UT for me, apart from nostalgia (the lan parties in high school), also the fact that the gameplay really excels, after nearly 10 years i'm still hooked on UT.

UT3 is just fine, i hate its visual style (read: theme), the story was shitty (WTF singleplayer), but the graphics are very pretty, and the gameplay is a reboot to the original UT, so i can't really complain.

UT2004 is really the only ut game i never got into, the weapons were uninspiring and i found the gameplay to be plain stupid with all that double jumping and combo moves.

I'm not going to call it UT99. But Unreal Tournament saved Unreal for me. I would not have released my maps if not for UT, and as a result I'm still with the community because of UT. As much as I loved Unreal, my best years under the Unreal banner was during the UT era. The maps, the mods, the community.

I was not as attached to UT2K3 and 2K4, but I thought they were fine games. I like UT3 more than those, but like its predecessor sequels I don't play it currently (basically, I played it a lot for a month or two like the others, and moved on to other games). I think the reason why I never stuck around for those was because I never finished a making any maps for them. I just could get into it.

I still play UT.

UT > UT3, period.

I also used to play UT before my system broke down but I need to transfer stuff from the old HDD to the new one anyway so I'll reinstall and put mods and everything back.

I think UT is the best game from UT series.
And I don't like ut2k4. IMO, UT3 is good game cos it's much better then ut2004. Same battle style as in UT. And ofcourse UE3 owns!

Yeah, let's just hope they make an Unreal 3, which will fail less than Unreal 2...

I realized the source of my preference of UT3 over UT99. I like newer things. If there's a newer version of something, I almost dislike using/playing the previous version, with the exception of Unreal. In UT3, I love all the weapons, where in previous games I loved some, tolerated others, and outright shunned the rest (I'M LOOKIN' AT YOU, BIORIFLE!!). Unreal has a special place in my heart because it was one of my first FPS games. UT99 also has a special place, but UT3 brought in most of the things I loved about UT99 with the special addition of further redesigned weapons, better graphics, and some new game types, not to mention for some reason the controls feel more solid than UT2k4's, yet more fluid than UT99's.

In short, I was offered two games by my friend for the Xbox 360 he gave me (it was broken, but I'm sending it in for repairs) and I chose Dead Space and UT3, meaning I technically now own two versions of UT3 (the PC version, which is better, [has obvious mod support and the Titan Pack, as well as customizable controls, graphics, and characters] but my computer is low-end so plays terribly, and the 360 version, which has respectably moderate graphics [not as good as a high-end PC's or the PS3's] but no mod support, no Titan Pack, limited control customization, and no customizable characters.)

Hmm, maybe it's right time to tell you all what I think Smiley.

In the past I was mainly the Q3A player, I loved Unreal, much more than Quake 1 and 2 but when Q3 came out it was what I needed. I simple loved the game, graphics was great and those in UT wasn't so for me.

Although I remember me playing U1 on P166 MMX computer, without 3dfx and so on. Crappy graphics, As tiny screen as possible, and you all know - not so nice looking sky and flames. Still, it was a dream for me when I was playing it. And as I said, UT99 was far from dream to me. It was fun, of course, but far behind Q3 for me.

At present, I love to play U1 very much; still I cannot find the right time to start playing it online. I love Q3A and it's open version Open Arena but I'm more open for UT. I remember waiting for UT2003 - was watching some presentations of the game and so on, ordinary waiting oriented things. But I lost the interest some time later. When UT2004 came out I thought "What a rip-off!". And still I think it. UT2004 was a rip-off. For me it was unbelievable - company like Epic did something like that to players? After Unreal 1? After good UT99 which I didn't liked so much but it was great game. They failed with U2 that's for sure, at least for me but what they did with UT2003 and UT2004 was the most unfair thing they did to the players.

What was UT2004? A slightly better engine as I heard, new gametype, very very very ugly weapons compared to UT2003 for me, and those vehicles. Wow, vehicles. Maybe they thought "We made vehicles, so let's make them pay Us again". I know there was a discount for people who bought UT2003 but still. Also, was that discount the fact worldwide or just in countries like USA, UK and so? Maybe you'll be surprised but - I bought UT2004. Was pretty impressed with the demo and trialers. And today I think, I wasted my money. Don't care about weapons, if you play for real you turn them hidden. I don't find onslaught fun so it's not a plus of the game for me. For all these years I didn't really play it. I tried, many times; a few months ago I tried some mods, just to like UT2004 - I payed a lot money for it in the past and I want to play the game. The problem is it's very boring.

What I like about UT2004, the linux installer inclueded on the DVD. I love the look of flak cannon, good they didn't change it since UT2003, or at least didn't change it much. I think epic pretty much ruined the community with Ut2003/UT2004. Many people stared to play UT2003, they switched from UT99, and after some time - STOP! New game is coming so prepare more cash to play it. Ok, people didn't know what to expect from UT2003 and after some time they had to get ready for a new game - UT2004.

Today I'm really about U1/UT99. They're simply the best. Also, there's Envy's DarkMatch mutator for UT99 which was missing in UT2004, I wasn't able to find any repleacement for UT2004. UT99 had all the great mods, mutators and so on. UT2004 didn't. UT3 is pretty - that's true but it's system requirements are to high for me. Thought I saw it on my friend's computer and I wasn't really impressed. Weapons are so detailed they can be custom levels for UT99/UT2004. Maybe I'm a little too old for newer games, I just don't find them interesting. I don't want to upgrade my hardware for software I don't feel attracted with. Maybe someday UT3 will strike my attention but I doubt it. I also read that it has big-size content, another minus for me. I understand - better graphics, engine - bigger size custom content but as I said before - it's simply not worth it for me.

About U3 - I don't wait for it. Probably I won't be able to play it and it's not the same people whose making it probably. That's how the life looks. Some mayor people stay but companies evolve as everything else. Maybe that's why U1/UT99 was different from U2 and from Ut2003/2004 as well. Also, UT3 is very different as well. I have and impression that if someone buys let's say U1 today he/she doesn't pay the people that created the game. That person pays people who made Ut3 and will probably make U3. I don't expect much good from U3, probably it will be like it was with red faction 2 which was much worse than red faction 1. Maybe a few first levels will be impressive, but the longer you play the worse the game will get.

It was just my personal opinion, hope you're not bored Smiley.

What the hell? I feel insulted by that comment, and I'm not even part of Epic!

They're the same company!! Of course the people who work at Epic are getting paid for their own game! Also, fun fact, Shane Caudle, the guy who created textures for Unreal 1 was the art director for UT3, and Steve Polge is the Lead Programmer, along with probably other people I overlooked. Cliffy was simply mentioned in the Special Thanks section, but it's the same company nonetheless.

Er... sorry, that wasn't meant to attack you directly, your comment just took me off guard, heh. No hard feelings? Grin Anyway, back on topic. I've been playing UT3 a lot more recently. I would love it a lot more if people would start adding custom gametypes and fun new mutators to their servers like we do to our Unreal 1 servers. But no, it's mostly just hordes of servers using the stock gametypes and simply rotating custom maps. Too bad it's a lot harder to code for UT3 than Unreal 1. Maybe I'll give it a couple of years.

I haven't had much time to test out UT3, but I did play the demo.

From what I gathered, it was a lot more true to UT99 in terms of gameplay, but, as with most newer games I try, I was dazzled by graphics so much that I lost interest. That's right, I got tired of seeing sparkles and shiny objects fly all over the place... I personally like games that are straightforward (such as SSB, possibly the epitome of pure gameplay). Yeah, I know I can turn down the visual effects, but then things start looking extremely ugly with blurry effects due to downsampling... I'm not sure how gaming came to be synonymous with eye-candy.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing UT3 solely on that basis (I only played the demo for goodness' sake), but I am saying that in general I would rather play a game to have fun than to get a graphically pleasing show. UT3 could very well be better than my impression of it was, but at the time of its release, I don't believe it was worth $50. Hell, I was playing the SNES w/ Super Mario All Stars just yesterday!

Hopefully, if and when Unreal 3 debuts, it has as captivatingly simple and elegant plot with a moderate to moderate-high emphasis on visual.

I agree here. I don't like games with too much visual effects. I think all of them graphic whores should make movies instead and leave gaming where it belongs to... <_< No offense to anyone, but dude, really...

I didn't play UT2k3 that much, but I don't think it's as bad as some people describe. Better than UT2k4 imo. I know someone will argue about this. lol

KillerSkaarj, that's okay Smiley. It's just the opinion i heard and I agree with but you made a good point. I mean, there are long-term workers and people who work in the company for a short amount of time. And that's ok to pay these good long term guys and if the short-term people get some of the money as well it's just normal.

And surprise, I'm currently playing a lot UT2004 on one server I like (iCTF + Lowgrav) so it happened - I found a piece of that game I like Cheesy. Still, I think it was the incredible rip off after UT2003 and I still think that Onslaught isn't so fun.

btw. someone said UT3 has too little customized servers - I don't play this game but personally I like classic game modes, classic maps and well known mutators if there must be something customized (but still I like christmas themed server for U1).

Just turn off the bloom only. When I upgrade my computer, that will be the only thing I leave disabled. If and when I create levels or game assets for an independent game, I will use nearly every feature of UE3 EXCEPT bloom and DOF (though I will leave in the feature [if you can call it that] where your vision is blurry underwater)

BTW, pcube, you should try Far Cry 2. It actually looks good without being all sparkly as you said. The only bloom comes from either the day-time sky or if your vision is adjusting to sudden brightness (like in Half-Life 2 or Halo 3), and not only that, it's fun. The only reason the bloom in Far Cry 2 should hurt your eyes is if it would hurt in real life in that same situation, which would be your eyes adjusting, if you look directly at the sun, or if it's high-noon. In UT3, and most other games in this gaming generation, it's just bloom for the sake of bloom. I know when I see bloom in real life, it means my glasses are dirty.

Crap, I rambled again, didn't I...?

lol that was funny.

Personally, I don't really like the shiny effects because they are sometimes overused and make everything look "too realistic". I mean, rocks in the wild don't glow like silver god d*mn it lol.
