that a few years ago the Unreal community saw this coming and we are prepared. We have a number of working alternative master servers and Unreal 227 is preconfigured to use them!

I noticed www.epicgames.com as a default one, unreal.epicgames.com has always worked for UT99, never got unreal to work with it myself, maybe contacting epic might be an idea as well, luckily we have the community masterservers, also why couldn't epic update the webpage that appears in pre-227 versions to tell clients to update im sure me and smirf had this discussion a long time ago

The default master has not worked for a while.
If you edit the ini so it only uses unreal.epicgames.com, it fails then reinstalls the defaults and scans again.
You have to disable the fallback mode so it keeps your edit.

Never knew the www address worked as a master. I'll have to try it.
Flak didn't tell me to try that, she just said they rebooted and we went and tested for the following week.

New masters can easily be added for users by giving them a new defaults file.
Once it fails it will self-update with the working ones.
A new defaults file would also be a good way to get current and more complete renderer defaults onto UT setups.

I assume this was in use some time, can't remember anymore exactly pre 224 times, but basically gamespy always was the most important server over all time.

I added a MasterServer query to the upper right of the forums, currently we have 5 popular and reliable servers for Unreal. I'm more worried about UT to be honest.

Ya okey, fair enough (figured the U1 community would be ok, given the alternative masters) - Flak and others are looking at the UT issue, so should get fixed - not sure when mind.

Will see what is said about the upgrade page.

I am sure ut99 was preconfigured with unreal.epicgames.com as well as gamespy in the version I had a while back epic had a kinda failsafe with UCC allowing the community the ability We have.

I have a Facebook group with my ms in it to allow people to get service updates for it.

Scripts like the one in the header could be made available.
Most people are using BB systems like YaBB or phpBB.
I'll mention it to Darkelarious if he does not read this.
I guess sig-code is also an option.

Don't forget, there are other non-standard ways for players to find servers.
Steam has it's own lists, and other tracker sites/apps like Gametracker, raptr, Overwolf etc. can also link gamers to games.

I found out earlier, and can confirm that Deus Ex is also on the endangered species list.
Thankfully the server list is small, and not too many players, so it should be fine.

I think the new kids at Epic are confused with the old U masters.
When I was trying to get it sorted a few months ago, I told Flak it was still not working after a week of testing by several people.
I took the silence after as a sign we may not get it back, and she didn't know how to break the news and break our hearts.

We just treated it as a sign the end was coming,  and as I reminded them of the GameSpy notification posted at the beginning of the year, it would not be so far away.
We were hoping to be more ready, but Darkelarious is the only programmer (not through choice) and he has a real job in the real world.

Ironically we ended-up chatting in the UT99.org room last night, as it has mysteriously become popular  Roll Eyes
