to make it as clearly as possible:
all Unreal maps to /Maps/
all RTNP maps to /Maps/UPak

Maps which are existing in Unreal/Maps don't need to be in Unreal/Maps/UPak (duplicates), those can and should be skipped Smiley

Return to NaPali maps are located in NaPali/Maps/Upak. Since Unreal has the Unreal/Maps folder, you can move the /UPak folder to your Unreal directory and you will have Unreal/Maps/UPak with the UPak maps, while Unreal Maps remain un Unreal/Maps (alogn with all your custom maps which are therefore not disturbed). Maps for both games are not mixed, since the UPak ones have their own subfolder : the patch merely tells the game that the new /UPak folder in the /Maps folder is another campaign called Return to NaPali. As for system files, NaPali has the same files as Unreal , so copying the NaPali ones over the Unreal will replace all obsolete Unreal files by NaPali ones, while letting your custom files untouched.

The wiki article is almost complete, but I can't import images for the moment.

Guys, I finally got it!

I never noticed that the original NaPali game CD installed its maps in UPak.  Since I had applied the Patch 227h when it first became available, I thought the UPak location was created by the Patch at that time.  I didn't pay much attention the the file structure until I started having problems.

I'm tracking pretty good now.  I'll be watching for the WIKI.  I don't want to mess up.

Thanks much.

The Wiki article is now complete. Simply drag and drop all your NaPali folders (NaPali/System, NaPali/Maps, etc...) in /Unreal/ and follow the simple instructions. Nothing should be problematic. Have fun and enjoy Smiley

Hi,

Well, I finally got around to going to my son's house.  I finally fixed the "Save" problem.

First, I reinstalled in Unreal and in NaPali the Parch 227h making sure I ran it as "Administrator."  I'd done this reinstall several times before without it fixing anything.  This last attempt also did nothing to fix the problem, but hope springs eternal.

Next, I uninstalled both Unreal and NaPali, located in C:\Program Files, and reinstalled everything from scratch.  The "Save" problem didn't get fixed!  Go figure.  For some reason, reinstalling everything from scratch somehow picked up that same bug.

I uninstalled everything again and reinstalled everything from scratch again, thinking the "bug" can't survive this process twice.  It did!  Still, the "Save" function wouldn't work.

Next, I again uninstalled Unreal and NaPali from C:\Program Files and reinstalled them in C:\ from scratch.  This last approach finally fixed the "Save" problem.  Why?

I'm thinking that maybe after uninstalling the two games from C:\Program Files left some residual data (including the "bug") that was picked up when reinstalling the two games in C:\Program Files.  I really have no idea why reinstalling in a different location fixed the "Save" issue, including after again installing Patch 227h.

Whew!

Probably it's another issue with a space in the path.

Emerald,

I'm not clear about what space in what path you're referring to, but keep in mind that the Save function worked properly before installing Patch 227h.  It worked with Patch 227g installed.  I've installed all Patches, beginning with Patch 226f.  Never had this problem before.

Also, I have Unreal and NaPali installed (in C:\Program Files) on three other computers with Patch 227h installed with everything working properly on those installations.  I checked the path to Save in Unreal.ini, and it is the same in all installs on the problem computer.  The Save function is working OK now that I reinstalled the two games in C:\.  The path, I dunno.

Fred

Edit:  I spent several hours on this rigmarole.  After this effort, I installed Dirhard's high-end graphics.  Nice work Dirhard.  However, I ran out of time before I could install numerous custom maps.  I'll install those during a future visit.

Hi Smiley

This reminds me of a weird problem I had some months ago. Suddenly I couldn't start any map out of the editor anymore. It turned out, that Unreal simply searched in the wrong directory for it.

I know, that Unreal is able to run from any location, even an USB-stick without problems, but I'm not sure if it's really completely independent from the registry.
Under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Unreal Technology\Installed Apps\Unreal
you can find the path to the current Unreal installation. I wonder if something changed here after applying the 2 patches.
Also I'm a little confused about the install path. I've never seen, that Unreal is installed in C:\Program Files by default. The only default path I know is C:\Unreal.

Fred, have you ever searched for the missing save games to be sure, they are really not there? I mean via the search function of windows and looked for Save0.usa if it's maybe located somewhere else. Perhaps Unreal and RTNP simply saved to another location for some reason and when trying to load the saves, they searched in the default folders for it.
Well, just an idea I had when I'd read about this problem.

Edit:
Something else came into my mind.
Isn't it true, that Unreal handles pathnames internal in DOS format if I remember correctly. Maybe on sons system there was some kind of problem with it.

Leela,

Instaling Unreal in Program Files is not the Unreal default location.  I installed it in that location, because that's the default Windows location for programs.  I've always installed Unreal, NaPali, other games and programs there.

Installing Unreal and other programs in that location has never been a problem ever.  I have Unreal and NaPali installed in Program Files on three other computers with Patch 227h and Save works properly.  The Save function worked properly in that location on the problem computer prior to installing 227h (with 227g and prior patches).  I don't think the problem I had with this Save issue had anything to do with Unreal installed in Program Files.

No, I didn't search in Windows for the saved games.  I have no idea where they were located, if indeed they were somewhere.  The Save folders in Unreal and in NaPali were always empty after a save, but the saves showed up in-game under Main Menu > Game > Load Game, but the games couldn't find them when I selected a save.  The Unreal and NaPali Logs contained no errors in this regard.

Anyway, it's too late now to go back to try to figure out what happened.  The problem with the Save function became resolved when I reinstalled both games, with Patch 227h, in a different location.  Note that I have Unreal and NaPali installed in Program Files on my personal computer and everything works properly.  I've had Unreal installed in Program Files since Win98.   Roll Eyes
