Well this is embarrassing....
10/22/11 at 02:58:31

I went to play a recent conversion by .:..:'s (which is awesome btw) offline and I noticed that some of my save games
don't work 100%
.

How something like this gets unnoticed for this long I have no idea... but this is seriously embarrassing.  Does anyone even care about Unreal singleplayer anymore?  Sure, I notice the forums at UnrealSP.org that some people care about it, but the numbers are dropping fast there as well.  I know DM is important to the 227 team just as much as SP/Coop (probably more even), but something such as games not always properly overwriting each other goes unnoticed?  Wow.

Obviously this is not something where I can provide a picture example, but I promise that it has happened for me and someone else just the same offline.

I can confirm this bug. I'd say it's embarrassing. :/

Tried to play base unreal single player and saving over an existing game will not update the save (make a new save file). Dunno how something this fundamental could get broken.

Edit: I'd also like to ask why Unreal difficulty was bumped up from 3 to 4. Now when someone says they're playing "on unreal difficulty" you have to quantify the version as well (227 or pre 227). This is pretty much as fundamental of a gameplay change as I can imagine.

Can't reproduce with or without admin level privileges on Unreal.exe.

Going to need what OS, what type of account, {admin, power user, normal user, guest or other}, and if win7/vista UAC level settings.

You probably will also want to check ownership on the Saves folder as well.

You could also attempt to run unreal with admin privileges and see if that changes the result at all.

First off, I was not able to confirm this. Maybe some logs or other details would have been nice.

And embarrassing? Indeed, it's embarrassing to read.
SP is having the same importance as everything else for the "development team", just that the testers and players would have missed or even ignored it then- which is your responsibility too. Its yours as well as anyone else. You know that it is quite impossible for the very few people working on this to check everything and that we absolutely depend on reports from the beta testers and the players of course who use the patch.
You want to sit back and have a team checking anything? Pay for it.
Otherwise you should be embarrassed yourself.

And for the difficulty levels- its no change in gameplay at all- it's just if you are able to beat the game. If to difficult, just make it easier. In any case an improvement for singleplay.

And be serious, "Unreal" difficulty was never "Unreal", it was way to easy for it- also what would you want to call a difficulty which is harder than "Unreal"? - that description just has to be the hardest level.

What you read is the truth and nothing more unless this bug somehow is faulty with the maps themselves and not save game system.  I have heard of problems where specific maps have problems with saving offline and I never really understood why.  According to a friend though, he had a save game malfunction on stock Unreal maps.  No, I'm not going to give my PC's information about OS and other stuff that has absolutely no relevance to the topic and no I'm not going to feel responsible for some possible bug that should have been obvious from the get-go.  Thing is, there is a good chance that it may not be the case of it being so obvious, but hearing that the issue can be found in stock Unreal maps makes me think otherwise.  If it can be reproduced on stock Unreal then its an obviously an issue with 227.  I may/may not get around to it if time permits.

I mean come on man, I've been doing save games in 226b and UT for years now and never had a problem like this.  Why would stuff like this even matter in context?  I'm 100% admin on all my stuff on my PC (the only user) and as you probably already know I use Windows XP.  Why this stuff is relevant to a save game for Unreal I'll never know........

Truth is that the bug is not reproducible here.
Also truth is that you are obviously unwilling to help to find it, just to insist that someone somewhere may have the same issue or maybe even not. Its of course not your fault to blame the people here because no one ever had this or was willing to post it if so, including yourself- better is to complain directly.
And if your so important time permits it, you are maybe so generous to see if there is really something with the patch or maybe just with a messed installation or wrong settings. But that's of course impossible.
Just that there are plenty of possibilities which need to be considered, as if someone really would care about your secret OS or machine.

Yeah.
You know this is the same thing I have to hear again and again here:

"You braincrappity smacked idiots, nothing is working, you messed it all up. It's not my fault that I am not willing to read the release notes and FAQ's are for idiots only. I'm to lazy to set up my game again, I did it already 10 years ago, so I copied over my ini. And my high end 300$ PC is able to run everything so I set everything to ultra settings. It's all your fault its not working now and it only runs at 1 FPS."

So if you are willing to help with something, give us something to work with, something more than "I've heard that someone somewhere may had the same problem with stock maps."

Assuming that everyone on your crappity smacking forum is set to "unreliable" isn't the best way of going about it either.  I took 5 minutes of my precious time to bring you this motion picture proving my theory of save games not working 100%.  Reproducible by anyone... anywhere.. regardless of operating system specs or PC Hardware or permission or anything of the like.

Enjoy!  I'm planning to win an oscar for this one:

Will this earn me that special title in the credits for 227i next release!?  I can only hope for the best!!!!!  Cheesy

I can not reproduce that in your video, so no oscar for you (using Windows 7 w/ 227h)!
Why don't you make yourself a little more useful and actually post some log file with the error?

I have reproduced this issue myself as well. I'm on 227h, Windows XP, full admin to PC, etc. I tried their video's method first and got the issue. Then I tried doing it but after I saved the game on Nyleve, I did obj garbage and changed the level, just in case the glitch might have been caused by some garbage being left behind (lazy crappity smacking garbage men). I still got the same issue, and I looked in my log for the time I saved and noted:

Code:
Log: Moving '..\Save\Save.tmp' to '..\Save\Save1.usa'
Warning: Error moving file '..\Save\Save.tmp' to '..\Save\Save1.usa'
Warning: Error saving '..\Save\Save1.usa'

I figure this means that it set the name of the save correctly, but it did not correctly..well..save it as it should have, leaving the old level and data behind in the save.

Oh my god ! A report with some information! Was it now so hard to report it like this ?

But yeah and its obviously not reproducible by anyone. Tried the same here with 2 different machines now and no problems at all.

Thanks Matrix for the information. It could have been so easy from the beginning on.

It looks like the game can't be overwritten in your case. But it still doesn't happen for me...question is now, why it does for you.

After doing another series of tests with Smirftsch, we came down to the conclusion that it was due to my use of a custom console. I switched my console to the default UBrowser one, and did the same test multiple times with no issues whatsoever. I'm unsure if you guys (Pcube and Jack) are using a custom console yourselves, but it could also possibly be due to any mods you have running as well.

Funny thing is, it is relevant to the topic. If your operating system denies you modify permissions to an already existing file that you have written in a folder you may not own, {Hint : Unreal writes saves as Save#.usa} it may fail. As shown in the video, there is an  attempt to make a new save, then after changing maps, you attempt to modify it, the instance of the UWindow updates, but the file modification fails.

Quote:
Log: Moving '..\Save\Save.tmp' to '..\Save\Save1.usa'
Warning: Error moving file '..\Save\Save.tmp' to '..\Save\Save1.usa'
Warning: Error saving '..\Save\Save1.usa'

On top of this, it's relevant because 227 is built on a newer compiler which may actually use new permissions which
did not exist in 1998. NTFS wasn't on windows 98.
{by default at least, you could install some wrapper driver I believe, but it had no OS level permission denial}

Reproducible by anyone, anywhere, regardless of status of worshiping unreal gold, making bad console subclasses, or generally  being an ass to the only people who can help you.

I may also remind you that I own that domain and the webspace and I reserve the right to delete the content and make you look like an even bigger fool. I could replace it with something that makes you look like even more of a fool.

You two seriously disappoint me. Instead of actually being tasteful when finding a bug all you do is stop legitimate efforts to help your problem. I had to write up this giant ass post to tell you that while instead I could've been tracking down exactly what causes this when you make a custom console or a custom console in a certain way. You are a true bane to developers who actually give a crappity smack.

And you two called OU and the rest of the Unreal community elitist? That's not hypocritical at all.  Roll Eyes

Also, if pcube actually cared about Unreal, he wouldn't have done crap like this: http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/1681/pcube.jpg

I found the root cause. This only happens with a custom console that I found laying around that is huge and subclasses a whole ton of stuff. Stock unreal/simple subclasses are not effected.

obj list class=level results in..

Code:
Log: Object                                                                           NumBytes   MaxBytes
Log: Level nyleve.MyLevel                                                               510816     513556
Log: Level Save0.MyLevel                                                                  9368      10492
Log: Level Entry.MyLevel                                                                  4546       4694
Log:
Log:                                                       Object   NumBytes   MaxBytes
Log:                                         Level nyleve.MyLevel     510816     513556
Log:                                          Level Save0.MyLevel       9368      10492
Log:                                          Level Entry.MyLevel       4546       4694

Save0 is the save of VortexRikers after it was loaded.
NyLeve is the level I'm currently in, and if I try to save a package named Save0... in which the file is already locked because it's still in memory, the overwrite will fail.

For me, a simple obj garbage fixed the problem. I could then save.

Code:
Log: 274172.2ms Unloading: Package nyleve
Log: Save=115.145717
Log: Moving '..\Save\Save.tmp' to '..\Save\Save0.usa'
Warning: Error moving file '..\Save\Save.tmp' to '..\Save\Save0.usa'
Warning: Error saving '..\Save\Save0.usa'
...{pruned obj list/refs commands}
>obj garbage
Log: Collecting garbage
Log: Purging garbage
Log: 396255.2ms Unloading: Package DoorsAnc
Log: 396262.2ms Unloading: Package vrikers
Log: 396267.2ms Unloading: Package Greatfire2
Log: 396272.2ms Unloading: Package Vortex
Log: 396280.2ms Unloading: Package Save0
Log: Garbage: objects: 22573->20978; refs: 467199
Init: Shut down moving brush tracker for Level nyleve.MyLevel
Log: Save=107.616335
Log: Moving '..\Save\Save.tmp' to '..\Save\Save0.usa'
Init: Initialized moving brush tracker for Level nyleve.MyLevel

Matrix found the same results as me. Something in the custom console is preventing obj garbage and stopping Save# from unloading upon level switch.

Verdict :
not a 227 bug

ps: still going to find a fix
