Beta Maps for 227
06/30/12 at 23:49:55

Is there a way to convert the beta maps to 227? I tried to load the maps in UnrealED and it crashed. I tried to play the beta with a glide wrapper (nglide). It goes to Hardware 3D mode, but I can't move or look around. I tried another glide wrapper called dgvoodoo and it crashes. I think the only way to play the beta with hardware acceleration, is with a real 3dfx card. I know theres conversions of the beta maps, like Zora's, but I want the 100% identical real thing. Zora's conversion aren't 100% true to the original (I think it would be impossible to exactly replicate a map like that anyway). So if I use an older UnrealED, could I maybe, up convert them all the way to 2.1 so it will load in 227? Is there any way possible to get the beta maps to 227?

Hi Smiley

As far as I know is Zora's conversion of the Beta Maps very near to the original ones, because no map content was altered. You should give it a try.
For glide, have you already tried zeckensack's Glide wrapper?
You can get it here:
http://www.zeckensack.de/glide/

I used it a while for 225f and it worked great.

I just tried zeckensacks glide wrapper and it doesn't work either. The only glide wrapper that didn't crash was nGlide, but I couldn't move or shoot using that wrapper. I think the only way to play the beta with hardware acceleration is with a legit 3dfx card. I read that Zora's beta map conversions aren't 100% identical, but if no scenery was changed, then I will give them a try. I searched all over google and finally found a link to Zora's beta maps. I will post it below so someone else won't have as much trouble as I did to find them. One thing I noticed is that Dot's beta map conversion is way easier to find (on hypers website). But anyway, what did Zora change about the beta maps that make them not 100% identical? What is the difference between Zora's and Dots beta map conversions?

Hi Smiley

Sorry to hear, that the wrapper doesn't work for you.
About Zora's conversion, yep I remember that I also had some problems to find them.
The main difference between the 2 conversions is the geometry. In Zora's conversion it's unaltered.
The other one has for example added skyboxes. Also in some maps are missing textures and some brushes are aligned incorrectly which causes some errors. Think that happens when you export a map and then reimport it again.
I don't know if Zora also used ex- and import, but couldn't find these alignment errors in her conversion.

The only informations I could find about Zora's conversion was in her guestbook, here is the link to it:
http://zzora.dynalias.org/unreal/gb/index.php?gbid=39645&offset=40

Masterkent noticed some differences shown in post 871.
I guess the modifications on the doors and lifts were made to make the maps compatible with Coop.
The problem with the urns in Morose is really weird. For some strange reason the Counter doesn't work like it should. I remember, that I got it to work correctly with a workaround.
Can't say much about the associated music files.

With the zeckensack glidewrapper I had always very reliable and good results, but I have to admit I never tried to make it work with anything newer than XP. I very much assume it doesn't work correctly with newer OS. Need to try.
But Zora is very careful in things she does so I think her conversion should be very accurate.

Thank you for the information Smirftsch and Leela. I tried zeckensacks glide wrapper again and I got it to work. I had to change the thread policy from crazy to classic. It kind of works. My mouse is responsive but I can't move. I can jump but thats it. I then tried 226 with zeckensacks and it worked. So I don't know if its something with the binds or the wrapper for the beta, but that aside, I've been playing Zoras beta maps with 227 and its alot of fun. Its a real treat playing it with a more accurate engine and updated opengl. I think Unreal looks better then games being made today. Even the beta lol.
