What skaarj model do you guys speak of?

Also, I think that skaarj model would be perfect if it was changed in 3 ways:

1. modify the brow on the texture to add those "scales" that the U1 skaarj have

2. Rearrange the polys and move the eyes a bit farther apart and make the brow protrude less

3. Add more "abs" to the model and make it a little less bulky to make them look more agile

If those three simple things were done I'm sure it would look pretty damn close to the U1 skaarj. Hell I could probably do 1 and 2 at least given the model, textures and a little time. I used to edit models all the time for the PC version of FF7.

Also, I'm really not a fan of the UT3 enforcer model

So am I. The first time I saw it, I thought it looks too much like a video cam.
BTW, did you check DeviantART for the drawing I was talking about? I still haven't figured out how to PM in there. If I could, I'll send one to the guy who made it, he could probably do sketches for you (and Qtit, if he really does join in eventually - Hopefully he has time in the summer).

Regarding the Skaarj,  I think it looks great and I'm happy with it as is!
I'd rather Malk works on other needed models like the Brute now.  He's helping me out of the kindness of his heart and I don't want to consume all his time, with finiky details, when he could be using that time to work on other things that interest him.
...Plus I still haven't nailed down getting the model in and working properly!  Cry

Blood,  did ya get much further with that tenticle creature?

Not yet, tbh I've been taking a break from stuff to play Fallout 1, since I just got that for free off of a deal at GoG.com and I'm loving it so far.

I did, however start attempting the UVs and while I can't really texture anything, I think I got a decent map, but it still needs tweaking (This is progress for me since I usually can't UV map at all  Grin) but other than that not much.

Yes, I mean this one. Very similar to the Automag from the 1996 and early 1997 Alpha builds, isn't it?

And yeah, I also think that the tarydium crystals look too much like tiberium crystals. Tarydium is also depicted in UT3 maps in even there it's blue. Please make them blue.

I really think you should make the tarydium blue. There was even tarydium in UT3, and even there it was blue.

Well, his remake is an inspired, modernized remake, so he can put as much artistic freedom into it as he wants. Wink

Speaking of coloring, wouldn't it be cool if the glowing parts of the DP changed color based on which powerup you had?

The unpowered could be blue, it could change to green/red/etc. as it upgrades.

Nice pic btw. I would love to see a video of the level in action

(The following my cause concern for some viewers  Wink  )
Here's a pic of my version of the Nali house near the Vortex crash site:

...

Yes it's not a hut like the original but after a few attempts I preferred this version.  Just remember this is not an authentic remake, for visuals at least!

Also the player is floating so the angle is a bit weird perspective wise!

I like it

IMO in something like this, it's better to do it your way if you are trying to recreate parts of the game and the gameplay

It's more interesting when you recognize an area but it looks new instead of the same layout with vegetation models and better terrain.

Yes indeed. Improvisation will do the trick here. Keep trying out stuff!

Yep, even with the "artistic freedom" it definitely looks really good. Good job!

Does UT3 have any palm trees? That would probably work for the level to add more variety while making it a bit more like the original

Unfortunately no palm trees in the stock UT3 assets.
Personally I like the current trees so I wouldn't change them if there were palm trees available.

Progrees update on Malk's SKaarj model is that I have animations working ingame now but the game crashes when the model is killed.  Still working on that issue.
Good thing with getting the SKaarj model working though is that I now know what needs to be done if any other custom models are created.

If there's anyone here with experience with custom characters, who is happy to help out with the crashing issue let me know and I'll provide the details of what I've tried and done.

Apart from that...here's a nu screenie:

Good to hear aside from the crashing. If you don't mind my asking, does the model use stock UT3 anims or custom, skaarj-like ones? And how do you go about making it have AI that would act like a skaarj?

The model uses a custom skeleton and animations.
I believe the crashing is caused by either the physics asset or the Animtree settings.

Being a noob with Animtrees I'll have to continue to work on that to get it behaving more Skaarj like.  I'll also need a custom weapon to act as the blades the skaarj is using.  As I've said,  I'm a noob with Animtrees so don't be surprised if I can't get the Skaarj working like the original...time will tell...
Might post on the UDK forums sometime and see if someone can help me out.

You could download UDK. it has SpeedTree modeler and complier in it. You could probably use it.
And in the UDK forums there is a page about AI where there's a reference class for a placeable NPC. Maybe we could modify it and use the result as the base for all NPCs, like the ScriptedPawn class in UnrealShare.u in Epic's UE1 games.

Been a while since my last update...
Had some distractions like RL and Guild Wars 2 but I'm still chipping away at the Ny Leve's remake, mainly doing things that aren't screenshot or mention worthy...

That said it's about time I did some more old and new.  Here's 3 pics taken for different areas of the map!
(Everything is still WIP and may change!)
