Hey all

Today I tried to reinstall Unreal and remembered this place from days of old... I ran into problems you see!

I have the game on steam (it's Unreal Gold) and after install it's 226.

When I install the patch from this site for "unreal gold" my game totally acts funky (it switches resolutions a lot of times (in a loop forever till I force shut it down).. or it just gives me a DX9 crash.

I then tried with Kentie's DX 10 renderer (uninstalled the game, redownloaded from steam, added dx 10 renderer) and it works fine in 226 using DX 10.

But then as soon as I install patch 227h it all starts going funkie again Sad

Does 227h not work with the steam release ? For my playthrough I want to pimp up unreal to the max of it's potential so I don't want to waste out on improved graphics and such Smiley

System:
i7, 16gb ddr3, 2x Ati 6800 series in crossfire, win7 x64

Oh, Im only interested in single player and coop multiplayer (on single player maps) if that is of any concern)

Are you trying to launch it from steam after you install 227? There's a possibility that steam may try to repatch a few files to work but I'm not sure. I don't think many people have actually confirmed using the steam install.

The renderer infinite loop may be a simple error however. It could be that it's detecting something wrong and tries to set a resolution not compatible, then tries to fallback to the failsafe which may not also be compatible. 

However, we may be able to prevent this.

Install 227h, then before doing anything, open both default.ini and unreal.ini

search for "[WinDrv.WindowsClient]" with no quotes.
You will see these values that you will want to modify.

Code:
WindowedViewportX=640
WindowedViewportY=480
FullscreenViewportX=800
FullscreenViewportY=600
 



I would recommend setting WindowedViewportX to 800, and Y to 600, then match the fullscreen to match your desktop resolution. This might prevent the infinite loop. If it still occurs, wait a minute or two to force close it, then put your logfile up on www.pastebin.com and post it here for us to read to try to help you further.

There are reports which confirm that it works with the steam version (like http://www.oldunreal.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1320508153 ), but I can't try it myself as I refuse to use Steam entirely.
I think Casey could be right that it can't be started anymore from within Steam then, if that is what you try, since I have no clue what they maybe added internally to bind it.
In any case we need to see a crashlog or at least what this DX9 crash of yours is. I more assume a DX9 problem than a steam problem when thinking more about it. Did you try OpenGL also?

227 works well with steam version of unreal. Just copy unreal directory from stem installation somewhere, when patch it with 227.
And try opengl, as Smirftsch mentioned above.

Fixed the problem Smiley Appearently it was my dual monitor setup... as soon as I unplugged monitor 2 and tried it booted fine!
