No, they did release the drivers (very buggy, but open-source, though without documentation IIRC). They're called ctxfi and are included in ALSA.

Argh, you're talking about that crappy and buggy thing they had at first released as a close-source only thing supporting 64-bit linux systems and then later on opened sources and contributed them to the alsa devs? Then yeah, there was such thing as a linux sound card driver from Creative but it is no more for a pretty long time though as snd-ctxfi is a community-maintained software. Sad but true, looks like Creative had never been interested in offering greater level of support to the linux community.

dainius@linux:~> cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.22.1.

Hmm, apparently my ALSA version is 1.0.22.1, and they have included a few updates for ctxfi in 1.0.23 and 1.0.24, but they don't seem to be very important.

So, here we go. On your system you've got three sound cards - X-Fi, integrated ATI chipset sound and videocard HDMI output. Most advanced card is X-Fi that's seems to be capable of hardware-mixing eight simultaneous sound streams from different sources. Unfortunately, there's no wasy way to tell if you've got PA installed as the default PCM output plugin, so it might be easier to temporarily create basic ~/.asoundrc file containing this:

Code:
pcm.!default mytst

ctl.mytst {
  type hw
  card 0
}

pcm.mytst {
  type hw
  card 0
}

Save it, make sure you had configured both ALAudio and FMOD drivers to use ALSA and then try to start Unreal using pasuspender like this:
Code:
# pasuspender ./UnrealLinux.bin

pasuspender should temporarily suspend PA in case it's running for the time you would play Unreal.

Also it might be required to create personal OpenAL-soft configuration file that would disable OpenAL's PA output plugin. It should be called ~/.alsoftrc and most basic form should look like this:
Code:
frequency = 48000
resampler = 1
rt-prio = 0
period_size = 1024
periods = 4
sources = 256
drivers = alsa

[alsa]
device = default
capture = default
mmap = true

Last, but not least, reconfigure the game to use 48000 sample rate instead of default 44100 (or even 22050, don't remember exactly) for both sfx and music. EMU chips tends to use internal sample rate that's is multiple of 48000 since the emu10k days, so it's better to use sample rate that would not require hardware resample from 44100 to 48000/96000/192000.

Well, their drivers on Windows are really not that much better. Creative had never been interested in offering greater level of support to anyone, and it's a historic fact... They are great at hardware, great with OpenAL and EFX, but when it comes to drivers, yeah...

My output rate is already at 48000 by default.

And no, nothing here made any difference whatsoever...

Pretty strange, though.

Had you tried falling back into using your chipset-integrated soundcard? It may be set to be default using ~/.asoundrc. And I'm still not concerned about PA status on your system. What's name of the soundcard that's being displayed when you run console alsamixer utility (it might be not installed by default, but seems to be available in every distro I had tried so far)? What's is the output of "ps axu | grep -i 'pulse' | grep -v 'grep'"? Had you tried to play with the value of FMODUseHardwareChannels (for ex. set it to True and try different values for FMODHardwareChannels in the range from 4 up to 128)? Also, try to set ProbeDevicesOnly=True in both FMOD and ALAudio sections of ini and then to run the game with "-log" command line parameter. It should display (and write to the log file) all the devices FMOD had found on your system, so you'd be able to specify the exact device to use by configuring the FMODDevices setting.

alsamixer says Creative X-Fi. From the card selection menu it's #0.
That command output is:
Code:
dainius@linux:~> ps axu | grep -i 'pulse' | grep -v 'grep'
dainius   2324  0.0  0.1 217984  5812 ?        Ssl  11:48   0:00 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog

No change when FMODUseHardwareChannels is set to true on any amount of channels set.

Using ProbeDevicesOnly Gives me this output with OpenAL:
Code:

And if I add this to .asoundrc:

It gives me this when launching the game:
Code:
EFX Extensions found
FMOD init failed with 32 Channels and OutputRate of 48000Hz - ignoring ini settings and trying failsafe values
FMOD couldn't init!

However, OpenAL part works fine, I can hear sounds through the other sound card.

GreatEmerald, looks like I had reproduced your problem on my home PC. Please, try the following: edit your UnrealLinux.ini file and set your audio driver to be FMOD like this:
Code:
...

[Engine.Engine]
...
AudioDevice=FMODAudioDrv.FMODAudioDevice
;AudioDevice=ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem
...

Head on into FMODAudioDrv section settings and make it look like this:
Code:
[FMODAudioDrv.FMODAudioDevice]
FMODOutputs=ALSA
;FMODDevices=default/devdsp (devdsp for OSS only), use ProbeDevices for a complete list.
FMODDevices=default
UseOriginalUnreal=True
SoundVolume=192
UseReverb=True
AmbientFactor=0.700000
UseHardwareChannels=False
HardwareChannels=32
Channels=32
MusicVolume=128
MusicPanSeparation=0.800000
UseDigitalMusic=True
UseCDMusic=False
bSoundAttenuate=True
;Speakers=Dolbydigital/Headphones/Mono/Quad/Stereo/Surround
Speakers=Stereo
ProbeDevicesOnly=False
DopplerSpeed=6500
OutputRates=6

Then start up the game and check if the sound would crackling. If your problem is the same as I reproduced here then there would be crackling with this config. Then, exit the game, edit the ini and set OutputRates (NOTICE: it should be OutputRates and not OutputRate!) to 1. Start up the game and check for the absence of crackling (and for huge degradation of the sound quality). Report your results here. Please, include the logs game would create if you launch it with "-log" command line parameter to make. It would assist debugging greatly.

P.S. Also, please try to launch the game with OutputRates set to 3, 4 and 5 and report results here in case you would find some free time for this.

Hadn't spotted your new post while been posting mine. OK, so you've got pulseaudio running which makes me believe it might be set as the default ALSA plugin. You should definitely use pasuspender to start up the game and also it is required to create appropriate  ~/.asoundrc and ~/.alsoftrc just to be sure PA isn't used.

~/.asoundrc I use for testing looks like this:
Code:
#pcm.default = pluglx2
pcm.!default = pluglx2

pcm.plugdmix {
    type plug
    slave.pcm {
        type dmix
        ipc_key 2734
        slave{
            pcm {
                type hw
                card 0
                device 0
                subdevice 0
            }
            rate 48000
        }
    }
}

pcm.pluglx2 {
    type plug
    slave {
        pcm {
            type hw
            card 0
            device 0
        }
        rate 48000
    }
}

pcm.hwlx2 {
    type hw
    card 0
    device 0
}

All right, testing with OutputRates 6:
Crackling is heard. The log is here - http://pastebin.com/SYthLixg

OutputRates 1:
Crackling is NOT heard! And yes, the quality is not too good here, and the music starts when I am flying through the torches instead of instantly. The log is here - http://pastebin.com/ugQN0Hiw

Thinking about it, why was it set to '48000Hz' by default, and there was also an option 'OutputRate=48000Hz' as well? After all, 'Hz' is not something Unreal can parse if it expects an integer.

Also, I can't test it with pasuspender and expect to see the log since it interprets any arguments as arguments for pasuspender and not Unreal. But it doesn't make any difference anyway.

Never mind, it most probably would be fixed before 227h release. It's the bug Smirf and I had found today and are cracking our heads on discussing it in the IRC at since 10am today.

Run is as "pasuspender -- ./UnrealLinux.bin -log".

As for crackling bug - I had found it's cause and currently in process of making patch for FMOD driver. As same problem affects OpenAL driver and the code base for FMOD initialization is mostly the same, 227h would fix music crackling for bot FMOD and OpenAL.

For now you may wish to use following .asounrc paired with OpenAL driver to play unreal. With such settings there are no music crackling on my system for FMOD-produced sounds.
Code:
pcm.!default = plugdmix

pcm.plugdmix {
    type plug
    slave.pcm {
        type dmix
        ipc_key 2734
        slave{
            pcm {
                type hw
                card 0
                device 0
                subdevice 0
            }
            rate 48000
        }
    }
}

In case it wouldn't help you may wish to add period_size 2048 and periods 32 settings into slave section of plugdmix right after the "rate 48000". You may would like to experiment a bit replacing 2048 with 1024 or 4096 and 32 with 8, 16, 64 or 128.

Yeap, that fixed it... for the most part. The thing is that music stops playing after a while. The times it takes for it to stop varies, sometimes it's after a quarter of a cycle, sometimes it takes two cycles or more, but it always happens.

EDIT: setting period size possibly fixed that, but not certain because it was difficult to reproduce earlier as well...

Installing the convenience libraries in ~/Unreal/System/ didn't seem to make any difference.

OpenAL is installed:

openal-soft-1.12.854-1.fc14.i686
openal-soft-1.12.854-1.fc14.x86_64

FMOD isn't available (even in rpmfusion it would seem).

-nosound does work but is clearly somewhat limiting. Smiley

Use FMOD from convenience libs. OpenAL still uses FMOD.

Even with FMODAudioDrv.so from the convenience lib in ~/Unreal/System/, I get the equivalent error for FMOD. I assume that is the correct place for those files.

Suggestions?

It's libfmod.so, not FMODAudioDrv.so. And the latter is not from convenience libs, it's an integral part of the game...

Embarrassed
Doh! User error. I unpacked the tar file down a level of directory so the libraries weren't in System.

Working fine now.

Thanks.
