GPF when starting 227h

Hi folks!  Dug out my old Unreal cd to try out the latest 227h patch, and having a problem.

I'm using win7 x64, AMD x6 3.3ghz, ATI 6970 video, 16gig ram, drivers are all up to date.

I tried to install from my original 'antique' cdrom, and it wouldn't work, even in compat mode. I just copied the folders off the cd to the hard disk in a new Unreal folder. I then applied the 224 patch without any problems. Then, applied the 227h patch.

When I start the game, in any mode, software, d3d, opengl, or safe mode it get a general protection fault and crashes. The fault listed a torch texture, so I tried updating the textures with the extreme versions from unrealtextures. It made no difference, the same error happens.

I can't copy/paste the GPF message, so I guess I'll type it out...  :(

Thats what it shows. Any idea's whats wrong?

Thanks!  That fixed it!

Seems ok, but no animations are working, everything is frozen, like the unreal logo, and flames. I'll look thru the forum to see if any comments on that.

Hello my old friends Smiley

I've just re-installed THE game, and on my PC it works flawlessly (WinXP SP3).
Unfortunately, on my friend's PC (Win7 64bit) it is not so easy to get it working.
The problem is exactly the same as reported by Kas, so I've read the FAQs and tried the solution #21 (it's very similar although not identical, because the game doesn't start at all and the GPF windows popup immediately).
More infos about the issue:
1) The game is installed from "UnrealGoldHD 226b - DELACROIX"
2) It has been installed in a directory called c:\Games\UnrealGoldHD\..
3) It has been patched to 227f and it worked.
4) It has been then patched to 227h and this didn't work.
5) If patched again to 227f it works.
6) We tried the 227g and it didn't work, as 227h.
7) Staying on 227h we tried the "Data Execution Prevention" settled for "Turn on for essential Windows programs and services only".
8) Staying on 227h we tried the "Data Execution Prevention" settled for "All programs" with exeption for Unreal.exe.
9) We also tried to run Unreal.exe as Administrator and in "WinXP compatibility mode".

Here follow the error message:

only thing I can imagine is that either the base version (which is no official version) is having some difference somewhere or something during the patch procedure went wrong.
This critical error is nothing which is caused directly by the patch, it looks more like some crippled file of some kind. Please try with an official Unreal version as base install.

Exactly bro. Sounds like a corrupt file. Let's try to keep it "officially" Unreal. It seems to me that there's been an increase in pirated copies out there. Not good.

Just one man's humble opinion.

I'm sorry but I don't see this as a "pirated" question, but more as "enthusiastic".
I have bought Unreal 2 times, UT99 2 times, plus U2, UT2k3, UT2k4, UT3, RO1 and RO2.
The friend I'm trying to help has bought his copies of these games as well.
I don't feel guilty going to install a version created by an enthusiast that has done a great work putting together what is needed to have this fantastic game working again.
Should Epic do the job, I would buy it from them.
Thanks God, at 48 I don't have money problems anymore  Roll Eyes

Returning to the subject, thanks to Smirftsch for the suggestion.
I will try but I also remember that installing from the original CD on recent PC and OS often ends in a nightmare.....
What is really needed is a clear, simple to install procedure.
I can bet that many players from all the Unreal/UT releases should return happily to Unreal... I know many of them  Wink

I have the original vanilla Unreal CD from 1998, and the installer works like a charm on Windows Vista/7. Once it's installed, it's only a matter of patching. I've seen worse as "nightmares". The install procedure boils down to "put the cd in the tray, click ok until it's done, then patch". Tongue

Yes you are right, "nightmares" is not the right word, but I could say "frustrating" for sure.
I can't say why, but my experience was different.
On XP I went through mouse lagging problems, unstable in-game speed, and other issues... then tried the solutions found in the related topics, but never got it working flawlessly... until I tried the mentioned repacked release.
Call me dumb, but I know that my friends which I would like to call back to Unreal have even less patience and knowledge then me...  Cry

I see. Such problems may be caused by a number of things, the most extreme being faulty drivers, but I'd suggest a combination of mouse-scrolling, unsupported-dual-core cpu and such. Most of these can be changed easily or are corrected by patch 227, but of course, that requires looking a bit into it.
I wouldn't call you dumb for that. I'd call your friend dumb, however, for not coming back to a great game Tongue
